Hey Butterfly - there IS a NAAWP, and they are are all for things like non-integrated schools, a stop to immigration, controlling minority birthrates - NAAWP
sounds neo-nazi to me
now i dont agree with that....it does sound nazi like suggesting non integrated school.... thats plain wrong.... my suggestion is that people should be treated fairly, not advantaged based on race, or religion, or sexual preferance....
ALSO.....i think it was wrong when they had the picture of the three fireman(or whatever htey were) putting up the flag at the 9-11 site, they happened to be white men, and someone wanted them changed to be 3 different races.. now thats just crazy, the people who put it up were white, thats something they will share with their grandkids and all, what are they suppose to say when they are portrayed as something they are not?...

Yep. I went out to get a cup of coffee and the person working there - who was not white - was really rude to me. I went back to my In law's house and they said, 'Yes seems right, they hate the white people around here'.
I'd rather not say where this is, it is on LI - but it was a really weird feeling.

I totally agree. Or what about the all black beauty pageants or all black magazines. No offense but if white poeple had all white beauty pageants or magazines everyone would have a heart attack. It's even in the title of the pageant and magazine. I think it is wrong. I couldn't even enter a Miss. Black America. It is there rules. What about Miss. White America. Forget it. It should be able to go both ways and it doesn't. Everyone would be up in arms Sorry to go on but sometimes this makes me very angry JMO!!

Re: spinoff from sandals-- bigoted on the BHB board
Okay, I am going to go out on a limb and say that I am from Brentwood (born and raised) and I found that I didn't get the same opportunities as minority students even though we had the same education.
If it is believed that we need affirmative action so that students who don't get the same education can have a chance, then why is a white kid not given as much of a chance getting into a good college as a black or hispanic kid from the same high school? Why was a white kid from Brentwood passed over for admission to Harvard and a Hispanic kid waltzed in, though the white kid was a better student and they both came from nice families and neither of them were struggling?
Why was I made to feel like a minority in my high school and not given a chance? I wasn't pushed along and helped to achieve. I wanted to go to a Seven Sisters school and was wait listed while some other minority students were slipped under the red tape.
I live in a town where I experience reverse racism all the time. Why didn't I get the opportunities to see what I could be and where I could go?
Grrrr.
And would someone please tell me what White English is????

This is so easy to say, I mean come ON - how many kids are going to go home and teach themselves something they weren't taught in school? Did you do that?
ive been doing that for a few of my college courses but i guess realistically i know in my school(middleschool and high school) if you didnt understand something you could go to the teachers extra help OR the honors students volunteered time to teach you at no charge!

that was my point earlier.... when both with have similar lower income how come one gets preference over the other...the white people are actually suffering from it...

Re: spinoff from sandals-- bigoted on the BHB board
Hmmmm...I always go back and forth on this subject. I do feel that there is a number of people that are at a disadvantage as far as schooling goes.. I do feel the majority of those people are minorities. Yes there are poor white people who grew up in these areas. And i understand Juliets issue. But the fact is she was, like she said the minority in that area. WHich means most of the people who live and went to school there were minorities. I do feel there are people that are at a huge disadvantage and do not have the luxuries that most white people have. Are there white people who have this issue...definately. IMO...i feel that as the years go by more and more 'good' schools are becoming multiracial. SO i do have hope for the future. But it doesn't deny what still exists. I do feel that minorities are at a disadvantage and understand why there is affirmitive action. But i would also piss me off if i applied to a job or school that i was looked over because of a quota.

One thing that I really feel strongly about is that class is not an issue talked about much in the US. Poor whites are not given affirmative action in any sense, and they may lose the most since they are considered the same as all other white people.
I do not begrudge people of color anything - but I do feel that poor people of all races are the ones who really need help.
Our 'enemy' is not a minority group, but a system that allows people with $ to have better education, police, hospitals, etc. than those without. JMO.

But the bottom line is that those who have the majority of the money in this country are white men- and when you have the majority of the money- you have the majority of the power. There NEEDS to be government intervention to level the playing field- and that is why affirmitive action is necessary- because without it, there would only be the same white people educated and in power

I don't think that anyone should be given anything based on race or gender alone. I also do not agree with affirmative action. If you make the grade, then you get in. It's that simple.
Money is power, and that power buys you a better education, better healthcare, a better quality of life. Sad, but true. But you know what, to some extent that makes sense to me. You can still get an education if you don't have money (think community colege VS. Ivy league school), you can still get healthcare (state clinic vs. private hospital), you can still eat (mac and chees vs. filet mignon). If you have more money, you get to have nicer things. I've worked very hard for what I have, I'd be very resentful if someone who didn't got the same priviledges as I have just because of race or gender.

OMG i have to totally disagree..A good education is everything. ANd where you get that education predicts A LOT. The better college you go to directly affects you. A job will MORE likely hire a Ivy leaguer as opposed to a community college grad...UNLESS you 'know the right people' which in most cases miniorities or people from poor areas DO NOT!

Re: spinoff from sandals-- bigoted on the BHB board
I've tried to stay out of this topic because I just think the orginal poster may not have spent alot of time out of NY or maybe LI.
I have now lived in Colorado, PA, Texas and Florida. I now live very close to Alabama right and in most cases poorer white people enjoy being poorer white people. I know many rednecks who are estatic with their lifestyle, there kids may not be but hopefully there kids while use there parents lack of funds and get a grant and go to college and make a difference in their lives also my husband did it they can join the military and get a GI bill or attend an academy.
IMO LI doesn't have any true poor white, black or hispanic people if people are poor it is due to the horrible economy and insane cost of living... if they moved or gave up some expensive tastes they may have they could probably help there families out more.
I have to agree with Oct2004 but disagree with you wendy. I have had numerous friends who attended IVY league schools Georgetown for one and they are very unemployed and now trying to attend the same IVY school to go to Law School while at the same time I attended a CUNY school (JJAY) and only paid about 20,000 for 4 years including commuting and I have a much more useful degree with in my field a much better name.
Even though you weren't comparing a CUNY with an IVY league I still think your post did not make sense there are many community college grads who get just as much out of there college years as an Ivy leaguer they just spent alot less money on the first two years!
My former orthopedist was a Harvard Man but he was still a butthead and screwed up my knee surgery, attending a more expensive IVY doesn't make you any better then anyone.
What it comes down to is how much a parent stresses school, if you stay in school even in the crappiest of areas and try to give it your all and have some parental help or atleast a bigbrother/bigsister you will do great in this world.
In the long run there are groups that help all people who are down on their luck... The United Way, Big Brother/Big Sisters, Salvation Army!

Re: spinoff from sandals-- bigoted on the BHB board
Doesn't all of this come down to excuses? Excuses for why some do better then others, why some excel and others don't? The excuses perpetuate the problem. If we are old enough and intelligent enough to have an opinion then we are old enough to do something about it, to have the drive to make more of ourselves regardless of our skin color or else not become anything and blame others.
I agree with a lot of the posts that there are a million problems affecting our youth, our cultures, our society.... but until each individual person takes responsibility for what they CAN do with their life vs what the cannot do, we will always have affirmative action, rich vs. poor and so on. I truly believe you can do anything with your life regardless of finances, skin color or background...but some will suffer to do it more then others and that's where the complaining comes in. I could have EASILY studied and went to an IVY league school, I could easily do that now, yet the need to buy new shoes and a big screen tv is what has me living paycheck to paycheck. Does affirmative action now bother me, yes, because I am competing for placing in schools where this is an issue and up against all the others who are in similiar situations...had I CHANGED my own situation, affirmative action may not now be the issue because I would have easily gotten in on my own merit......JMO...I know some don't agree, and I appreciate the difference in opinions....... and this is a little longwinded....

I never meant to imply that community college grads (I am one of them) are less educated or under-employed. My point was that money can buy you things, in most cases nicer things.
