Spinoff - Do you want to stay on LI? Can you stay?

Ive been thinking about this more and more. I like living on LI - FH and I are trying to keep us here...

I here daily to get out of LI! My friend lives in Broadway VA, and when she heard what my rent was here she said its 2x her mortgage. But she lives in farmland - theres tractor crossing signs there when i went for her wedding and while it was relaxing - its not for me.

Do you want to stay on LI? I really want to!

He is in mortgages, so I see all of this land and beautiful house for so cheap elsewhere---but I refuse to move--my whole family is here

Family is basically why we wouldn't do it. It's sad to go somewhere and not have anyone...guess we're just no pioneers like that.

ditto... its the security of knowing LI is where ppl klno y ou have been forever and will remain (more for FH)
for me, my family is all over but i cant go far from my parents.. LI is just far enough.

I never thought I wanted to move off the LI either. About a year ago FH got a job with the FAA and he was relocated to Leesburg, VA. We were sooo upset about it. I got a teaching job there and moved down in the summer. And honestly, we both love it. Yes, our family is on LI, but it is fun to go home and visit, and we love when they come to visit us. We don't live on a farm...and there aren't cows anywhere around here. Actually, Forbes just ranked the county that we live in now the 2nd richest county in the United States. My salary as a teacher is comparable to what I would have made in NY. Classes are smaller and the kids are MUCH more respectful. We are currently looking for our first house. You really do get more for your money here. FH loves his job...so honestly, we love being in Virginia and aren't sure we would really want to move back to LI. I never thought I would say that...ever.

Wow! Small world...one of my BM's who grew up in NY now lives in Leesburg with her husband, and 2 kids.

As to the question on this post..I have always wanted to move further south but we decided that since both of our families are here on LI we just couldn't leave. We just bought a house so we will be staying here for a long time to come!

That's a hot topic for my FH and I as well. I love Long Island and my family is here. I feel like if I leave I'll have noone. I'm sure we'll make friends but it's nothing like having family. All my sisters are close in age and I feel like I would be missing out on everything. We started to look for homes on Long Island but I know it's just wishful thinking. Noone wants us to rent because they say it's a waste of money but then again I don't want to buy a home and stuggle to make ends meet. I don't know what we are going to do. I always tell my fiance that if he can find me a town that looks like the same town and has the same street at Father of the Bride then I'll move but until then this is my home.

I actually would love to get out of NY all together but unfortunately FH (who is also the bread winner) has a job in LI that he loves so we'll have to stay in ny. Right now we're in queens but we're looking to move to LI, nassau or suffok doesn't really matter to me but FH prefers nassau.

Coming from Queens, Suffolk is a completely different world! It's beautiful, but not for me!

I'll be moving to Suffolks from Queens..and like I stated earlier on this post there is some culture shock..though now I'm more used to it. It's defintiely beautiful in the summer

FH and I are planning on staying in NY for the next year, at the very least. We want to move out of state because it's just too expensive and we can not live the lifestyle we want. Besides, in my opinion, NY is no place to try and raise a family any longer.

There is nothing like NY. I think I would miss it to much. Not to mention ALL of both our families are here.

Actually with in the next couple of years is the time to buy. We are supposed to get to house prices like they were in the 90's soon. The interest rates are even way down and will probably go up after the election in November.
