I do not agree with the death penalty because:
1) It is not a deterrant
2) There are too many mistakes that are made in the criminal justice system
3) The death penalty is very arbitrary.
Our Criminal Justice system is not very consistent and for some things you will get the death penalty and for others you do not.
Ok.. I may agree to the mistakes (MAYBE) but deterrant.. well it's HUMANE.
I mean look at it this way.. a man is caught stealing for no other reason than to steal. He is dragged out in public and whipped to a bloody mess. Nothing tragic.. he'll survive.. He gets medical treatment and is branded a theif. NO ONE would EVER allow this to happen. We have to be 'civil'. We want so much our human rights to extend to all and I agree, but at the same time we pay the price. Last stats I saw (which was a REAL long time ago) most death row idiots in Texas weren't Texans. THose who were are just plain stupid.
I've been terrified of bad press for Texas since we got the gun legislation passed. All we need is a columbine shooting for all to come down on us as gun tooting freaks. Instead, it's been fairly quiet in comparison. Texas is different, end of story. Honestly though, some of it works.
We can NOT allow malicious crimes to continue. You drag a man behind your pickup truck for MILES cause he's black.. my friend.. you deserve to die.
You rape a woman nearly to death and leave her bleeding on a sidewalk.. You deserve to be casturated and sentenced to life.
Instead, you rob a gas station you're in jail for 15 years, you kill a kid while drinking and driving and you're sent home in 2 months, even if it was your second time around.
The penalties are so off from the crimes.
I agree with the hurry up death on those which (as stated before) it is firstly so malicious and hineous that Im talking blood curdling bad (since most Texans can take a certain amount of blood without a twitch and the jury is of peers) ... so I mean B A D. Then Secondly 3 credible witness SEE you and point you out. Come on!!! 2 may get it wrong but you can prove them wrong. 3 .. three is tough to fight. Now Im not suggesting we stick them with the needle then (don't start on how I feel that's not fair at all) we wait.. just not 15-25 YEARS like we do now.
They just don't wait as long. Everyone is due their own due process. But 3 people peg you, proof is against you, jury has convicted you and it was so bad it made the death penalty look unfair.. well you know what.. it's fair.
Going back to what some people brought up here.. what about the 9/11 terrorists? After 9/11 I told people if I could find Osama this is what I'd do...
Drop him from 110 stories in the air. Somewhere within shouting distance of the Trade Centers but not ON the sacred site. I'd let him fall. I'd let him scream his bs religious rites so one one could hear him. I'd let him have to experience what all those innocent people did who made the choice to jump. Only he didnt make that choice, we put him there to experience it as they did. No one will hear his last words and allow me to explain from personal experience. It takes an awful long time to fall 110 stories.. awfully long time.
The penalty some times.. just HAS to match the crime. But I'll settle for death by leathal injection if it gets the job done.
