Spinoff - Do you want to stay on LI? Can you stay?

Original post by madseason

Ive been thinking about this more and more. I like living on LI - FH and I are trying to keep us here...

I here daily to get out of LI! My friend lives in Broadway VA, and when she heard what my rent was here she said its 2x her mortgage. But she lives in farmland - theres tractor crossing signs there when i went for her wedding and while it was relaxing - its not for me.

Do you want to stay on LI? I really want to!

We're staying. For us, there were very few reasons to leave and many more to stay. I'm sure there are other places that we could be happy, but this little sandbar has always been my home. And it always will be.

I'm a Queens girl and I love it. FH's family moved to LI 9 years ago from Queens. But he's just over the border of Nassau. I'll be moving to Nassau soon I'll miss living in Queens.

I just said that in my prior post to some degree...guess you can take the girl out of queens but not Queens outta the girl

a bunch of you girls know that i wont even leave my neighborhood much less my borough!

jk to an extent but we will be living in Queens or MAYBE MAYBE MAYBE Nassau as close to Queens as possible ( but hopefully just Queens )

Ideally we will be living in Howard Beach or the surrounding areas. . .even if that means giving up my dream of owning a home and getting a condo

yes, i am THAT serious about my borough pride
DH is WORSE than me

I like LI but I dont LOVE it. WAY TOO MANY PEOPLE AND NOT ENOUGH ROOM FOR THEM!!! If it was up to me i'd be in Southern California in a heart beat. But FH makes a lot more than I do, hes in line to take over the company he works for, and he doesn't want to leave behind our families. So it looks like we'll be here..

Tilde...love your Queens pride

I grew up in South Richmond Hill and went to John Adams HS so I know Howard Beach fairly well...it's a beautiful neighborhood There are still some reasonably priced co-op's in Howard Beach from what I've heard.

i am staying in nyc. I know its cheaper elsewhere but along with the cost of a home i consider it also paying for your surroundings. For someone who does like a more quiet relaxed back lifestyle it is perfect for them. BUt its just not for me. So although its less in other states i wouldn't be happy and just couldn't do it. I dont want to move somewhere else based JUST on prices of homes and not like anything else.

I love NYC, i love the lifestyle. I love having so many places to go to, restaurants, lounges, bars, stores. I also love the diversity and one thing that is important to me is my kids growing up with many different cultures, and where else but nyc. Plus i want to stay close to our families, who else will babysit my kids but no i do want our parents to be a big part of our kids lives.

Thats soooooo true Denise - theres a culture here - all over LI and the City - and its so diverse - I dont know how i would be with out it - theres so much exposure to so many different things. I love it here.

Diverse??? Yes it is but it minus well not be L.I. is one of the most segregated places to live. People stay with their own kind and its really sad. Im in freaking Texas (which I had assumed so much about before I got here but I got a rude awakening) and its crazy how down here its less segreagted then in NY. My neighborhood is truly diverse, everyone is friends with everyone. In NY I never saw that.

And for people that think moving from NY will be boring...Im having more fun here than I ever did in NY. If owning a home on LI means I cant do anything fun, and enjoy life because Im always cash poor than I rather not. Lifes to short.

Anyone else looking to move northward (New England)? I love the winters there (they actually get snow!).

Maybe after I have about 15 years here I'll move. I just need to figure out how I can afford a home. I hate renting.

Texas is great. All of my mom's family is from San Antonio. It is so much different elsewhere. I think so many people here are afraid to live the little bubble that has sheltered them for so long. Once you leave, you realize that there is a bigger world out there that has so much to offer.

We know we are going to have trouble affording to stay but we want to be either in NYC or California

i would love love to move to california. i told fh when he was stationed in san diego that i would move out there and go to school there and everything.

but fh said NO because well he was stationed out there for 3 yrs so he of course didnt like it

but i am sure we will stay on LI , Fh has a pretty good chance of getting called for Suffolk Police once he gets back from Iraq (veteran points help his score thankfully lol) so if he gets that job we are staying!! which i like i dont want to move far from my family- unless it is san deigo haha

come to san diego!

it's fantastic here

but the housing market is definitely not cheaper!

my moms neighborhood is more diverse than where we live in staten island....im guessing that my family is the 'italian' family on her block now on her block i know there are white people - but an italian or jewish family from NY stands out among them (my parents being the italians) , there is a black family lives right next door and there is a spanish family too and thats just on her block - so thats three diff ethnic groups right there - in my neighborhood now in staten island and on our old bock its all white and only white - the neighborhoods are much more segregated and its true that people are racist and dont want other people coming into their neighborhood b/c it will bring down the value sad but true - so leaving that mentality will be nice!

I love San Antonio. Its sooo nice!!! I totally agree with you. Im from the Bronx and lived in the same house since I was born. I NEVER went to Long Island and grew up thinking thats where all the 'rich people' live. It was like a distant land. Then I went to Hofstra for college and discovered LI. It changed my life!!! Sounds corney and stupid but it really did. LI is a half hour from my house in the BX but before I went to college you would have thought it was another country. Same thing with Texas and any other place you go...you will find that its not as bad as you think. Everyplace has a downtown that is full of life and fun. People are so used to what they know they assume everything else wont be fun.

I AGREE, and its what i told FH that i noticed. Alot of LI neighborhoods you know what a majority of the ppl are. Some are predominantly jewish, italian, irish and so on.

also texas is a big state with big cities so i think those of us who said nothing to do was referring to smaller towns.

lol i dont think its about living in a bubble. If i lived elsewhere such as a small city then i would move to a big city in a heartbeat. But its hard to move out of nyc for ME considering i dont like it elsewhere. I dont love nyc bc i live in a bubble, i love it for all that it offers. Infact my fear is living in a bubble if i move elsewhere(NOT every state this applies to but some)

i agree. i definitely don't think living in NY means living in a bubble; I usually feel that way about other people who come to visit NY and think it's a scary strange place. BUT I also agree that LI isn't that diverse... it's more the boroughs that are, like queens brooklyn and the bronx. Staten Island is a little more suburban and a lot like LI in that way - my sister lives there and I live in Queens and it's totally different. I think a big distinction is do you have to circle around and look for parking and parallel park, or can you park right outside your front door no problem

yeah certain neighborhoods are like that, not everyone is like that but the people who ARE like that dont hide it - get this - there are even some people in my family who will say certain areas are 'bad neighborhoods' just because its not all white italian families....its like ***?!?!?! like they wont go to a certain store because its not on the south shore of staten island! and the neighborhoods they are talking about arent bad neighborhoods at all....people are ridiculous....FHs family is different thankgod - must be another reason i like them better

Lifes to short.

my moms neighborhood is more diverse than where we live in staten island....im guessing that my family is the 'italian' family on her block now on her block i know there are white people - but an italian or jewish family from NY stands out among them (my parents being the italians) , there is a black family lives right next door and there is a spanish family too and thats just on her block - so thats three diff ethnic groups right there - in my neighborhood now in staten island and on our old bock its all white and only white - the neighborhoods are much more segregated and its true that people are racist and dont want other people coming into their neighborhood b/c it will bring down the value sad but true - so leaving that mentality will be nice!

yeah staten island is a bit like that

So it L.I.

Texas is great. All of my mom's family is from San Antonio. It is so much different elsewhere. I think so many people here are afraid to live the little bubble that has sheltered them for so long. Once you leave, you realize that there is a bigger world out there that has so much to offer.

lol i dont think its about living in a bubble.

I think a big distinction is do you have to circle around and look for parking and parallel park, or can you park right outside your front door no problem

about your last line. Well fh has lived in queens all his life, infact hes only lived in astoria. He got lucky bc his house has a garage and a driveway with 2 parking spots. But i was laughing bc JUST yesterday he was like OMG i cant believe how far we parked when we got to my house yesterday and he was pissed his favorite parking spots were gone. I was like W** we parked maybe half a block away, its very close. Then i realized that hes never had to look for parking at his house so he is spoiled by that. Meanwhile i grew up 2 blocks away from fh in astoria(now i live in kew gardens though) and i had the worst situation for parking and always was such a pain. Alternate side parking ive had to park 3-4 blocks away at times and im ok with this but others think its crazy
