Something interesting that happened at my wedding... what would YOU do?

Original post by JimmysBride

Something I read just triggered a memory of something that happened at my wedding. I'm curious how some of you would handle the situation.

This is what happened:

Our 4yr old flowergirl (DH's niece) started cupping her hands over her ears at the reception because the music was 'too loud' for her. She and her family were seated at the table furthest from the DJ - intentionally.

First, my MIL's sister approached us and asked us to ask the DJ to lower the music. Then my MIL approached my husband and made the same request. Then, the FGs father (DH's BIL) made the same request.

No one else was complaining about the volume of the music. It was definitely at a reasonable volume for a party.

I'll tell you what we did/what happened in a bit, but how would YOU handle this? And what do you think of them asking 3 times?

I would have said, 'ok', gone directly over to the DJ, very obiosuly talk to him and either

1) tell him to pretend to lower the music
2) tell him to lower the music for now, and bring it back up at the next song

Am I bad?

Actually the more I think of it lol I probably would have been more likely to do that then anything else. If someone annoyed me or said something I didnt like I really did not want to talk to them at all that day and I think that would shut them up... at least for the time being

I would just have been up front and explained (although it seems obvious to me) that this is an adult party- where music is loud for people to dance and have fun, and that if she is really uncomfortable, it is fine for her to go home or to the bridal suite since her flower girl duties are over. my FG is MY niece, who I love dearly, but I would not alter my party b/c she was cranky.

It probably would have been better for them to ask the DJ themselves, or take the FG outside, but, I do agree that often at weddings the music is just a little too loud. I know that a lot of people come to dance and enjoy it, but some people would like to just sit at their table and talk to relatives that maybe they haven't seen in a while. And maybe there's no place for them to sit outside the ballroom, or they're older. Many of my older relatives complain about this.

I agree. But, usually when it is too loud, there is more than group of people complaining. It was a big day for the FH, she was probably tired and cranky.

I got this idea from one of the DJs I met with. We were telling him how we hate the electric slide and stuff like that and do NOT want it played, and eh said at least 10 people are going to request it, and he said the best solution he finds is to tell them yes, he just has to find a palce to fit it in, and then go fidget with the CD's. LOL Makes them feel better thah if you say now, and hopefully they will forget!

Okay - sorry it took so long... work - ya know!

Well... aside from DH getting more than a little annoyed. He told everyone flatly, 'No' each time someone asked. He said this is a party and the music is at a reasonable volume.

His mother actually pleaded with him at one point. I personally thought it was so rude that they would ask repeatedly. Once, okay, I understand. But THREE times??

What happened was that his sister ended up getting pissy and leaving early with the baby. They didn't make a big stink about it, but it was obvious. Her husband came up and asked DH once more, DH said no, and then he said 'Well, then we're leaving'.

And we were like 'Oh well, sorry you have to go! Bye now!'

BTW, I would have been furious if they went to the DJ first (even though I know our DJ would never do that without checking with us first).

Wow, they left?

Glad to have you respnd woman - feathers were ruffled while you were gone! LOL

BTW, knowing your DJ I am certain the music was not that loud...Jose just doesn't seem like a kid doing a loud wedding (no, that would have been my wedding, with the club type DJ ), so they were being VERY picky.

I'm sure you had fun regardless (and probably more after they left)...and out of curiousity, where they Spanish? OK, I'll stop before I get hate FM's!

I would have been too. I even almost told my band to not take requests. ( cotrolling much? )

My mom wanted to ask the Maitre d if he could turn up the AC, but she asked me first. I thought that was fine, b/c she was my mom & I agreed that it was hot, but I was do busy to deal with it.

Was it an evening wedding? She was probably tired. If she were my child, I would have either taken her home or made a comfy spot for her to fall asleep. At my cousin's wedding, our little cousin (FG also) who was four fell asleep on the floor in a corner where she was safe. At that age, your FG was probably just tired from all that was going on. The parents should have realized this, and also realized that as her parents this is their problem to deal with, and not yours. I think it was rude to bother you with this, given that no one else felt the music was too loud.

I completely agree

Me too. And for anyone rude enough to bother me with this, I would've said I'm sorry but it's a wedding - there will be music and it will be loud because we've got reason to celebrate here. Maybe it's time for FG to be taken to bed.

I too would've been very angry if they went to the DJ first. And, sometimes it seems like people don't think ahead - you can see this happening. I know she's a FG, but if it were my daughter, and she was the FG, I might've had a friend or sitter come pick her up from the reception early to take her to bed at decent hour, and let me and FH enjoy ourselves for the rest of the wedding.

Re: Something interesting that happened at my wedding... what would YOU do?

We didn't have children at our wedding except for our ring bearer and jr. bridesmaid. I can't imagine my BIL complaining about the volume.

I probably would have told the parents that if they knew the child had sensitive hearing, they should have gotten ear plugs for her.

My ring bearer did get tired and cranky, but went into the library at WM and plopped down on the couch and did this.

omg, how cool was that.

Re: Something interesting that happened at my wedding... what would YOU do?

I would have said (the first time) 'Sure' and done nothing

The 2nd time, I would have said, 'Okay, let me remind him again' and still done nothing.

The 3rd time, I would have said, 'oh, he did lower it'

It's very rude for people to complain about ANYTHING at a wedding, let alone complain to the BRIDE or GROOM. That's just unacceptible.
