spinning off Muhammad trial - death penalty

Original post by yabbobay

Ok...lets keep this nice...and share opinions...

as much as I can see why people are sentenced to the death penalty...it breaks my heart to hear about it...

I'm sure the people on the jury heard some horrific things to come to that decision...

The insanity plea is rarely used in RL - it's mostly done on television/movies. According to all the people on NPR this past week.

I don't think that the taking of another life should be about money. such as, 'better to execute than pay for them to be in jail.'...

How exactly is killing for any reason right? Is it in the reasoning? Because the end result is final... I just don't think the taking of a life is justified in ANY respect.

We aren't DOING anything by executing someone- they are DEAD GONE GOODBYE.. they will not feel sorry for what they did.. because they will be DEAD.

I agree with that Sassy, but when your tooth is rooted they remove it. If you have gangreene they remove your leg, hand, etc

If your car doesnt work you junk it, I know we are talking about a person, but in life when something doesnt work right after trying to fix it we get rid of it. Its the same thing with the death penalty

Sorry, but I do not believe this sicko would somehow 'find God' and feel bad for his crime after sitting in prison either.

Let's not forget that he had a partner (a minor) for this horrible crime as well...he needs to pay the consequenses for ruining that life as well (as willing a participant as the kid might have been....)

I just don't understand why there is so much pity for a person who KNEW EXACTLY WHAT HE WAS DOING! Why should his life be spared? He had no mercy for the people he killed....sorry, I generally believe in good things, but in this case....he deserves to die.

I used to be against the death penalty, but when my cousin got shot and murdered for NO REASON, I totally changed my way of thinking.
The people who shot him got off with a slap on the wrist It really makes you think.
What about the livces they ruined??? It is NOT fair

I have only one thing in my will other than leaving everything to my husband and it goes something like this....

To my family and loved ones: If I have passed at the hands of another, I beg of you in your anger and hurt to try to forgive and know that I would try to do the same. No matter what has happened, be it a terrorist attack, a murder, or an act of carelessness, hurting the perpetrator won't bring me back and won't heal your heart.

Please ask for rehabilitation from the courts or constructive prevention from our government, strive for forgiveness in your hearts and please don't seek the harm of another in my name. You all know me well enough to know how much that would hurt me. I love each of you and am with you every day - I will see you on the other side soon.

Love, ....

Also wanted to add that mental illness is undeniably the cause of almost all murders, homelessness and several other afflictions in society. That's a good reason that the death penalty is absolutely NO deterrent. You can't attempt to rationalize to irrational people.

It doesn't deter, it doesn't heal and it doesn't bring back the dead...the ONLY thing the death penalty does for certain is occasionally put to death innocent people.

We somehow overlook this in our court system.

I think there is a big difference between letting someone off with a slap on the wrist and executing them. There has to somewhere in the middle.

I also don't think we can go around executing people because we think they are useless members of society- if so, we'd better watch out- b/c a lot of us are very useless being on this site so much.

I just think there is something about the sanctity of human life. Whether you are religious or not (and I'm not) I don't think it is our right to extinguish it- like it wasn't Muhammad's to do either.

So what do we do with them?

have you seen the Life of David Gale? We just watched it this weekend - it got bad reviews, but we enjoyed it. And it was definitely thought provoking on the death penalty topic.

Excellent movie.

I picked the Yes- but only in some cases b/c

too many people on death row turn out to be innocent and if they were executed that would be horrible
however, if a serial killer was convicted of killing lets say 30 people and w/out a doubt did the killings, someone like that should get the death penalty

Let's hope that it will make other killers think twice about it, knowing what the consequences of that crime will be. I honestly feel the sentences given out are all too lenient, from drug sales to murder, we are too easy on our criminals.

If the death penalty worked as a deterant...i might be a supporter...but most studies show that it doesn't work at all...

Most advanced countries today have abolished the death penalty...I almost feel like it makes us like savages...

just another perspective...as a HS teacher I found that most students are against the death penalty...but not for the reasons you may think...but b/c they say it is an easy way out...I would say that close to 50% of my students commented this way...

i'm sorry but i don't understand the argument that we shouldn't use the death penalty b/c it's not a deterrent. i mean apparently putting people in jail for life isn't a deterrent either since we still have so many horrific crimes.

so then why do we do that? because it's punishment for a crime. imo, the primary purpose of a criminal sentence is not to deter other criminals but to punish the offender for their crime.

i'm just curious how those of you who oppose the death penalty feel about the terrorists who perpetrated 9/11? i mean hypothetically if we ever caught them and tried them under us law would you still feel the death penalty is unwarranted? do you still feel pity for them? just curious.

I would love to live in a society where there is true rehabilitation affectively integrated into punishment...

I am not totally for life sentencing..b/c I see no reason why a 90 year old man (and I use the man specifically b/c 80% of all crimes are performed by men ) should be in jail...

I'm not too up on international systems...maybe to find a corrections model that has been successful would be a good model...but its difficult in the US as each state is in control of their system...

as for the 9/11 masterminds...if they were convicted to death...I would still get that uneasy feeling in my tummy...but I would understand why the jury chose that as the sentencing

I loved the comedian who says..

Other states are trying to abolish Execution.. My state (Texas) is trying to put in an express lane.

There was legislation to expidite henous (sp?) crimes which death was the sentence, where three crediable witness verified.

So, if you come to Texas, pull out a gun in Wendy's and kill an innocent Teenage cause you felt like 'getting back' .. you die. Quickly. None of this 15-25 years of Taxpayers cash keeping you warm and comfy so you can earn your college degree for free and appeal your case on bogus extreme pretenses.

Like he said - The comedian

You come to Texas and kill someone, we'll kill you, it's real simple.

(I now prepare for the tons of hate FM I'll get for THAT post)

this scares me...and I read an article of a few people sentenced to death in Texas in the 80's...who were put to death...and now they found DNA linking the crimes to someone else!!!!

and aren't eye witnesses not always reliable!!

shelzyp says she doesn't commit crimes...and thats good...but what if you are accused of something you didn't do!!!
