Re: spinoff from sandals-- bigoted on the BHB board
but arent there laws that require a certain amount of non white people to be hired or admitted to a college not because of their performance, but because of their skin color.... doesnt that hurt white people who have a better performance?
plus there are some colored people out there who still blaim the current white people for the slavery that happened over 100 years ago, the current people werent around 100 years ago yet they get harassed over it...
in 2004 i feel that they have become equal that there shouldnt be an organization giving extra treatment to one over the other because then its discriminating the other race(white).... its completely reversed..

Don't forget that we live in New York. There's plenty of places in this country where discrimination is still extremely prevelant.

good point... but then how do you distinguish it? because then in other places they are made equal , but in New york(and i assume other large city areas) they are given special treatment without merit?

You would probably understand the NAACP a little bit better if you read up on them. Here's just a little quote from their website.
The NAACP sponsors a variety of programs to make real the promise of America. Our programs are designed to ensure civil rights compliance, equitable treatment of all Americans under law, the attainment of educational excellence, access to health care, and economic empowerment. Our political empowerment initiative is devoted to that most fundamental right of all Americans, fully participatory democracy.

Affirmative Action Laws are very strict. The Supreme Court uses an anaylsis called strict scrutiny to determine whether or not an affirmative action plan will pass judicial review. Most of the time the Afirmative action plans fail. An example of an Affirmative action plan that passed was the Michigan law school case last year. There the school used a point system to determine admissibility of students. For example a student who was on a sport in undergrad could get 5 points, a student that was cume laude gets five points, a student that was a minority and from an impoverished background could get five points, a student that was from out of state could get five points. Add the points together to determine who gets in. So the school gave the same amount of points to minorities as it gave to other circumstances. You can get points if you are from a single parent household or the head of a single parent household too. An example of an affirmative action plan that would not pass is quotas. Holding a certain number of seats or jobs for minority students. A lot of people think this is what Affirmative Action is - but it isnt In addition to minorities white men and women benefit from these plans. Understading diversity is a key element to success in the business world. There are affirmative action plans to help women get jobs that were primarily held by men and for men to get into occupations primarily held by women (like nursing).

I don't agree with affirmative action , for a number of reasons, but I don't, by any means feel that it has reversed. There is a lot of discrimination, even in NYC. And the opportunites are NOT equal. Schools and neighborhoods are just not the same.
For one example...I went to Stuyvesant, the best HS in NYC, arguably the country...and we had to take an exam to get in. That having been said, it was 51% asian, 43% White and 6% black and hispanic combined when I was there. That is a completely unbalanced and non-representative selection of people. Theoretically the smartest people would be from all races, not just whote and asian. What can we get from this . Either...black and hispanic people are dumb...(TOTALLY NOT TRUE), or there's something in the school or community that isn;t allowing them to achieve their full potential.
In my freshman year of HS, 100's of black and hispanic parents flooded the lobby of my school in protest, some claiming the test was unfair b/c it was written in 'white english'...and most claiming that their schools did not properly prepare their children for the exam.
The first claim, while it sounds ridiculous at first thought, has some validity, because the children in mostly blakc neighborhoods are not being taught standard american english in their schools, at least not adequately. And many studies of schools have corroborated the second.
Just 2 cents.

Under title X public & private education facilities are not permitted to discriminate on the basis of race. However to get away with discrimination many schools and jobs have started to and continue to use standardized tests has a screen to determine hireability and acceptability. If these tests have a disporportant impact on minorities is is against the law. It is called disperate impact and if a job or school is caught doing this then it can be enjoined from using the test, forced to admit those adversly affected by the test and have to pay compensatory damages.

Re: spinoff from sandals-- bigoted on the BHB board
I have some big issues with a few things...one that the schools say a percentage of it's students should be from one culture/background or another ( leading into affirmative action) People should be admitted/hired based solely on their performance, not the color of their skin and it's insane tho think otherwise. Attitutude and desire takes you where you want to go, not skin color...I also hate the idea of any black person speaking about slavery and how it has affected them personally unless they can trace their roots to it ....do we not remember that the north before and after the Civil war were non-slave states where slavery was completly illegal...so if your family was here at that time, they were never shown that lifestyle, yet too many people believe all blacks were part of slavery somewhere in their history and that's insane. It is similiar to using the 'I'm a wonam' approach as woman have in history had to struggle...Is that fact getting me anywhere in life...of course not...I could on but I'm afraid of somone taking my words out of context....

When I was down in the Keys, the black people were like from the 1950's. They walk ten steps behind the whites looking down at all times. It was very surreal. My husband asked if he should tell them about the civil rights movement. I was embarrassed. Meanwhile the white trash is walking around all high and mighty........very strange culture down there.

Actually, that's not insane. African Americans were BROUGHT here - and even though slavery was outlawed in the North it wasn't ALWAYS outlawed in the north, it just didn't serve the same kind of economic purpose did in the south so it was outlawed early on. So a large majority of African Americans that can trace their roots in this country back to the Civil War can probably trace their roots even farther back to when their family were slaves.
That said, I don't like slavery being blamed on today's society either. But discrimination does still happen all over. Things are better than they were 30, 50 or 100 years ago, but they still have a long way to go. JMO

So by that standardto get 10 points you can
1) be a minority from an imporverished background from out of state OR
2)local student who is cume laude student, and is on a sport..
how is that fair in contributing to the school? being out of state and another race verses intelligence and sports??

With affirmative action, it's not fair..
without affirmative actions, it's not fair.
I think the real problem is that minority students aren't getting the right education form day 1. If everyone had the same opportunies, then the colleges would reflect the ethnic background percentages of the community at large, and there would be no need for aff action.

i agree....its kinda also what you make of it... if your in a bad school system then you need to work harder at home to try and understand the stuff, ask for help more in class, sometimes people need to ask instead of letting stuff go buy and it becoming too little too late....word hard, EARN IT.. its always more rewarding to acheive based on accomplicements verses having things handed to to...

Re: spinoff from sandals-- bigoted on the BHB board
I agree. WHihc is why I don't like aff action. I think it teles minorites 'well, you can't do this on your own, so we will help you.' And I think that's terrible. I missed the cutoff score for a school I wanted to get into by 2 points, and they offerred me affirmative action admission based on economic status, I was 12, but I refused it. I'd rahter be there b/c I deserved it.
On the other hand , I think 'earn it' is a little harsh and way easier said than done. These kids, for the most part, don't get the encouragement and support they need. And even fi they work ahrd, the school syste can't support them , or they have tot kae care of younger siblings while mom is at work, or face other pressures most of us don't understand.
I worked for the summer at a program that tutors underpriviledged kids for the SAT and college apps. Most of these kids didn't een think they could go to college if tey wanted to. they honestly believed that it was only for rich people. They thought 'what's the use' and the parnets believed it even more deeply than did the kids. If that's ingrained in you, you're not gonna see the use in working hard in HS.

This is so easy to say, I mean come ON - how many kids are going to go home and teach themselves something they weren't taught in school? Did you do that?

Hey Butterfly - there IS a NAAWP, and they are are all for things like non-integrated schools, a stop to immigration, controlling minority birthrates - NAAWP
