FH and I really want to! I think we can do it! I really want to try and make a serious effort. I would hate to have to move away from my family. Plus some houses in the area have great prices so we will start looking for houses sooner than we thought.

I actually would love to get out of NY all together but unfortunately FH (who is also the bread winner) has a job in LI that he loves so we'll have to stay in ny. Right now we're in queens but we're looking to move to LI, nassau or suffok doesn't really matter to me but FH prefers nassau.

The only other place I could really see myself living would be Boston/Connecticut. FH and I have talked about that but it's pretty close to the real estate here so it's not really worth it. I've lived in California and worked there before. It is great for vacations but I hated working there. Everything was too laid back and I'm a total New Yorker when it comes to being high strung. So it's LI/NY for me too.

I'm crashing from '09 but this is something I have been dealing with a lot recently - I am moving to B-more next year because my FH can't get a teaching job on LI - I had always wanted to move off the island, but now that I have to, I am really sad about it. Especially leaving my parents!

If it werent for our jobs (we are both cops so we can only live in certain counties in NY) and my parents being in their 70's we probably would leave. I love my neighborhood in Queens but it has really changed in the last 10-15 years. I dont even know who my neighbors are anymore. 2 homes on my block have been knocked down and McMansions have been put up. Its really disgusting, Not only that but unless you have 700,000 grand your not buying a detached house anywhere around here. LI is no bargain either...the home prices may be lower but they kill you in taxes. We would have loved to move to Orange County but the commute would kill us and its still a little far from mom and pop. But we have already discussed that when we retire, well i have 13 years to go but, we are so out of here!

i grew up on li, but have been in brooklyn for the past 5 years and have NO intention of leaving (i actually did move to austin, tx for a few months for a temp. job and hated it - there's no place like ny!). figures i'd move to an area more expensive than li, but what can i say? i LOVE it here!

I will always love NY, but we moved to FL 2 yrs ago, and love it. Nothing compares to the weather, and how clean and beautiful and new everything is. You can get a brand new 3000 sq foot home for next to nothing here. NY is just completely unaffordable, unless you make loot. Plus, what is a 2 hr flight? There are so many specials on Jet blue and southwest, that FH and I come home whenever we want.

there is no place like LI or NYC area..but when you think about living somewhere else where it is actually affordable and stuf to do and a better life for your kids NY doesnt sound to great anymore

we considered moving back to LI ( i grew up there DH here is KS)

we jsut bought a house here in wichita and it price here is crazy cheap.DH has a NY salary though so we really have it made here

my friends mom works in one of the high schools here in town and she enrolled over 30 kids from LI last year..so aot of NY people are following the yellow brick road..haha

our house that is a little over 2000sqft and has half acre of property was under $110,000 with taxes under $1k

but DH makes almsot $3,500 a week so we are kings over here

i can stay home and do that whole thing and then travel whenever we want to see our family.its awesome..

PS - The cost of Weddings alone is ASTRONOMICAL HERE! It is mind boggling to many people how much we are spending

PSS - One day LI is going to be all old people or all rich people or a mixture of both. It is ridiculous that it is so expensive.

PSSS - Also to all of the teachers out there....my friend did a study and yes you rank as highest paid in the country....BUT you rank low when you compare it to cost of living here! RIDIC. My sister is a teacher and moved to NC and had her salary cut by 40%. But she and her FH are buying their first home...brand new house, fully upgraded, 2500 sq ft, $225,000! CRAZY! It was cost triple that here!

I want us to move back after FH is done with his residency. I love it here, it's just so expensive... we need to save a ton before we can move back and afford a nice house. I honestly don't know what will happen though, I may love it in Charleston and want to stay there! We'll see...

I never thought I wanted to move off the LI either. About a year ago FH got a job with the FAA and he was relocated to Leesburg, VA. We were sooo upset about it. I got a teaching job there and moved down in the summer. And honestly, we both love it. Yes, our family is on LI, but it is fun to go home and visit, and we love when they come to visit us. We don't live on a farm...and there aren't cows anywhere around here. Actually, Forbes just ranked the county that we live in now the 2nd richest county in the United States. My salary as a teacher is comparable to what I would have made in NY. Classes are smaller and the kids are MUCH more respectful. We are currently looking for our first house. You really do get more for your money here. FH loves his job...so honestly, we love being in Virginia and aren't sure we would really want to move back to LI. I never thought I would say that...ever.
