I found out today my parents offered me a extra diamond that my father purchased from my grandfather's estate. My mom has the other diamond that she put in a setting and its fairly large in my book and I know they are work 2-2.5K per diamond so I guess that is pretty large.
Issue: DH is not going to happy about it and I kinda don't blame him. He purchased this ring because he loved me and that is what he could afford. I have had issues with my setting being white gold because it is turning yellow every 3 months. DH did agree to switch out the setting to plat when we had some extra cash.
I am just not sure what to do now. I figured if I take the diamond use it as a center stone in a setting that is more like me (art deco/antique) and my current ering diamond as a side stone and purchase the same size diamond as a second side stone would that be so bad of me?
I don't want to be this 'I NEED A HUGE STONE' biach because I am soooo not that perso. My parents didn't pay for our wedding (which we are very happy about that) we did so maybe this is there thing to do now.

Re: Some odd news - ring related Poll
How about having a jeweler cut it in half and make stud earrings. I'd kill for a 1 carat stud in each ear. In this way, you'd get to keep the integrity of FH's gift to you and get to memorialize your grandfather and his jewels.

if your DH is going to be hurt then I say keep your e-ring as is and make the estate diamond into a matching pendant -- preferably in platinum so eventually it will all be the same.

Just a thought...what about keeping your ering (switching for plat as planned), since your DH picked it out. And using the other diamonds and making a 'legacy' ring? Something to pass on to your children (down the line)? Especially since the diamonds were given to you from your parents? Just an idea?

Why not use the new diamond to make a solitaire necklace?

This is a good idea but I think it will reduce the value of the diamond
2 one carat studs is not = to a two carat stone

I will make it into a pendant that match the style of your ring.

Maybe your father can offer it to FH and suggest he give it to you as whatever kind of gift he would like???

Re: Some odd news - ring related Poll
See i am not sure if he will be mad mad so i am going to talk it over with him. I just didn't know even talking about it makes me evil because I am not sure about these things. New territory for me.
My parents are setting rules for this diamond, they will not let me cut it up (tried that thinking of earrings) but as it was said it would reduce the value and my grandfather wanted them to passed on to us grandkids but didn't put it in exact words in the will and that is why my dad purchased it from the estate instead of selling them to split the cash with his sisters and brother.
WHOLE big thing when my grandpa passed away, another story. Maybe I will do a necklace in the end.

I would definetly make the diamond into earrings or a necklace. You already have the diamond ring so why not get something different

Do not split the diamond! You'll lose A LOT of value. I would just pitch it to your FH and see how he feels about it. Let him know how much the ring he bought for you means to you but you just wanted to get his opinion on the situation. Just make sure he knows that you're not doing this to be insulting but just pondering a knocking opportunity.

I also am not sure if that is the size of the diamond - I think the OP said that the stone is worth $2,000 - $2,500.

I wasn't sure. She said 2-2.5K and when they abbreviate Carat it is usually with a K..but I'm not sure if that's just for gold. But, thanks for citing the alternative.

i love the idea of a legacy ring i think thats such a sentamental idea and then you can get your antique/art deco ring! and wear it on your right hand..
my mom wears my great grandmas diamond wedding band when she gets dressed up and her band from my dad everyday so maybe you can do something like that or wear it as a right hand ring

I think you should do a necklace & maybe after your married a bit..you can change it in like a few years or so. Right now things are fresh...so keep what he got you.

Re: Some odd news - ring related Poll
I would suggest a necklace or maybe a right hand ring. I wouldn't change your e-ring, I know I could never do that, way too much sentimental value. Plus, if you do a necklace or a different ring, it's easier to pass it on in the family.

I say definitely do a necklace pendant.
Then over time, when you can afford to, also get a pair of earrings so you pass on the necklace and earrings (and possibly the e-ring) to your kids or grandkids.

i would not change my ring, that would just make ur dh upset he worked hard at picking out and getting ur ring....i would do something else with the other diamond, maybe a pendandt or something
