spin-off to eloping thread...

what would you do? quick backstory - my younger cousin teaches in HAwaii - she met an Army man there and before you can say 'Aloha' they were married. he was being deployed to Iraq so they thought it was the best thing. i have met him and he is the sweetest and of course i am very happy for them both. so, after the quick ceremony, no family was there, my cousins family send out announcements. the announcement stated that they were already married and once he returns from iraq a formal wedding will take place. now that was in the works last year, but for some reason, that got cancelled and now there is nothing going to be done to celebrate the wedding. so, i send a card of congratualtions once i heard the news, but now i'm wondering, is a gift expected? if so, what?
