So sad...UPDATED

My best friend is 16 weeks pregnant and went for an amnio today (she has epilepsy, so it is recommended that she has one). They found fluid on the babies brain. She said it could be spinabifida, or something else. DOes anyone know anything about this?

She is going tomorrow morning to a neonatologist. She is hysterical. I feel terrible

A friend of mine from HS mom went through the same thing.

Her mom was tested because she had her late and life.

She was born with no complications and is now in College and they straight out told her mom she would have spinabifida but her mom choice to continue the pregancy because she was Roman Catholic.

I'll be praying for your friend

Re: So sad

Thanks for all the thoughts ladies.

Unfortunately, my friend found out today there is a 100% chance that the baby has spina bifida and mental retardation. The pregnancy is being terminated tomorrow morning. I have been crying all day. She saw the baby sucking it's thumb today on the sonogram, and this decision is killing her, but all of the Dr's that she's seen between yesterday and today have told her there is no way that this child will have an even close to normal life, if it even makes it full term. I can only imagine what she's going through right now. She is blaming herself, saying it must be something that she has done. She is 16 weeks, so they actually wanted her to deliver the baby tomorrow

Dh's best friend's sister also had epilepsy and her first born has spina bifida (she later had 2 more children who are fine). It was caused by the epilepsy medication that she was taking while pregnant. I don't know much detail about the type of medication but she did sue and got a settlement. Their son is now 10 years old. He is severely handi-capped. It's such a shame, especially that it could have been prevented.

My heart goes out to your friend. This must be so difficult for her. I am so very sorry.

This is totally not your friend's fault, I hope she will come to realize that. My heart goes out for her, it must be such a hard time for her. You are a good friend to be so supportive for her right now.

My heart goes out to her. I hope that somehow she can find peace with this decision. If she is that devasted maybe she should investigate the disease further. There are children who are born with this disease. I feel awful for her.

All is said and done, and she is at home. The Dr. that performed the procedure said that the baby was in very bad shape and she did the best thing.
I guess I would just always wonder, but you never know what you'd do in that situation until you're faced with it.
