So sad...UPDATED

Original post by The Original 2nd-time-around

My best friend is 16 weeks pregnant and went for an amnio today (she has epilepsy, so it is recommended that she has one). They found fluid on the babies brain. She said it could be spinabifida, or something else. DOes anyone know anything about this?

She is going tomorrow morning to a neonatologist. She is hysterical. I feel terrible

your poor friend. There are no words. I, too, would wonder my entire life if I did the right thing. She will need a lot of emotional support I am sure.

Re: So sad...UPDATED

I am so sorry to hear this. My thoughts and prayers are with your friend. and you as well.
I had 2 episodes this year (siezure) and they dont know if it was eptileptic or a 'shock' episode from ibuprofin. Ive gone thru tests, and more tests and they dont know.
I have been to my neuroligist, ob/gyn, and reg. dr.
I want to get PG but they still want me to go for more 'consultations' of what would be best for me and baby. Its so hard. DH wants a baby too and I feel bad. I just wish they can find out what the heck 'got me'.

Well let me just tell you, my 2 best friends are twins and they both have epilepsy (they haven't had a seizure in well over 10 years) and they have 1 healthy child each, so it certainly is not impossible. I'm sure they'll find something that will work for you. Good luck!

Thank you for your post! I know its not impossible, however, its scary. Its scary cuz I never in my life had a siezure and also I've always taken advil, aleve, etc....they cannot come up with what happened to me. I am now (as of 9/11) 6 months siezure free. I have to take everything one day at a time.
Again, thank you for your post.

My mom had an amnio w/ my brother and they told her that he had spinabifida(sp) and that it would be wise to abort, this was back in '86, but my parents said no way b/c they knew they were having a boy. Thank god they decided not too b/c my brother is perfectly fine 18 year old now.

That is so sad!

to your friend. That is such a hard thing to go through.

I have a cousin who found out early in her pregnancy that her baby had MANY health problems. (I can't remember the specifics) She was strongly encouraged to terminate the pregnancy. She decided that she wanted to have the baby. When the baby was born, she was so small. She only lasted a few days. It was the worst thing that my cousin and her husband EVER went through.

her second pregnancy resulted in the same problems, but they decided to terminate that pregnancy because they just couldn't go through all of that pain again.

FINALLY, pregancies 3 and 4 were PERFECT and resulted in a healthy girl and then a healthy boy.

Tell your friend to hang in there!

Wow..Flashback!! My mom was PG w/my sister in 1984-85..had an amnio..Drs called (I will NEVER forget the day). They wanted my mom to abort as well cuz baby was supposed to have spina bifida as well. My parents said 'no way' they still wanted the baby. Well, we were blessed with my Healthy sister. There is nothing wrong with her @ all. Another risk also was my mom was 35 and back then having a baby after 30 was risky (i think even now) but mom didnt let anything stop her.
Im know times have changed and im sure tests are more accurate now then 19 years ago.
