White Teeth by Zadie Smith

anything by Zadie Smith - she explores race relations in London. . . amazing writing style - great insight into how women think of themselves, how people deal with different cultures.

and even if you ignore all that deep stuff - its just a great story!

Also good but DEFINITELY hardcore:

PUSH by Sapphire about a girl in teh inner city - TOUGH READ but short book.

Still Alive - Ruth Kluger about a Holocaust survivor - i have a 20 page paper i wrote on it if you want any follow up HA HA

I just complete this book called the Kite Runner ( I think they made or are making a movie out of it. Sure Oscar nomination. I do a lot of reading (various types of novels), but I loved it. It is by Khaled Hosseini

Here is what the summary is.

The Kite Runner tells the story of Amir, a well-to-do Pashtun , who is haunted by the guilt of betraying his childhood friend Hassan, the son of his father's servant. The story is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of the monarchy in Afghanistan through the Soviet invasion, the mass exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the Taliban regime.

It is a serious book but is very very good and some parts are funny.

I'm about to read Otherwise Engaged by Suzanne Finnamore. This is what it's about.

'Suzanne Finnamore's comic novel chronicles the happy couple's year-long engagement--which, to judge from Eve's Valium intake, is about 11 months too long. Eve and Michael bicker over every last detail: whether to hire a professional photographer or one of Michael's advertising-director buddies; which one of them wastes more money; who used up the last can of chicken stock and didn't add it to the shopping list. At 36, Eve throws more tantrums than the average toddler, and Michael's moodiness and problems with his ex-wife certainly don't help. The result is one drama-queen dilemma after another, none of them much ameliorated by Eve's slapstick sessions with 'a seventy-year-old Marin County prominent Jungian.'

Here is a review about it: 5 stars
I am going to be married in four months. Assuming I'm not hit by a bus tomorrow or eat warm mayonnaise by accident. And I am going crazy. As a gift, my friend, Ann, gave me a copy of Otherwise Engaged, by Suzanne Finnamore. I was like, 'you want me to READ???' She said, 'Just read it.' So I did.I would like my review to be a gigantic bullhorn to EVERY woman who is either engaged, about to be engaged, wanting to be engaged or wishing to be so. SOMEBODY FINALLY GETS IT.That's what I would shout. This book is absolutely important and wonderful. For the first time, SOMEBODY has come forward and talked about the anxiety that we feel when we are in a relationship. I mean the real stuff, the stuff we think but don't say and sometimes don't even admit we think. This is a very brave novel, and I am so personally grateful to the writer (Suzanne Finnamore) for writing it. Aside from being paralyzingly funny, it's all TRUE. She gets it. I have been going out of my mind thinking I am the only person who is feeling what I feel and then all of a sudden, SMACK.

Sorry it's so long.

Re: Some good book recommendations please!

My Sister's Keeper, The Pact, Keeping the Faith, Perfect Match all by Jodi Picoult. (On a side note- I wasn't thrilled with The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult...I read the whole thing by skimming through the pages for relevant information to the plot- a bit too much going on outside the storyline)

The Memory Keepers Daughter by Kim Edwards

Blackbird and Stillwaters both by Jennifer Lauck

Anything by Jennifer Weiner..

There's so many more--- I'll have to go through my bookshelves at home

Oh- and if you're an animal lover read Marley and Me (by John Grogan)...it was great- made me laugh and cry out loud

I just read 'you'll never nanny in this town again.' it was a true story of a girl who moves to LA and becomes a nanny for celebrities. It was a fun read! It would be a good beach read for this summer!

Melissa girl, you've come to the right place! I'm such a bookworm

Diary of a Mad Bride
Great book about a girl who claims to be too laid back to get caught up in the trials and tribulations of wedding planning... yeah right, who's she kidding!

Something Borrowed
Really good book about a man and two lifelong friends and love and betrayal. Surprisingly good!

Something Blue
A spinoff to Something Borrowed... we see what happens after 'it' all goes down <>

My Sisters Keeper
I know you don't have sisters Melissa, but you are close with your FSIL, right? Well this book is about a family and 2 sisters, one of which is very ill. It really evokes every single human emotion and it's sooooooooo good!!!

The Pact: A Love Story
Young love, (what's better than that) and the two families involved. Again, a page turner.. you don't know who to believe, who to trust, or who to sympathize with.

**You really can't go wrong with any Jodi Picoult book... the woman is a God send!

The Nanny Diaries
A nanny has internal struggles with the way the parents she works for 'raise' their child. A good quick read. Read it before the movie comes out with Scarlett Johansen!

Passion, Betrayal, & Killer Highlights

Sex, Muder, and a Double Latte
A fun chicky muder mystery. I know you're afraid of your own shadow, but so am I and I thought these were great!!

The Other Woman
Newlyweds, specifically the wife, has to learn to deal with her MIL who is worse than any MIL that any bride on this site talks about...

Jamima J.
A great read about a woman who is learning to deal with her body image, the way she looks inside and out and how other people see her.

Good In Bed
A plus size gal has to deal with reading all about her relationship, intimate details and all, with an ex who writes a new column for a men's mag.

Little Earthquakes
Women who come together over their pregnacies, marriages and pitfalls.

In Her Shoes
BETTER THAN THE MOVIE!!!!!!!!

Little Altars Everywhere
This book came BEFORE Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (made into a movie with Ashley Judd). This book is about little girls who come together in Louisiana years and years ago and how they grow to be the greatest friends being there for one another thru every up and down (tons of downs!!!)

Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood
The girls from Little Altars Everywhere are all grown up with their own children... soooooo gooooooood!!!! These 2 books are some of my all time faves!!!!

OK... now that's a list!
