you learn to love it... its a symbol of love... it doesnt matter what it looks like .... if it wasnt what you had envisioned, too damn bad... it came from his heart!

I have a funny story...FH and I pretty much knew that we were going to get engaged at some point this year. In October he ramdomly asked me what type of setting I liked for my ring. It came between 2 but I only looked at them online I never tried them on. We were supposed to go looking and try on rings when we were on Christmas break.

Long story short I had NEVER expected to get engaged for Christmas and like a week before Christmas we went to the jeweler to buy gifts and I ended up looking at engagement rings. The only that I originally said that I loved online- I didnt like as much as my second choice.

Turns out he had already bought the ring. (I had no idea) So I lovee the ring that he bought me-but had he not had it already had it my ring would probably be different. I still love it though!

My friend got engaged years ago and the ring that her fh bought her WAS NOT AT ALL WHAT SHE WANTED!!! (Not to sound like shes a snob but it was a .25 carat solitaire) She hated it. I think she ended up telling him that she wanted to upgrade it. But after they got married she got bands that made it 'better'.

im going to be honest - i think if after living together for 2 years and talking about e-rings if my FH got me something i didnt like it would mean there was a serious problem but in seriousness it would have meant he wasnt paying attention when he asked me what i liked and it would mean that he didnt understand my sense of style so yeah i would be upset about that - for instance if my FH got me an ascher cut in yellow gold id be like *** b/c i said i wanted a pear solitaire in white gold or platinum so i would feel like he didnt care or think of me when purchasing it

I didnt want to sound stuck up with this post--- hopefully no one will pass this judgement

I don't think its a stuck up kind of thing... its just a personal thing... great question

Actually FH asked me the other day about whether I love my ring, because my cousin just got a 3 carrot oval one and I keep saying how gorgeous oval stones are.

But it really made me think about it. I was just so emotional after it was all said and done, I think he could have given me lint and I would have went around and said omg I just got engaged, have you seen my lint?

Have you seen my lint! I love it! That's love! I'd be the same way! I was so giddy and such a mess I didn't even realize he got me a princess cut instead of a round cut which is what I said I wanted. But I still love my ring and its not his fault I'm soo indescive. When we first met I said I wanted princess cut but then I said I wanted a round cut but when we started to 'shop' around he had already purchased the ring! Talk about taking a big chance without knowing if I'd like it.

We actually returned my first ring. I loved it because he gave it to me but after talking for a while he got that it wasn't my style.
So my dad actually ended up giving him my mothers engagement ring who passed away. We took the stone out and he picked out the band and setting. So now the ring is even more special to me and he was very happy to see that!

There's a pic of it in my album!

veryy pretty ring

I would try to let him know that the ring wasn't exactly my style and see if we could both go ring shopping together to exchange it

Hmm it won't let me choose...

anyways, I didn't HATE my ring, but I don't love it either... so I explained why and we decided to get a new one together. Now he loves that one just as much as I do

I agree I think I would just talk to him and tell him-- but I give you credit because I wouldnt want to hurt his feelings-- but I wouldnt want a ring im not loving for the rest of my life either--- but they obviously lovee us so they shouldnt have a problem--jmho

Haha well truthfully I wore the ring for 5 years before we just now decided to get a new one. I feel like I paid my dues...

Edited to include: That kind of sounds awful above, so I just wanted to say I was joking. My FH knows I would've been happy with no ring, or lint...

i think it differs on how much i hate it.. if just dislike the style alittle i would just deal with it and try to grow into it because afterall my FH probably did alot of thinking before getting it.. but if i thought it was completely not what i wanted then(diamond shape/style..) i would tell him nicely..

i love my ring though my FH did a good job

exactly... totally agree... mine wasnt what i had envisioned... i was thinkin of a 3 stone ring and fh didnt pick that out.... he had no clue what i wanted b/c he always said this was HIS thing that he would pick out what HE liked... so i left it up to him... but i love it regardless... at that point, he coulda gave me a lil quarter machine plastic ring and i would have been ecstatic just b/c i waited for that 'change' in our relationship for so long!

When we first started dating I definitely wanted a princess cut, but then I changed my mind to go with a round...good thing I did bc FH used his mom's diamond from her first engagement ring, which was round. He picked out the exact setting that I wanted...and I love it...someday he says he'll upgrade it to a bigger one...

I know some of the brides have said that they wouldn't change a thing about their rings, b/c it's a symbol of love and you should wear it as is.
I agree with them, up to a certain extent.
I also believe that if this is a ring I'm going to be wearing for the rest of my life, then it should be something that I at least like (since I'll be the one wearing it)

I voted to keep the diamond and change the setting. This way you don't offend FH wiht his diamond choice/ financial budget, and at the same time you change the setting to something you would much more prefer :)

If I hated it, I would keep the center stone and change just the setting-I would tell him definitely. He wouldnt be upset, he would rather me love it then not

For me too!

I think to avoid getting jewelry that's totally not your style in the future you need to tell FH that you don't really care for the design. He may have been totally clueless and swayed by other people's opinions. If he really thought he did a great job, then you have to be particularly delicate about telling him it's not your style. If you can learn to love it that's great! Personally, I'd rather be honest (in a nice way though).
Fortunately my FH knew my likes and dislikes in jewelry already. Well he also knew exactly what I wanted for my e-ring so that was no problem. He has pretty good taste for a guy anyway!

This actually happened to two of my cousins this past spring. Cousin 1's fiance had bought her a ring on a heavy platinum band, she didn't like the band and he agreed, he spent alot of time picking out the stone and didn't for the band. They kept the stone and bought a new band.
Cousin 2's fiance picked a ring that she didn't like, they wound up exchanging the whole thing to a different shape stone and totally different setting.
I personally picked out my ring after almost 8 years of dating. My fiance wanted to make sure I loved being that I can be very picky.
I would talk to your FH and be honest!
