Something interesting that happened at my wedding... what would YOU do?
Something I read just triggered a memory of something that happened at my wedding. I'm curious how some of you would handle the situation.
This is what happened:
Our 4yr old flowergirl (DH's niece) started cupping her hands over her ears at the reception because the music was 'too loud' for her. She and her family were seated at the table furthest from the DJ - intentionally.
First, my MIL's sister approached us and asked us to ask the DJ to lower the music. Then my MIL approached my husband and made the same request. Then, the FGs father (DH's BIL) made the same request.
No one else was complaining about the volume of the music. It was definitely at a reasonable volume for a party.
I'll tell you what we did/what happened in a bit, but how would YOU handle this? And what do you think of them asking 3 times?

I would have told them to perhaps take her home. I love loud music! She was probably just tired. I am sure it wasnt that easy.. But I would never tell my DJ to turn down the music. I think it was a bit rude to ask three times.

I think it's kind of rude. I mean this is your wedding did they think you attention really needed to be averted to the music level.
On the other hand if I were them, I would have gone to the DJ directly.
Lastly I would have said ok, and just never addressed it. Basically I would have blown them off but I'm a B***h

LOL - hmmm, were they Spanish?
I also had this happen at our wedding, fi's mom said that she couldn't 'talk' and could the DJ 'lower the music'...hmmmm, NO! it's a reception and people are 'dancing as you speak!'...LOL. So to answer your question, I think it's insane that they asked once, let alone 3X and even more so that they did at a wedding where people are supposed to be dancing. I mean, they weren't complaining during dinner of course, because it wasn't time to dance! No one else was complaining either at ours and we were talking to everyone without a problem. And the IL's were sitting at table 2, the first table on the left, completely away from the DJ! So we handled it by telling her (my great new DH!) sorry mom, nothing I could do, but if there's something wrong with your food or drink, let me know.

I would have told them that this was OUR wedding and a celebration party not a child's birthday party.. Everyone else is enjoying themselves so if you feel it is too loud please feel free to bring her up to the bridal suite where it is much more quiet.
( as nicely as I good all the while with a big smile on my face so they dont think I am being nasty about it)

Was it an evening wedding? She was probably tired. If she were my child, I would have either taken her home or made a comfy spot for her to fall asleep. At my cousin's wedding, our little cousin (FG also) who was four fell asleep on the floor in a corner where she was safe. At that age, your FG was probably just tired from all that was going on. The parents should have realized this, and also realized that as her parents this is their problem to deal with, and not yours. I think it was rude to bother you with this, given that no one else felt the music was too loud.

I would not have done a thing about it except ask them to stop bothering DH at his PARTY.

That's proabably what I would have done. at my wedding it was possible to go outside ( and it was nice out Sandra, but you'd know that ) so I wold have suggested they take her outside for a little break.
I think if you take a 4 year old to a wedding, you have to expect that you may end up leaving early, especailly if it is at night.

Actually, to me, since I wrote it, it's pretty funny...and since I am Spanish it makes total sense...but then again I'm not uptight.

I don't think she meant anything bad about it.

Being Spanish had nothing to do with the loud music, but rather with the fact that at least in my case, they lacked the 'tact' or 'ettiquette' to keep that to themselves...or at least speak to the DJ themselves. Why would they approach the bride or groom or both and ask that the music be lowered? At least in my case this was the first 'real' wedding to a lot of my guests and even still, they're not savvy when it comes to protocol AT ALL. In any case, JimmysBride has yet to respond (and as can be noted, I meant it as a joke, kind of an 'inside' joke since I know JB, like myself, had a spanish wedding)...not sure why people are confused...it was and is my opinion, not a fact, no need to get so 'confused'.

Re: Something interesting that happened at my wedding... what would YOU do?
Same thing happened at my wedding with MIL! Though her table was seated fairly close to the band. I LOVE my MIL, but she is a very typical polish mother - very finnicky and everything has to be just so. She approached DH during the wedding telling him several times the music was too loud - usually he accomodates her but the last time she did it, he told her, mom, this is a wedding, the music is supposed to be a little loud and if it really bothers you, you can go sit outside, but we're not going to ask the band to lower the volume (there was a nice patio area outside the reception room and the weather was gorgeous that day, so she ended up spending a lot of time out there with Dh's brother).
