Spinoff - Do you want to stay on LI? Can you stay?

Original post by madseason

Ive been thinking about this more and more. I like living on LI - FH and I are trying to keep us here...

I here daily to get out of LI! My friend lives in Broadway VA, and when she heard what my rent was here she said its 2x her mortgage. But she lives in farmland - theres tractor crossing signs there when i went for her wedding and while it was relaxing - its not for me.

Do you want to stay on LI? I really want to!

PS - The cost of Weddings alone is ASTRONOMICAL HERE! It is mind boggling to many people how much we are spending

PSS - One day LI is going to be all old people or all rich people or a mixture of both. It is ridiculous that it is so expensive.

PSSS - Also to all of the teachers out there....my friend did a study and yes you rank as highest paid in the country....BUT you rank low when you compare it to cost of living here! RIDIC. My sister is a teacher and moved to NC and had her salary cut by 40%. But she and her FH are buying their first home...brand new house, fully upgraded, 2500 sq ft, $225,000! CRAZY! It was cost triple that here!

Here is a pic of here house...not landscaped yet but hoping to inspire those who are considering leaving!

We can afford to live here but would rather not. FH job moves him around often so we wont be here for long and we are both happy!

For those of you that have never lived anywhere but LI, I suggest getting out. Otherwise you will never know what else it out there. That is the prob with this area...people dont ever leave and they think this is the best place on earth and its really not.

Background info...I moved to Vegas for 1.5 years and it was awesome...best decision of my life. It opened my eyes that there are better places to live than here. GREAT WEATHER, little-to-no traffic, cheap housing....my rent was $400/month and I lived in a gated community! FH has lived in AZ, CA, UT and they are all amazing places too!

I also had the chance to live in Maryland and London which were both great places. But I do adapt easily to new environments.

To recap...some people love it here and thats fine....but I think it is wise to get out....you have nothing to lose and can always come back!!!!!

One more note...I too want to be a stay at home mom and it would be very hard to afford it here and own a house....unless FH makes $500,000+++!!!

fh wants to move to vegas and he is very serious.

I wouldn't mind moving, but i would move back once we have kids. I have one big issue though. If my parents weren't separated it would be easier. Its hard enough now leaving my mom who lives by herself. FOr anyone who doesnt have to deal with this, they dont understand how hard this is. I told fh i want to move to coconut grove for a year or two but another big problem is fh's job, i dont want him to leave, i think it would be stupid for him to do so. They love him and he has so much potential at his job.

I know some ppl think some of us are afraid but there are other circumstances, i would not tell fh to lose a great job and leaving my mom is hard when shes alone.

it's similar for us; fh is an only child (um, aka spoiled mama's boy) and his dad died three years ago. He will never leave his mom. I like my FMIL though and once we have a kid i know she'll want to take care of it, at least part time, which is good because my mom just can't, and I'd rather have family watching our kid.

I never realized that alot of the girls my age really love it here! I guess its what i hear alot from the older crowd like moms and aunts and work folk who feel that theres no future for us here - but with such a drive to stay...

plus you earn more here than other places, esp teachers..

Im feelin the LI/NYC love here

I do love it, when i go elsewhere i always think 'would i be able to live here' and i cant well except with miami florida, i really considered it and definitely can live there. Actually before many other states in the US, theres quite a few countries in europe i'd love to live in. But its hard to beat NYC, its a great city. If i did move, i'd come back at some point

LOVE VEGAS...but dont know if I would raise a family there. Also people are so flaky! It was hard to make friends! BUT overall I would still chose Vegas over NY any day.

The funny thing is though that there are affordable places outside of LI that are probably almost closer to the city and that stuff then on LI. yes queens and Manhattan have a totally different feel and draw. You can walk places and take public transportation...so if you are into that it's totally different. LI is a suburb, you still need cars and depending where you live the train could take you at least an hour to get into the city anyway. Where I am from in PA it's like an hour and a half outside of manhattan....it's almost the same as parts of suffolk....that's where my dilemma is....

well i live in queens lol. But yeah we go to fh's house in pa and takes us an hour and a half. Transportation is HUGE for us but thats bc of work. My commute is long now and i hate it, fh wouldnt even deal with it

I totally think transportation is great. Here it drives me nuts to worry about who's driving when we go out if we want drinks...my sister lives in Manyunk (like a hoboken to philadelphia) and it's so easy to take a cab that i get jealous!

What about the heat?? I heard you can barley walk outside during the day. Thats what FH told me...he goes every year...WITHOUT me!

Re: Spinoff - Do you want to stay on LI? Can you stay?

FH and I both grew up in Astoria and both our families moved out to the island.

I gradually did the move to LI though.... first i lived in Little Neck, and then when i was 17 we moved close to Oyster Bay..... I consider Little Neck the long island of queens..... but it def was not as secluded as where I am now...

FH and I love Astoria though.... we have friends and family there so we are there all the time.... it is funny reading through the posts b/c FH and I considered moving back to Astoria and then one day we were driving around for like 1 hour looking for a parking spot and FH said, the only way he would come back is if we get a garage

Funny, b/c even though i have not lived in queens for a while, it is so true, you can not take the queens out of the girl!!!! Anyone I talk to always tells me that I so do not belong in queens, and when i tell them i grew up in Astoria they always say 'ohhh now that makes sense!'

ETA: We are hoping to stay on LI.... not going past nassau county though.... we want our kids to go to Astoria and NYC and get to enjoy all that we have at our finger tips!

No it really isnt bad there. People that go there to visit complain about the heat because they are tourists and going hotel to hotel....or laying by the pool in 110 degrees!

Most homes/apt have garages or covered parking and besides the walk to the car....you are ok because you are in AC all day. BUT leave your car in the sun....you are going to melt alive! I definitely had panic attacks in my hot car and burnt my fingers on the steering wheel a few times!

PS - it is a dry heat but its still HOT! ***** the life out of u. But I would compare it to 100 degrees in 85% humidity. I went to Miami in August and almost melted!

lol i never take cabs into the city though, well rarely hahaha. I usually drive, i would say 95% of the time. I dont really drink so its easy for me.

I am all about leaving the area. I live in NJ but lived in Brooklyn and the Bronx for many years. The cost of living is ridiculous. I told FH that if he wants to stay here there will be some things we have to face now so we don't get our hopes up.

like.....
we can't affod that mustang

we have to drive our cars another 5 years

savings comes first, everything else comes second

If we have kids, I have to work. We cannot afford to live on 1 income. I refuse to go into serious debt for the sake of being parents.

Don't get me wrong, FH is not alittle kid and can handle his own finances. However, if I left it up to him he would try to make everything work and we would be juggling CC and our savings for years. I can't let that happen.
