I never meant to imply that community college grads (I am one of them) are less educated or under-employed. My point was that money can buy you things, in most cases better things, but that lack of money doesn't mean you get nothing.

No it means your getting a lot less!

I disagree . . .
I went to SCCC, got a scholarship to Hofstra and now I am on scholarship to one of the best law schools in the country (Indiana Univ). I learned more in one day at SCCC then I did at Hofstra (notoriously known as being a school where you pay to pass!)
You get what you work for. People who blame Afirmative Action programs (which are almost always initiated by the school or employer voluntarily - not forcefuly by the state/gov't) IMO are people who are making excuses for their lot in life.

I don't think it is fair to say people are making excuses or not working hard enough. I know plenty of friends (minorities) who the minute the could work HAD TO WORK. To help their families. They had no choice, sometimes they worked 2 jobs to help out. All while going to HS/college. They don't have the luxury or should i say enough time in the day to work harder, study harder like the majority middle class teens. SO what should we say...to bad? Find the time? Forget you family, think of yourself and your future! This is the unfortunate environmental factor that they have to deal with that most of white teen do not have to deal with. I am not saying there aren't poor white people who don't have to deal with this situation too but the majority is minorities.

I think you misunderstood me Oct - I am 100% for affirmative action. I work at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Hmmmm...I always go back and forth on this subject. I do feel that there is a number of people that are at a disadvantage as far as schooling goes.. I do feel the majority of those people are minorities. Yes there are poor white people who grew up in these areas. And i understand Juliets issue. But the fact is she was, like she said the minority in that area. WHich means most of the people who live and went to school there were minorities. I do feel there are people that are at a huge disadvantage and do not have the luxuries that most white people have. Are there white people who have this issue...definately.
IMO...i feel that as the years go by more and more 'good' schools are becoming multiracial. SO i do have hope for the future. But it doesn't deny what still exists. I do feel that minorities are at a disadvantage and understand why there is affirmitive action. But i would also piss me off if i applied to a job or school that i was looked over because of a quota.

I just have to say that neither me nor the students who went to Harvard were poor, but the district has a lot of minorities. My comment is based on how the same financial and social status as well as the same education meant entirely two different things when a Hispanic last name was tacked onto the end of it.

If it was a matter of poor white or poor hispanic, that would have been different. This was like high-lower income/low-end of middle income families. Not struggling but not rolling in it and neither student was desperate for a break, but the Hispanic kid got it, because of his ethnic background.

I would think that most of the students at harvard weren't poor! I don't understand what you are saying. Did you mean Brentwood? I didn't mean to imply that you were poor. I understood you post. I was agreeing with you. WHich i guess didn't come out correctly

I meant the kids from Brentwood who went to Ivy League schools (Harvard as one of those)

I was just clarifying that none of us were poor, just came from different ethnic backgrounds and the 'minority' one got preferential treatment.

No wars, just thoughts.

Meg- I've often considered getting a job at the EEOC. Or becoming a Title VII atty.

Think about all the people in politics who are very successful- most of them come from families with lots of money and 'historical' backgrounds- I personally think that affirmitive action is trying to give that type of 'leg up' to minorities- they don't have that background...

this converstation is sad and weak. nobody will ever experience any type of minority situation until you lived it or become some else. last i check, we can't switch who we are. AA.....thats just a bunch of bull. i really don't believe in that system.

'We have to hire sombody for this important job. make sure you interview at least 2% black people or they will get upset'

my problem, many blacks are sterotyped as drug dealers, dropping out of school ... and many whites are looked as if they have nothing better to do then spend money and whatever... Well, either they did something right or the person before them did something right. Everybody has for the most part, most control of there life. go out and do somthing instead of complaining.

Now, if my comments got off track, i do aplogize. if i offending anyone, my aplozies again. i read a few post and this is what i came up with.

I don't really see anyone as complaining. I think we're all discusisng things, and it seems like you agree with us that there's something wrong with the system!

first off im sorry i said colored instead of african american, and sorry i said white instead of caucasian

yes i am am at hofstra now, but my parents couldnt afford it right away so i went to nassau community for two years first.which i found to be a great school at least equal to hofstra(and only $2,000 a year!)

In regards to the stereotyped as drug dealers... me personally i think most people think the drug dealer not because of the skin color but when they see the baggy rapper clothing, the slang 'yo, yo whats going on up in the crib' talk, and such... there are caucasian people who act the SAME way and i get freaked out then also!... for me its the way people present themselves for whether i feel comfortable around them....

now i can see how there would be a racism problem still going on in the south...to be honest most caucasian men around their 50's that i have talked to seem to say somewhat racist things.. if they talk about a person in a story and the person wasnt white they seem to mention the race(which is inappropriate)

Personally i think referring to black people as 'African-americans' Was stupid. I work with a lot of black people and have asked them, if you are from haiti why do we call you african-american. It implies all black people are from Africa. ANd they aren't. The are from all over (Bahamas, Haiti, Jamiaca, Europe, etc) and referring to them as Africans is WRONG!

I am not offended by this post but i do feel that you are misinformed and misguided.
1. I don't think most black people are stereotyped as drug dealers, nor do i think most white people are just money spenders...These are generalizations/prejudices that have existed but in my opinion isn't the majority by far. Personally these comments are weird to me.

2. No i can't 'become' black for a day. But i listen to friends talk about their lives and the people around them lives EVERYDAY. SO i have a good working knowledge about the environmental challenges that they have to deal with. They are NOT COMPLAINING, they are just trying thier best to deal with the life situations they were delt with and that are not so easy. THEY are going out and trying to do the best they can, it ain't that easy when as an 16 year old you family greatly depends on you. SO maybe if you actually talked with a person from this situation, you could understand that evethough they have control over their life...it doesn't mean that is it...There are other factors that are in thier life that make it quite hard to just 'work hard, go get what you want'.

EDITED TO SAY...this conversation is not sad nor is it weak. It is enlightening to some, i hope. Some of the people here do not have the wealth of knowledge or experience (black or white), to form a complete educated opinion on this topic and by discussing our thoughts and views...helps us learn, helps us understand all points of this topic. And i say that is great!
