It definitely was a dumb move on that girl's part. But, I can't say I don't know people who have gone home with strangers. A lot of people did that in college. Its never a good idea but I guess when girls see everyone else doing it they start to feel a false sense of security. He is actually a good looking guy so that doesn't help.
My sister had that happen at the Palisades Center Mall in Rockland County, not LI. The police told my family that a lot of stuff happens there that goes under the radar. In general, malls are not very safe places.
And the girl who is missing was at a club in NYC.

The first thing I do before I close the door is click lock so the door is locked as soon as my butt is in the seat.

Another thing I do if I know I am walking somewhere creepy, I always call DH or a friend and stay with them until I get to my car.

Yeah, I'm a pretty safe person too when it comes to stuff like that. I remember when i was in college taking some night classes, they sent out a 'warning' to each classroom for girls to be aware that there has been bad stuff going down in the parking lots late at night (robberies, rapes, etc). Scary, scary stuff. And instead of them stepping up on security (which the logical thing to do would be), they just offered some words of advice

They had actually said not to be on your cellphone. Girls feel safe if they are, because the person on the other line could hear you and get help if something DID go down. But predators actually tend to LOOK for girls on their phones, because that usually means that they're distracted and he'll already be done with whatever he wanted to get from her by the time the cops arrive.

Another tool they offered was to carry your key sticking straight out between fingers, used to stab somebody at close range.

They also say to carry an umbrella, because attackers rarely ever go after a girl with something she could use as a weapon from a distance (like a bat).

Also they tend to look for girls wearing ponytails (because it's something to grab) and girls wearing sweats or loser clothes (easy to remove as appose to jeans).

All of this information they had gathered from doing interviews with attackers & rapists that were in prison. And after hearing all of this, I just went out and got some pepper spray instead.


So - be safe, girls! Always be aware of what's going on around you, especially in dark parking lots. Check the backseat of your car before getting in and lock yourself inside before turning on the ignition. There's some CRAZY stuff going on out there.

Your sister is very lucky !! Thank goodness she did lock herself in time. She def. had an angel watching over her.
I feel terrible for the girl that is missing. Her mom was crying on T.V. and my heart truly broke for her. Its any mothers, sisters, friends nightmare.

That is sooo scarey! I don't know what I would have been like!!
