I am having my engagement party this Friday and was wondering if I am expected to make a speech. Some people are saying that I thank people as they leave while giving them a favor and don't have to make a big speech while others are saying we should make a speech. What do you guys think?

FH and I said a thank you speech right before cutting the cake. It could just be as simple as...Thank you all for coming to celebrate with us! We look forward to seeing you all at our wedding...and thank the people who threw you the party (unless of course you threw the party)!
It might be hard to individually say Thank you to everyone as they are leaving since I felt some left in groups and it's hard to keep track.
Above all, have fun and don't stress about it!!!!!

We were planning to but the set up of my parents backyard wasn't the best to gather everyone for a speech (people in the house, in the backyard, by the pool, etc). So we just made sure to thank everyone personally for celebrating with us and we thanks my parents for hosting!
