Spinoff - Do you want to stay on LI? Can you stay?

Ive been thinking about this more and more. I like living on LI - FH and I are trying to keep us here...

I here daily to get out of LI! My friend lives in Broadway VA, and when she heard what my rent was here she said its 2x her mortgage. But she lives in farmland - theres tractor crossing signs there when i went for her wedding and while it was relaxing - its not for me.

Do you want to stay on LI? I really want to!

FH and I were discussing this last night.

Basically LI is not priced for couples starting out...and now it's even hard for established couples. FH and I combined make a decent living, but even as far out as he is (Farmingville) it's getting pricey and more crowded.

We can't leave because all of our ties are in the NYC metro area (LI, NJ, CT, 5 Boroughs).

He is in mortgages, so I see all of this land and beautiful house for so cheap elsewhere---but I refuse to move--my whole family is here

Definitley - i dont want to leave my family

we are wavering about the opposite question... moving back to ny. i'm out of state for law school and FH grew up in the city we currently live in. COL is way cheaper. all of my family is in NY.

i am staying in nyc. I know its cheaper elsewhere but along with the cost of a home i consider it also paying for your surroundings. For someone who does like a more quiet relaxed back lifestyle it is perfect for them. BUt its just not for me. So although its less in other states i wouldn't be happy and just couldn't do it. I dont want to move somewhere else based JUST on prices of homes and not like anything else.

I love NYC, i love the lifestyle. I love having so many places to go to, restaurants, lounges, bars, stores. I also love the diversity and one thing that is important to me is my kids growing up with many different cultures, and where else but nyc. Plus i want to stay close to our families, who else will babysit my kids but no i do want our parents to be a big part of our kids lives.

Family is basically why we wouldn't do it. It's sad to go somewhere and not have anyone...guess we're just no pioneers like that.

we want to leave b.c we cant live here comfortably.

We will only move if my family moves too..maybe in about a year.

You're right...where else can you find everything you find in the NYC metro area. Even once I move to LI I'm just a train ride away from the city I love it here.

It's just sad that it isn't as affordable to couples starting out like it used to be.

My parents bought their house in Queens and were able to do it well within the means of what they were making...now it's much tougher.

It would be nice to live comfortably and enjoy everything the city has to offer without it being such a struggle.

FH wants to move like the day after we are married. That is not happening. He wants to move out west (Vegas/Phoenix) and get a teaching job there starting Sept. 08 but thats impossible. We havent even looked for housing out there or jobs. He lives in a fantasy world

We are three months till the wedding and are still living at home with our parents.

I do know NY is very expensive and I know we cant afford a house here.

It will be very hard to leave our family, but we have to start ours and start our life together.

Plus we are sick of the cold weather.

Thats soooooo true Denise - theres a culture here - all over LI and the City - and its so diverse - I dont know how i would be with out it - theres so much exposure to so many different things. I love it here.

we live in staten island and i dont LOVE it but i am used to it - ive lived here for almost 20 years so its my home....

3 years ago my parents moved to florida and i was really upset at them. my grandparents are down there and since my parents couldnt afford NY anymore, especially with my dad retiring they decided it was time for them to move - i stayed here and got an apartment with FH.....when they moved i said that i would NEVER, EVER move to boring Florida...

when we finally went to see my parents and their house - that was it - FH was sold - he wanted to move my parents mortgage is our rent - less than1K and they have a huge home! 5 bedrooms, 3 full bathrooms, formal living room, dining room, kitchen, another family room, 3 car garage, inground pool, screenhouse, on a 1/4 acre new construction - its absolutely gorgeous! so we saved up and bought some property last december. we plan on going down there sometime after the wedding. FH can transfer his job and salary which is the biggest plus. right now we can afford a townhome on staten island but i really dont want to be stuck in a townhouse and worry about how we are going to afford kids one day - for us it doesnt make sense to do that when we can move to a place where our quality of like will be better....its cleaner, the stores are nicer, the people are nicer, and most of all our home will be nicer and we can sustain it on 1 income while up here we need two incomes....

im so excited about moving BUT im also terrified!!

i've gone back and forth with this. FH's best friends are all in PA or MD... for a while I was like we should move to PA... but he always says who are you kidding... 1. you're a city girl and 2. you can't move far from your family. I just hate the LI is so expensive.

the real question is where we will end up buying - in LI or NYC. He is an LI boy through and through but he likes queens too; I'm not a fan of LI (except the beach) even though most of my family lives there. I want to stay in queens but the houses are so much more $$$ and manhattan apts are ridiculous. But he is also willing to live in Queens if we can afford it, so we'll see what happens a few years down the road.

yeah, i want to take my kids to lots of museums, and have them learn about art, history, science and so on. I grew up in queens and still live in queens and grew up in a neighborhood that is very diversified. MY hs was in the papers for having the most countries in a school. I think it helps kids to learn about other cultures and be surrounded by that..

Another HUGE thing is FH's job. I dont want him to leave that, hes been there for a while and he has already established himself and proved himself there. His bosses all love him and they are always promoting him and gearing him towards the highest level, so would be bad to leave that

Agreed!! If my family and friends moved..so would I but that doesn't look like its happening... sooooo we suffer with prices!!!!

I play with the idea often, but teaching doesn't pay very well in other states, so I'm not sure if it is worth it. Both FH and I are teachers, so it's not like one salary would be lower; both of them would.

FH went to school in MA (BU) and I really love Massachusetts. I'd love to live in or around Salem. FH isn't in any rush to get back there.

Every time I look at our debt and what we make I shake my head. I can never afford a house here. FH still thinks we can. I think it will take a miracle.

I don't mind living far away from my family. FH minds moving away from his. It is going to take time for both of us to come to a decision about moving. The other factor is that I just got a tenure track position at my district and I make really good money. I would be a fool to throw it away and start new. FH has tenure and will have his masters degree this may. It would be silly of him to start over at lower pay as well.

So many things hold us here and I hate it. I don't want my children to be raised here. I don't want them to turn into deluded idiots like some of my students.

Sorry about the rant.

I always say I want to move but then reality sets in and I would never. I can't live to far away from my family. I think LI is far... And I want my kids to grow up in NYC. I think New yorkers are tougher then other parts of the country. Me and FH both want to raise our kids here. I think they will get a better education then anywhere else and I htink they will be more street smart. NY is a whole other culture. It's very different in other parts of the country.

this is my biggest concern about moving - im convinced that the culutre and people are different the further and further you get away from the city - ive even to places and jersey and felt like i was 100s of miles away from home - i think the culture shock is what we are dreading the most.....like my dad says there are no museums like the ones in NYC or libraries like the ones in NYC no theater, things like that....FH sees it as a trade off though - we'll have orlando and all the parks, going to the movies is half the price, there is the space station, the beach all year round.....so i guess you you lose things and gain some

I'm a Queens girl and I love it. FH's family moved to LI 9 years ago from Queens. But he's just over the border of Nassau. I'll be moving to Nassau soon I'll miss living in Queens.
