Spinoff - Do you want to stay on LI? Can you stay?

Original post by madseason

Ive been thinking about this more and more. I like living on LI - FH and I are trying to keep us here...

I here daily to get out of LI! My friend lives in Broadway VA, and when she heard what my rent was here she said its 2x her mortgage. But she lives in farmland - theres tractor crossing signs there when i went for her wedding and while it was relaxing - its not for me.

Do you want to stay on LI? I really want to!

I'd love to move, but FH's business is here so we're stuck.

i am staying in nyc. I know its cheaper elsewhere but along with the cost of a home i consider it also paying for your surroundings. For someone who does like a more quiet relaxed back lifestyle it is perfect for them. BUt its just not for me. So although its less in other states i wouldn't be happy and just couldn't do it. I dont want to move somewhere else based JUST on prices of homes and not like anything else.

I love NYC, i love the lifestyle. I love having so many places to go to, restaurants, lounges, bars, stores. I also love the diversity and one thing that is important to me is my kids growing up with many different cultures, and where else but nyc. Plus i want to stay close to our families, who else will babysit my kids but no i do want our parents to be a big part of our kids lives.

Thats soooooo true Denise - theres a culture here - all over LI and the City - and its so diverse - I dont know how i would be with out it - theres so much exposure to so many different things. I love it here.

this is my biggest concern about moving - im convinced that the culutre and people are different the further and further you get away from the city - ive even to places and jersey and felt like i was 100s of miles away from home - i think the culture shock is what we are dreading the most.....like my dad says there are no museums like the ones in NYC or libraries like the ones in NYC no theater, things like that....FH sees it as a trade off though - we'll have orlando and all the parks, going to the movies is half the price, there is the space station, the beach all year round.....so i guess you you lose things and gain some

florida is more diversified than other states though. Florida and vegas are 2 places fh said he would consider moving to. His company has headquarters in both those states so he can always transfer, although i always tell him he would still have to prove himself in a way bc these are new people he'd work with. We both love coconut grove and talked about it while we were there both times we went but if we did it would just be a temporary thing for like a year just for a change, or maybe one day we can just get a summer home there hahaha would be nice.

There is even some culture shock involved for me moving from Queens to LI. Maybe that sounds odd but it's true.

I'm more of a city person than FH is and while I do like it out there...I will always be from Queens.

You're right...where else can you find everything you find in the NYC metro area. Even once I move to LI I'm just a train ride away from the city.

yeah, i want to take my kids to lots of museums, and have them learn about art, history, science and so on. I grew up in queens and still live in queens and grew up in a neighborhood that is very diversified. MY hs was in the papers for having the most countries in a school. I think it helps kids to learn about other cultures and be surrounded by that..

Another HUGE thing is FH's job. I dont want him to leave that, hes been there for a while and he has already established himself and proved himself there. His bosses all love him and they are always promoting him and gearing him towards the highest level, so would be bad to leave that

This is so true! I agree completely!

I'm a Queens girl and I love it. FH's family moved to LI 9 years ago from Queens. But he's just over the border of Nassau. I'll be moving to Nassau soon I'll miss living in Queens.

I just said that in my prior post to some degree...guess you can take the girl out of queens but not Queens outta the girl

And a few years ago moved to kew gardens and that wasnt easy at first i love it now, plus i am still in astoria all the time, fh still lives there

I have ALWAYS lived in Queens. I've never moved. I feel like I will be stranded in Nassau without my public transportation right there. I mean when we have snow, the subways are always running, but LIRR gets delayed. I dont' want to deal! But I am getting a nice house, good school district, great neighborhood, etc. Where I live now my zoned HS is terrible. It actually doesn't exist anymore!

oh i agree and completely understand. It is different, not in a bad way just different. I like LI but i guess its just getting used to where you grew up, the same way i am sure some LI people would find it hard living in queens or brooklyn at first.

We have talked about this too, but agreed that as long as our parents are around we're not going anywhere. I want them to be part of our childrens' lives as much as possible so I couldn't imagine moving away from them. Further on down the road I would def be open to it but not anytime soon.

FH is a LI boy...like all LI. He likes Queens and the city some times...but rather be on LI.

I told him when we have kids I'm bringing them to Queens and the city often and we're riding the subway..don't want them to be sheltered and only know the LIRR or their car.

Re: Spinoff - Do you want to stay on LI? Can you stay?

its crazy b/c my parents and grandparents are in florida and of course i miss them but im used to it and im kind of a loner- so it doesnt really bother me of affect me - i think ill be more sad to move and leave FHs family - im worried about him, i think im a stronger person than he is when it comes to that kind of stuff - i think he'll miss his parents and sister more than he thinks - he has a diff relationship with his parents than i did (FHs family is like a brady bunch family vs mine is totally disfunctional) so i think it will be hard on him......his parents want to move to florida too though - but his sisters husband wants to stay here - so his parents are in a rough spot....they say they will get two homes so they can spend time with both of us - but who knows what will happen - i feel the worst for them - unlike my parents they cant bear the thought of being seperated from their kids my parents didnt give a f---

Yes we are staying on LI
We have a house already and its being redone, so it will be our forever home.
its 4 beds 3.5 baths so it has plenty of room for growth

ETA: If FH got an amazing opportunity somewhere, we would 100% go somewhere else to live.
Right now all his business is in this area.
but he does have alot of out of state clients as well.

i would love love to move to california. i told fh when he was stationed in san diego that i would move out there and go to school there and everything.

but fh said NO because well he was stationed out there for 3 yrs so he of course didnt like it

but i am sure we will stay on LI , Fh has a pretty good chance of getting called for Suffolk Police once he gets back from Iraq (veteran points help his score thankfully lol) so if he gets that job we are staying!! which i like i dont want to move far from my family- unless it is san deigo haha
