Speaking of new cars...

Speaking of new cars...

We're going looking today. Does anyone know the best way to haggle prices? I'm so bad at this, and DH is even worse!
And, we're both in sales

Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

Re: Speaking of new cars...

go to msn.com and go to cars and print out a sheet with alllllllllllllllllllll the info on cars and di packages.. that way you know what each package costs and have clear knowledge of whether or not you're getting a deal..

also, pick up the sunday paper and look through. there are always sales.. go to the dealers with the sales OR use those deals to try and haggle..

Re: Speaking of new cars...

Know exactly what u want to pay!! do not let them talk u into paying more. FH just bought a new car a few months ago. He had a set monthly payment amount in mind and wasn't going to go beyond it. The salesman would go back and forth w/ his manager everytime FH said 'no, i really need to spend this amount only'
But, be careful b/c a couple of times he'd come back to us w/ a better amount but it was b/c he was tacking on another year to the loan! luckily, I caught it or FH would be paying for his maxima for 10 years!!!! GOOD LUCK!!!

Also, ask them to include stuff. For example, FH bought a Maxima in January and we got them to include 6 free oil changes and a free detailing.
Good Luck

Re: Speaking of new cars...

My mom went looking yesterday. My parents are getting a new car too...probably the same one...lol.

So, she asked what they could do if we are leasing two cars and the guy said I can't do anything on the price but I can throw some stuff in like pinstriping. I don't even want pinstriping!

I'm going to a different dealership today to see what they can do.

Re: Speaking of new cars...

First, do all the safety and reliability research BEFORE you go looking. Don't just listen to the sales people. Then decide if your budget can really afford the car(s) you want. If you can only spend $200 a month don't look at the Camary, you need to look at the Corrolla. Decide what features are important to you and what you can live without.

Visit more than one dealership and play them off each other. Tell them point blank 'We can do this deal for $15K, but that's as high as we can go' and make sure you can really do the deal for $17K so you have some wiggle room.

Don't pay for weird, unneeded extras and make sure you add tax, dealer BS costs etc....when discussing a price. That can add thousands to the price of the car!

itsbouttime: LOL!! Where did you get your Maxima? We got ours at the Bayside Nissan.

Re: Speaking of new cars...

Thanks Michele.
I've done all the research and have it narrowed down to a few, but really leaning towards one.

Thats exactly what I want to do...play the dealerships against each other. I was thinking of going in and just saying, 'No BS, we want 2 cars, they are being leased through a company so no worrying about financing stuff, we're a sure thing, we are looking at all the whatever type car dealers, just give us your best price' type of thing.

I also printed out a sheet with the invoice prices and the MSRP prices so I know how much play they have (I think).

Re: Speaking of new cars...

I used edmonds.com, they have great articles about leasing and buying new cars, as well as MSRP info on new cars. I printed out the sheet w. the car I wanted, and played 2 dealerships against each other. I ended up saving $4k off sticker price. Good luck!!

Re: Speaking of new cars...

marcela, we got ours at Atlantic Auto Mall. I love that car. Ours is navy. what color did u get?

Marcela1654 Posted:

Re: Speaking of new cars...

NO WAY!! Ours is also navy. LOL! That's not the color that Nissan calls it though. I don't remember the name of it now. We fell in LOVE with that color and haven't seen many of them around. Ours have a sandy color leather interior and it looks so nice with the blue.

Edited to say: It's called Majestic Blue.

Re: Speaking of new cars...

I definitely have to reiterate - do not go alone...SOME take advantage of women...

when we bought our Saab..we went to one and signed the deal and everything...it was right after 9/11 and saab usually offers 0% anyway...well they called us later to tell us that it wouldn't be 0%...but 6 1/2 %!!! WHAT??!!!

so I went back down (without DH) and told then that I wanted our deposit back (you have 3 business days) and they kept trying to talk me out of it...each time I said...I have to talk it over with DH, but please give me my deposit...it took a lot to get it back...as soon as I walked out of the dealer...they called DH and asked him if he knew what I did!!!!

we went to another dealer...got the price we wanted...interest we wanted...and the guy was super nice...he was busy and let us test drive the car on our own!! we ended up upgrading our car - and got the same price as the skeesy dealer!!

good luck!!

Re: Speaking of new cars...

too funny!!! when we saw it we were like, that is a hot car! FH looked at me and was like 'can we get it' i was like YOU sure can!! lol!! (we weren't engaged yet! didn't think of it as WE at the time) he works in a bad part of brooklyn and doesn't take it to work, he takes my car. So now, i have it during the week and he is making the payments! (we havn't joined any of our accounts yet so i still think of it as HIS money ) worked out well for me i guess!!

Oh wow yabbobay! How sleazy!!!

I'm glad you got a better deal somewhere else!

DH is definitely coming with me although he probably won't be much help with the haggling He's very shy

Re: Speaking of new cars...

Haggle on EVERYTHING!!!
From the sticker price, to your interest rate, to what you get in the car, the type of packages. Keep a time on when you are picking up your car. It took us 2.5 HOURS for my paper work to be done correctly. The secretary didn’t spell my name correctly 3x!
And I refused to sign anything with incorrect name spellings. So I bitc$ed, and got free life time oil change.
I thought I would need my Dad to co-sign the loan and they lied to me. So my Dad got PI$$ED and ready to walk out. They lowered my interest rate by 2 points.

Check out Consumer Reports too. They have a 2003 guide for cars. It tells you what are the best cars overall by each model. Then there is a break out of safety, reliability, interior décor….

BTW I did all the haggling. FH sat there in amazement the way I was talking.

Re: Speaking of new cars...

itsbouttime: LOL!
We were originally looking into the Altima b/c we thought that the Maxima would be so much more expensive. The dealer then says, come with me, I have a car to show you. And FH and I were like NO WAY, we're not going to look at a car that's over our budget. He said don't worry, we'll work something out. Of course when we saw it, we just fell in love and ended up getting it. FH traded in his Mustang and had $$ saved in the bank so he ended up just buying it outright. We were going to finance, but we decided not to.
I drive the car every once in a while, but FH is a freak when it comes to it, so I don't want to be blamed for any scratches on it.

Good Luck with it!! It's a gorgeous car
