Spinoff - Do you want to stay on LI? Can you stay?

Original post by madseason

Ive been thinking about this more and more. I like living on LI - FH and I are trying to keep us here...

I here daily to get out of LI! My friend lives in Broadway VA, and when she heard what my rent was here she said its 2x her mortgage. But she lives in farmland - theres tractor crossing signs there when i went for her wedding and while it was relaxing - its not for me.

Do you want to stay on LI? I really want to!

i am staying in nyc. I know its cheaper elsewhere but along with the cost of a home i consider it also paying for your surroundings. For someone who does like a more quiet relaxed back lifestyle it is perfect for them. BUt its just not for me. So although its less in other states i wouldn't be happy and just couldn't do it. I dont want to move somewhere else based JUST on prices of homes and not like anything else.

I love NYC, i love the lifestyle. I love having so many places to go to, restaurants, lounges, bars, stores. I also love the diversity and one thing that is important to me is my kids growing up with many different cultures, and where else but nyc. Plus i want to stay close to our families, who else will babysit my kids but no i do want our parents to be a big part of our kids lives.

Thats soooooo true Denise - theres a culture here - all over LI and the City - and its so diverse - I dont know how i would be with out it - theres so much exposure to so many different things. I love it here.

Diverse??? Yes it is but it minus well not be L.I. is one of the most segregated places to live. People stay with their own kind and its really sad. Im in freaking Texas (which I had assumed so much about before I got here but I got a rude awakening) and its crazy how down here its less segreagted then in NY. My neighborhood is truly diverse, everyone is friends with everyone. In NY I never saw that.

And for people that think moving from NY will be boring...Im having more fun here than I ever did in NY. If owning a home on LI means I cant do anything fun, and enjoy life because Im always cash poor than I rather not. Lifes to short.

my moms neighborhood is more diverse than where we live in staten island....im guessing that my family is the 'italian' family on her block now on her block i know there are white people - but an italian or jewish family from NY stands out among them (my parents being the italians) , there is a black family lives right next door and there is a spanish family too and thats just on her block - so thats three diff ethnic groups right there - in my neighborhood now in staten island and on our old bock its all white and only white - the neighborhoods are much more segregated and its true that people are racist and dont want other people coming into their neighborhood b/c it will bring down the value sad but true - so leaving that mentality will be nice!

yeah staten island is a bit like that

So it L.I.

I know, i actually wrote that a few posts back agreeing with your post that its not diversified

It certainly isn't easy to make it on LI and have anything left for savings, etc.

If my entire family weren't in NY, I'd move in a second.

yeah certain neighborhoods are like that, not everyone is like that but the people who ARE like that dont hide it - get this - there are even some people in my family who will say certain areas are 'bad neighborhoods' just because its not all white italian families....its like ***?!?!?! like they wont go to a certain store because its not on the south shore of staten island! and the neighborhoods they are talking about arent bad neighborhoods at all....people are ridiculous....FHs family is different thankgod - must be another reason i like them better

oh trust me i know exactly what you mean lol

about your last line. Well fh has lived in queens all his life, infact hes only lived in astoria. He got lucky bc his house has a garage and a driveway with 2 parking spots. But i was laughing bc JUST yesterday he was like OMG i cant believe how far we parked when we got to my house yesterday and he was pissed his favorite parking spots were gone. I was like W** we parked maybe half a block away, its very close. Then i realized that hes never had to look for parking at his house so he is spoiled by that. Meanwhile i grew up 2 blocks away from fh in astoria(now i live in kew gardens though) and i had the worst situation for parking and always was such a pain. Alternate side parking ive had to park 3-4 blocks away at times and im ok with this but others think its crazy

I KNOW. i keep telling FH that when he moves in we should just get a garage, b/c he's the one that always has to look for parking. It's not terrible where I am but of course i got one of the few co-ops with no garage. the worst is on a weekend night when we get home late; then i feel bad if he has to move it.

meanwhile, growing up my dad and aunt used to circle for literally an hour before finding a spot; now whenever my sisters and bro in laws comes to my place they complain just because they have to 'look' for parking! I'm like, you guys forgot where we grew up!!

Re: Spinoff - Do you want to stay on LI? Can you stay?

we talked about it...we thought we wouldn't mind like a nc/fl lifestyle...but we're staying in li

our jobs are really based here

but more importantly...fmil is widowed and fh is really the one that holds the family together so i dont think we would move out of li for that reason.

im originally from north jersey and my family is in the tri state area...so im fine with li....i like driving in li much better than in jersey anyway.

its just slightly frustrating cuz the prices here are so much higher...but i think we would both miss it...especially being so close to nyc.

We know we are going to have trouble affording to stay but we want to be either in NYC or California

i would love love to move to california. i told fh when he was stationed in san diego that i would move out there and go to school there and everything.

but fh said NO because well he was stationed out there for 3 yrs so he of course didnt like it

but i am sure we will stay on LI , Fh has a pretty good chance of getting called for Suffolk Police once he gets back from Iraq (veteran points help his score thankfully lol) so if he gets that job we are staying!! which i like i dont want to move far from my family- unless it is san deigo haha

come to san diego!

it's fantastic here

but the housing market is definitely not cheaper!

oohh I would LOVE to I wish FH felt the same way. but being stationed at Camp Pendleton for 3 yrs he hates it now haha. But yeah the market is definitely not cheaper haha

Re: Spinoff - Do you want to stay on LI? Can you stay?

I'd move away in a second. I'm from PA and it's so hard for me to see the big beautiful homes and land that I could have there for what I can afford here. Plus I grew up with my mom able to stay home with us and go on class field trips and stuff and I worry that the only way to afford something is for both parents to work. I totally not into that. People say about culture but I think things change alot when you have kids and your priorities change. The restaurants around won't be as importnat cause kids want friendlys and fridays....I can honestly say that I haven't been to a museum since i've lived here. I don't know to me having a nice large yard and a big house is more important. This is the biggest fight FH and I have. He wants to stay and i want to go....for now he wins...when we have kids we'll see...

nifheim Posted:

Re: Spinoff - Do you want to stay on LI? Can you stay?

I don't care where i live as long as people don't use their yards as a trash bin and pick up after themselves and care for their homes. Oh and people have front doors on their houses in the summer.

In all honestly I doubt we will stay here no way we could ever afford it long term. Even though I went to college and most of my friends went to college there are limited jobs for our fields left here. Its either try to find a job elsewhere or do a diff. career which would require more schooling and more debt. My parents are thinking of renting the house to tom and i and we would sublet an apartment in the house. My own boss at a college has half his house rented to afford to live here.

Texas is great. All of my mom's family is from San Antonio. It is so much different elsewhere. I think so many people here are afraid to live the little bubble that has sheltered them for so long. Once you leave, you realize that there is a bigger world out there that has so much to offer.

I love San Antonio. Its sooo nice!!! I totally agree with you. Im from the Bronx and lived in the same house since I was born. I NEVER went to Long Island and grew up thinking thats where all the 'rich people' live. It was like a distant land. Then I went to Hofstra for college and discovered LI. It changed my life!!! Sounds corney and stupid but it really did. LI is a half hour from my house in the BX but before I went to college you would have thought it was another country. Same thing with Texas and any other place you go...you will find that its not as bad as you think. Everyplace has a downtown that is full of life and fun. People are so used to what they know they assume everything else wont be fun.

I totally agree with you. I feel like on LI people never really went anywhere else...a lot stay here for college and then live at home and don't see there is a big world out there...everything is scary but people move every day. I feel like no matter where you end up you adapt and make it home. It's just hard to take the plunge....PS...i went to hofstra too from PA and it was totally a different world..

We can afford to live here and we own a house....but would rather not be here! FH job moves him around often so we wont be here for long and we are both happy!

For those of you that have never lived anywhere but LI, I suggest getting out. Otherwise you will never know what else it out there. That is the prob with this area...people dont ever leave and they think this is the best place on earth and its really not.

Background info...I moved to Vegas for 1.5 years and it was awesome...best decision of my life. It opened my eyes that there are better places to live than here. GREAT WEATHER, little-to-no traffic, cheap housing....my rent was $400/month and I lived in a gated community! FH has lived in AZ, CA, UT and they are all amazing places too!

I also had the chance to live in Maryland and London which were both great places. But I do adapt easily to new environments.

To recap...some people love it here and thats fine....but I think it is wise to get out....you have nothing to lose and can always come back!!!!!

One more note...I too want to be a stay at home mom and it would be very hard to afford it here and own a house....unless FH makes $500,000+++!!!

yeah where i live now its not that bad. Fh has his favorite parking spots but if he has to park just a little bit further he complains. The spot was even on the same block as my building lol. Its something he is going to have to get used to also.

I Like Long Island and Ive been here my whole life - But it is really hard to keep up with everything especially while everything keeps going up in price!! My FH and I talk about going to Southern CA sometimes - who knows... We live on the East End of LI, it is a LOT Cheaper here - If anyone would like a suggestion for apartments or nice areas out here, Send me an FM!!

YEAH the restaurants are for me and fh lol not the kids. I went to museums as a kid and love it but even i didnt go as much, i definitely would want my kids to have more knowledge of the arts, go to broadway shows(i went to alot of shows and love it) and so on.

I think its all based on an individual basis though, everyone is different so whats good for one person isn't for another. FH and i love going out to eat. We used to go so much and have cut down bc of the wedding. But we were just saying how after the wedding we are going back to our old routine of going to restaurants more often. We even said we have to go to buddakan at least once a month ...also for me when i said culture i meant i want my kids to grow up with people from many different backgrounds and religions

fh wants to move to vegas and he is very serious.

I wouldn't mind moving, but i would move back once we have kids. I have one big issue though. If my parents weren't separated it would be easier. Its hard enough now leaving my mom who lives by herself. FOr anyone who doesnt have to deal with this, they dont understand how hard this is. I told fh i want to move to coconut grove for a year or two but another big problem is fh's job, i dont want him to leave, i think it would be stupid for him to do so. They love him and he has so much potential at his job.

I know some ppl think some of us are afraid but there are other circumstances, i would not tell fh to lose a great job and leaving my mom is hard when shes alone.

Re: Spinoff - Do you want to stay on LI? Can you stay?

The funny thing is though that there are affordable places outside of LI that are probably almost closer to the city and that stuff then on LI. yes queens and Manhattan have a totally different feel and draw. You can walk places and take public transportation...so if you are into that it's totally different. LI is a suburb, you still need cars and depending where you live the train could take you at least an hour to get into the city anyway. Where I am from in PA it's like an hour and a half outside of manhattan....it's almost the same as parts of suffolk....that's where my dilemma is....

i totally agree - besides the fact that i love queens LOL my parents are older and we have a TON of nieces and nephews. . .so that is the main reason

basically i know that if i moved away i would have to move back in a few years to help out my parents so good thing i like it here!

I never realized that alot of the girls my age really love it here! I guess its what i hear alot from the older crowd like moms and aunts and work folk who feel that theres no future for us here - but with such a drive to stay...

plus you earn more here than other places, esp teachers..

Im feelin the LI/NYC love here

LOVE VEGAS...but dont know if I would raise a family there. Also people are so flaky! It was hard to make friends! BUT overall I would still chose Vegas over NY any day.
