Re: someone set me straight--job related
I gotta tell you - I for one have never had a job like that - I started here when I was your age - I was always the youngest - now I am 33 and I am still here - but it is a county job and I feel fortunate for having it - I didn't go to college.

I'm setting you straight ... FIND SOMETHING ELSE!
I know you're going to get a lot of this on the thread, but you are WAY TO YOUNG to feel that way about your job (sorry, take it from granny, it's true
). Not that figuring out what you want to do or actually being able to get a job in the field will be easy, but start the engine running.
Good luck!
(maybe you can be a professional Secret Santa organizer?
)

Re: someone set me straight--job related
Hi Michi - well you probably already know what my advice will be (and I'm another old granny such as Wendy, so we speak from experience
)Anyhow even though my job right now is completely unfulfiling and boring as hell, it wasn't always this way for me. I stay at my job now purely for the fact that I made pretty good money being a legal sec'y - because that is the point that DH and I are at, we want to get a house, start a family, etc.
But when I first started working FT at my first law firm when I was 19 year young (yikes I was that young once!) I didn't think about the money. I wanted a big change. I hardly knew the city but I made it a point to start working in Manhattan, and I loved it. Back then I made lots of friends (girls who I still keep in touch with to this day), we'd go out for happy hours all the time, etc. And I felt very fulfilled in my work , mainly because I was learning so much and worked with really a very exciting , energized bunch of young litigators who made the job seem FUN. SO I'm happy for those years of my life and the fact that I got more out of work than just a paycheck, etc.
I do truly believe that at your age, you should not be this unhappy with your work . the world is wide open for you and you have plenty of avenues you could take if you just start looking around. Anytime I truly needed to make a switch , I would just start interviewing like crazy , even for things I knew I woulnd't be good at - just to test the waters to see what was out there, etc
While you shouldn't base your 'social life' around your work environment and that sort of thing, if you feel like your job is a dead end then NOW is the best time in your life to try and change that (when you are young, have no ties, etc... )
Its such a hard thing to make a change when you are comfortable in your present situation - but in the long run, you might very well wind up happier that you shook up your life a bit, ya know?

Re: someone set me straight--job related
it's definitely possible to find all the things you want. but it's going to take some effort on your part. you need to sit down and make a list of things you really want in a job, then narrow down to things you cannot live without, then try and think of jobs that will fit those criteria. life's too short to be miserable at work. don't be afraid to change jobs. it's really not that scary. trust me i do it like it's going out of style. i've been here for 4 months and i'm already looking again
