Hi everybody.
Haven't been on in a while, but I'm really upset about this album thing and I was hoping maybe some of you could give me your opinions.
Here's the deal . . . DH and I LOVE our wedding proofs. Lots of creative/photojournalistic shotsand the studio was great with everything. We've had a very hectic year and we only got around to thinking about the album a few months ago.
When we did sit down with someone at the studio we were having trouble narrowing down our shots -- and we thought we'd be talking to the designer about choices, but no such luck. In the end we had to do a lot of compromising, but we narrowed down the shots, keeping in some unique ones that we imaged would make our album really special. (example -- just my BoK or my shoe, etc)
Unfortunately, the designer gave us what I think is a very very plain, even boring layout. And apparently the only way that I can get some of the things I imagined is to pay a redesign fee and wait another 3 months -- which I am not willing to do.
So, here I am . . . very disappointed in my album. And my designer will make any changes I specifically ask for, but at this point I am practically designing the album myself.
I'm attaching the layout and hoping some of you might be able to give me your opinions.
Maybe I'm being too much of a perfectionist. But it just seems boring to me -- especially the first couple of pages. At this point I am considering paying the extra $$ and getting a redesign . . .
What do you think? TIA

Oh I see what you mean, the backgound is kind of boring. Just color, no photos. JMO, I would pay whatever it took to get it the way I wanted.

I agree - maybe if you could have them blow up photos to act as the background that would spice it up.

Your pictures are beautiful; but I agree the book lacks the extra. In my opinion, if it is that important I would pay the extra money to get it fixed or be a typical New Yorker and make sure I get the book done for free. If your crafty you and your husband could make a scrapbook album of your proofs.

i see what you mean that some of the pages are plain....but honestly i kind of like it simple better i dont like when there are to many different photos all over the page think it takes away from the pictures...maybe he can do borders or somethin on the page to spice it up a bit

I love your pictures. But you need to be happy with the album, too- it's your lasting memories for your wedding and you want to enjoy looking at it. If you're unhappy with it i would pay the fee and have it redone. Didn't they send you a proof of the album before they printed it so you could make changes then? I thought they were supposed to do that. If they didn't it doesn't sem fair for them to charge you a redesign fee!

I think your pictures came out beautiful and the ones you both picked to be in your album are great! Maybe you and DH can think about some changes that you want to have done this way you do not have to pay to redesign it, and they will do the changes for you for free. I know it is time consuming to do it yourself, but at least you will be happy with the end result.

Thanks, everyone, for your encouragement. To answer your questions the studio will work with me to fix whatever changes I ask for with the album. And they have been very nice so I think I'll just keep giving them my opinions.

I agree. I would have some of the pics for the background. tthis way it doen't look so plain. The pics are great thought. What photographer are you using?

This is a digital album right? If so, I would have them add faded enlarged pictures to create the background of a lot of your pages. Maybe you can avoid a re-design fee if you are simply 'adding' to the design. Especially if you pick out the pictures that you would like blown up. If they give you a hard time I would argue that they should have put a little thought into how to handle the background in the first place. It shouldn't be your job to point out that the design is lacking.

I like the layout and some solid background it makes it classic looking but certainly not every background. I would deff. do as above blow up small parts for background or get something floral ,etc to your tastes. Also mix is up a bit with b&w and selective color here and there.
Pictures are very nice though

I think the pics are gorgeous and they perfectly 'tell your wedding day story'!! Dont be sad! If you want the background to be more artistic, perhaps you could have a faded pic in the background?

Is the album already printed??
If not there is no reason to pay that fee.
My photographer redesigned my album until I was happy with the layout.

I like the layout but I agree with the background. Dig out your contract because if this isn't what you wanted and it's in the contract you shouldn't have to pay for anything. Also if the designer didn't help then I don't think they should get paid for anything more than submitting your ideas!

I think the photos are gorgeous but you really need to be happy with them in the long run. Talk to them and see what they will do to make you happy, you are the customer!

I agree that the background looks so plain. The pictures are gorgeous, they should be the background. You're doing all the work, but they get a redesign fee??? That's alittle ridiculous!

As a graphic designer I would always do a proof first with the agreement of what the design should look like. Now if you left it up to them (which it sounds like you didn't) then okay maybe they have a right ot charge extra but honestly if this person has been working in that particular of design field i think you know what is expected of a digital/mag. Its not like this is there first time seing something or working on something like this (photographer)style album.
There really is no excuse and you shouldn't be charged. Just tell them listen just add some texture/pictures blow up in teh background. Change so and so pics to b & w (not a hard tasks) and MAYBE do a selective color treatment.
