I swear I will stop being so obnoxious very shortly.
Possible change of plans, and honestly probably the best compromise for us. Debating now scrapping the Carribean idea, and doing a long weekend in the Florida Keys, then going to Greece anywhere between July and early September 2010.
Has anyone been, and is it nice? Any recommendations on where to stay, and what to do?
TIA!!!

I've never been to the keys but I think that sounds like a great plan.

Crashing
FH and I went to Key West a couple of years ago. It's beautiful!
We flew into Ft. Lauderdale and then drove from there to Key West, in a convertible! It's a long drive, but it's awesome. And you go over this 7 mile bridge that's absolutely amazing. The surrounding islands (Marathon, Key Largo, etc.) are all kind of sketchy and run down. But once you get through them into Key West, it's gorgeous. We stayed at a Double Tree Hotel (we always stay in Double Trees).
We had a great time. Snorkeling, glass bottom boat, jet skiing, etc. I'd go again in a heart beat.

You know....this is the first time I actually feel EXCITED about the HM. I'm actually sitting here at my desk all crying, because clearly I've reached my tipping point with all the stress I've been under lol. I'm doing some research, and it really seems like the best compromise. Warm weather and beaches, don't have to be limited to the resort, historical sites and things to do and see...I really hope this works out and FH will like the idea too, because I would love to do this as the hold over to Greece!!!

I'm happy that you're finally gettting excited about it. KW is beautiful and you can get a decent flight to Miami. I wouldn't fly into KW because you have to switch planes anyway (which I hate doing) and it's not too long a drive. Rent a convertible and go for it!
It's a great compromise. Good luck!

You will have a great time, and it's also a great way to save money. Fly into Miami and take the drive over the long bridge in a convertible!
Here is the park site for Dry Tortugas I mentioned- it is fun to hit up and see the historical stuff http://www.nps.gov/drto/index.htm
And be sure to take a pic of you guys at the sign of the Southernmost Point in the continental U.S. :)

FH and I went to Key West June '07, and we still talk about how that was one of our best vacations! We had the best time, and we really can't wait to go back.
We stayed at the Heron House in Key West. We had the best time with driving around on the mo-ped. The town is so much fun too. We went on a sunset cruise, and they had a live band. The Heron House was really nice and perfect for couples, no kids.
If you have any questions sent me FM.

Re: So....Florida Keys?
We were even thinking about there for a HM - we loved it so much. But, since we have been there already, we wanted our honeymoon to be somewhere we had never been.
My avatar pic is actually from Key West. You will have a wonderful time. We didn't do the drive, I wish we did - that would be fun! We had take a small plane from Miami to Key West - and I was a little nervous, it was very small and hot in there. If we were to go again, i would take the drive. Good Luck!

Re: So....Florida Keys?
I went a while ago for my grandparents 50th wedding anniversary. They renewed their vows on the beach. It was very nice. We went to Islamorada. I can't remember where we stayed, but I know we had a wonderful time there. We swam with dolphins, we rented a boat and went out to this great sand bar where they have floating bars. It was really cool.
I love Key West, but never stayed overnight there.

Ali, I think the Keys are an AWESOME hm/minimoon spot. FH and I really want to visit there in the next year (great sailing apparently -- he's a nerd ) but I have heard nothing but amazing things. In fact, my parents went there as newlyweds back in 1975 and STILL tell me stories. I think you would have an amazing trip. I wish I could offer you reco's but I know zilch about the place.

I just watched Platinum Weddings and they had it at the Cheeca Resort and Spa in the keys.... not exactly sure where it was but it looked AMAZING!!! Might be pricey considering it was on Platinum Weddings but probably worth checking out!
