So I met some of my students today and I felt like I was all over the place. Please tell me teaching gets a little better once the school year starts, I feel like between all the clerical work, getting to know the students and giving them the rules I'm going to lose it.
My school has half days tomorrow and friday so I'll only be able to give the rest of my kids rules, rules, rules, their seats and their textbooks. Monday I start my lessons but I feel so disorganized.
Please tell me it will get better once I get into the groove of things....The Principal even laughed and said to me 'you poor thing, you look like you don't know up from down right now' then she told me not to worry....

My first year was hellish, we all have terrible first years. It will get better but it will take time. Once you're into the real school year (not rituals and routines and rules and all that) you will find it becomes much easier. Don't give up!

Dont worry...the first day of school my first year I came home and cried. I was so tired and I thought I would never get the hang of it. But you will. once you get into a routine you will be fine. Dont be afraid of making mistakes or trying new things. Be yourself, let the kids see that you are human and they will LOVE YOU. Try to be organized with you planning and stay on top of the paper work so that you don't fall behind. The beginning of the year is always rough..hang in there and feel free to FM if you need anything!

Thanks girls. The staff at my school is really nice, they all tell me it will get better. I really do hope it does. I am sooo not giving up. I've wanted to be a teacher since I was a kid and I am going to do it!!!

i HATE the first day of school!!! this is my 4th year, and every year i get jitters....i hate getting to know the kids....the whole first month of figuring out the chatterboxes, the weak and strong kids, and the lazy kids.......i am so much more at ease once i get into my cirriculum.....it'll get better.....give it at least a week or 2 before you judge....didnt you student teach??? you should know how it is!

I did student teach but it was different, I felt like a guest in the CTs classroom. The students already knew the rules, had their seats, etc. and the CT took care of most of the clerical duties outside the classroom.
I'll get used to it though, I am determined to get to know all my students and get myself organized.

its always hectic in the beginning..i'm an infant teacher but our first day was just parents brinign in stuff...i mean EVERYTHING and i was trying to organize everything, figure out the kids schedules, doing feedings, diaper changes...i left with a headache..it's getting better each day tho.

I agree, its always hell in the beginning! It gets much better when you have established your routines, oh and follow the old adage, dont smile until Christmas!! Be super tough at first, it will make your life easy in the end!!!

first year goes a little something like this:
it totally gets better, and on top of that, i hate the first week of school. once you and the kids get into a groove, it will feel much better. this is my 5th year and i've still felt pretty clumsy and scattered these last 2 days.

I am late answering this bc I was sleeping!!!!!! It is totally overwhelming, but it will get better. I promise! it will be a great year, just remember to breathe.

hey maggie ... as you know this is my first year teaching too and it is a lot ... a lot of things to remember. its nuts! but today was day two and i feel better already! i think once you get to teach and get into your thing ... life gets easier ... except for the planning

It gets easer The first week is always rough. Once they are in a routine and you get to know the kids, everything gets easier. This is my 8th year and I am out of the classroom and I still feel like I got stuck in a tornado not knowing which end is up. You will be fine don't worry.

Breathe. I promise you it works. And, when you are not breathing, chat with us and we will calm you down.
Its hard. Today we had to go to St.Brendans for a workshop and I just wanted to go home. Sometimes the kids will drive you crazy and you will want to quitbut just think, you can really help ONE child....

And thats what matters. I was told today by a parent that I really helped a child last year overcomehis fears and over the summer everything was 'msDowd taught us this, ms dowd taught us that' and it meant the world to me. It took away from all the negative things that happened last year...

Hang in there- it will get better!!! Its exhausting but once you get into the routine it will be fine!!

Dont worry it will get better.... I am not saying it will happen right away, but it will def. get easier! Dont feel bad.....my first year of teaching, until about December, each day I saw my principal he would look at me and ask me if i was ok....lol i guess you could tel i was having a hard time

hey sweetie!!! i too am in my first year of teaching and it is TOTALLY overwhelming!!!! the thing i keep remembering is that EVERYONEEEEEEEE has their first year... and EVERYONEEEEEEE is overwhelmed...and it DOESSS get easier as the time goes by!!!!!

Awww thanks so much for that. It helps knowing that I'm not alone. I keep telling myself it will get better, I think as long as I keep a positive outlook then I will be ok. I will def. FM you if I need a shoulder

It really does get better I promise! The first year is always the hardest, you have to adjust and really get used to all the clerical work and have loads of patients. I am sure you will be fine and I am sure that when you start your lessons and the class is a little more structured you will feel like you are accomplishing more than just rules! Good Luck!
