Soo frustrated and disappointed! (vent-kinda long)

Original post by MerSaysEh

So today we started looking at venues, and went to 4 places on LI, and have 3 tomorrow in Manhattan. I'm just feeling really frustrated and spent because these places on LI that look amazing on the website don't look like that in person. On top of that I really think the venues in Manhattan are ones I'm going to like but I felt so ganged up by FH and his mom. I love his mom, I'm lucky like that, but they both were talking about how they really want it on LI even though I have been saying my family (who are in Canada) would really love it and it would be easier in Manhattan. I just felt like there was no one on my side today because no one from my family is here and I'm doing all this with FH's mom. Even though we have a really good relationship I feel like she doesn't trust me to make good choices and also really wants it to be convenient for her and her guests which I get but ALL my family is coming from OOT so I want to consider them too. I just feel very emotionally drained and disappointed with our search today.

If anyone knows of venues on LI that are sort of loft-like and very sort of sparse in their decor PLEASE let me know. Thanks.

I just caught on to this thread. I have pictures of Carlyle in my album if it helps.

Re: Manhattan Penthouse--I totally understand that people told you that you'd be cramped there--we were checking it out for 200 pp and they said it would be fine but there was no way we could do it. I think 170 would be tight there too.

I agree with the Steiner Studio recommendation though!

Also consider Bridgewaters and the Lighthouse (Lighthouse is the same caterer as my venue, New York Botanical Gardens and they are phenomenal). Tribeca Rooftop is great too but its a bit more than the others. I have been to a few events at Carlye on the Green and its lovely as well.

I don't want to say anything bad about the places I looked today because the people were very nice (with the exception of one which I won't name) and they were pretty just not the look I am going for. I looked at the Royalton which is the only one that may stay on the list, and then WaterView which we liked the ballroom but we have some guests with mobility issues and the cocktail hour and restrooms are down a long flight of stairs so that won't work, and Woodlands which is just too sort of country club-y for me.

I am looking for a loft type look, wood floors, big windows and not a lot of carpet/color. Something that can do the ceremony, reception and cocktail hour all on one level or at least has an elevator between them

Thanks for the support guys, it makes me feel better. All day and evening I kept thinking 'i just want to go vent to the LIW girls and move past today'.

I have been in your shoes. I'm sorry to hear it. Unfortunately for me and FMIL, it was the cost. She couldn't see us spending the kinda money that it would take to have a Manhattan loft wedding. I decided that it's not the venue that makes the wedding but the people and atmosphere. So I gave in. I chose JT because FH LOVED it (I'm not joking, he almost cried he loved it so much) and because you get a lot of bang for your buck. If I had gone with my original (gorgeous) choice, we would've had little to no money for anything else. This way, I get to spend all the money I would've spent on the loft, on little extras.

But, if you're able to afford it, you should do what you and FH want. No offense to FMIL, but I wouldn't bring her to the appointments. Not until you and FH have narrowed it down to one or two places. How about checking out The Metropolitan or there's also The Metropolitan Building in LIC.

The original venue I wanted was Stage 6 at Steiner Studios in Brooklyn. Check them out, too. It's a movie studio and has a really nice rooftop lounge. It has GORGEOUS views and Abigail Kirsch is the exclusive caterer, so you know you're going to get great food. Don't worry, hang in there, you'll find something you love!

ETA: Here's a link to The Metropolitan. It's got that loft feel but it's on LI so everyone can have their cake and eat it, too. Good luck!

We loooved Tribeca Rooftop but just felt it was too expensive for what we needed, we wound up going with their sister hall in Long Island, Land's End, we love it and it's definitely 'sparsely decorated' so you may want to look into it. We loved the idea of Manhattan Penthouse but when we went there weren't as impressed, some of the chairs and things looked rickety and we HATED the BM we met with, plus cocktail hour space we found to be very small. If you can afford Tribeca Rooftop I'd try there though!!

First of all I just wanted to say CONGRATS!!!! I can truly relate to your situation, as we looked at many many MANY places from Wading River to Manhattan, to the Bronx. I caught sooo much flack from the FIL's (at the time) about Manhattan. 'How are we going to get there?' 'Why so far?' 'Where will we park?' On and on and on. I said to my FH if I have to bus these freaking people from Glen Cove to Manhattan, I will do it. In the end, we booked the very last place we looked, The Royalton which happened to be in our town! Go figure! Anyway, I wanted to suggest and recommend some things to you.

I know you're checking out Tribeca Rooftop and I think that's a GREAT place, and a true happy medium for everyone. It's a gorgeous venue and the food is very good from what I've heard. It's a bit of both worlds, lofty and high ceilings, yet lots of light.

We looked highly into Manhattan Penthouse, had a tasting and all. We LOVED the food, but didn't think it was big enough at all for our 150 people. So for 170 I do think the CH space is too small.

I would really really really check out Prince George Ballroom We ALMOST booked here, I personally loved it sooo much, but in the end the Royalton was a lot more convenient. Especially because my grandmother was 97 at the time and being in Roslyn was the ultimate convenience factor. But Prince George is an absolutely AMAZING one of a kind place. You must go look! They have an art gallery space where the CH would be, and a gorgeous gilded Russian Baroque style ballroom that was just recently renovated. It is run by a non-profit organization, and the profits from the events they do go to their organization that helps the house the homeless. It's catered by the people that do Bryant Park Grill. We had an AMAZING tasting and it was just a great special place.

If you end up back on LI, I honestly think there is no place like the Royalton. It is all about you there. They catered each and every detail for US. We had a wine tasting and hand picked every wine because my mom was insistent on that. They got us an amazing Argentinian Sparkling Wine that my mom was sooo excited to see, she said she hadn't found it in years. They even got White Castle burgers for our after party because they knew how much Mike loved them! I am so so so happy with my choice. Feel free to FM me about anything at all!! Good luck to you!!!!

carlyle, water's edge in LIC, bridgeview yacht club in island park (CHECK THIS PLACE OUT!), galapagos art space and bubba's in brooklyn (right under the bridge. awesome)

good luck!

eta: battery park gardens -- and they are reasonably priced for manhattan!

Wow! You guys are amazing! Its kinda funny that this came up again today because I posted it over a week ago and am STILL having trouble!

Many of the places people have suggested we have looked at, and right now Royalton and Bridgewaters are our favorites, but I am going to Manhattan Penthouse tomorrow just to take a look.

All the suggestions have been so unbelievably helpful! Thank you guys sooooo much!

Re: Soo frustrated and disappointed! (vent-kinda long)

I'm gonna suggest two Metropolitans here.

1) The Metropolitan in Glen Cove is gorgeous, run by nice people, and has a great food rep. You can do both the ceremony and reception there.

2) The Metropolitan Building in Long Island City is also a gorgeous, loft-like space with a good reputation. Transportation-wise, the advantage for your guests is the 7 train, which runs to both Grand Central Station and the Woodside LIRR.

Also of note: The Foundry in LIC is gobsmackingly beautiful, but very expensive.
