Spinoff: Long Distance Relationship? Come Play The Game!

Ok... the question came up as to what would be considered 'too far' to date somebody.

Who here had to travel some distance to see their FI's before you got engaged, decided to move in together, etc.

Are you one of those people that 'racked up the mileage' on your car to see a happy ending?

I'll start.

I lived in Bayside Queens, my FW lived in Riverhead.

One-Way Mapquest miles: 62.71

We now live together.

I lived on LI and my dh lived in NJ...since Summer of 1999 to the day we got married Sept 25 2004, we always rotated weekends to see each other. We very rarely saw each other during the week...

We also met in college in RI.
Nferrandi - what college did you go to?

I went to URI Sept. 95 to Dec. 95. After all the driving, I transferred schools to be closer to DH. Man, if we didn't get married I would really regret that decision right about now!

I went to Roger Williams University..maybe we crossed paths at some point freshman year..we went to URI a lot..hmmmmm

DH and I met in Japan while serving in the military. After dating for 4 months (Dec) he got out and I was still there until June. He flew over in March to see me for 10 days.

Distance approx. 5000 mi. Plane ride approx. 15 hours. Cost approx. $1000.00

Then he moved to California with me when I got reassigned in June. During the first 2 years of dating I was sent away so many times. We were apart more than we were together. Then I got out and now we are married and live here.

I lived in Brooklyn

DH in Kings Park

He'd drive in to see me on Friday or Saturday night, we'd go out in the city, then he'd go home the next day. OR..I'd take the train out to see him. But he lived with his parents, so I wasn't really psyched to go to LI.

We moved in together in Broklyn after about one year.

I have students who keep relationships going from around the world. US - Korea, US - Morocco, US - France...

FH is permantely stationed in NC and I am on Long Island butright now he is in Iraq and if the govt. would let me Id fly there to visit him, its been a long long 7 months and we still got two more *at least* to do!

For the first year we were only about 15 miles apart (me in smithtown, him in coram). Then I went to college in Virginia - just over 400 miles away. I couldn't drive to see him since I couldn't have a car on campus, but he came down three times I believe - and we saw eachother over breaks.

He transfered there his junior year (my sophomore year) so I got to see him almost ever day So happy we got to go to school together - I don't think I could have taken 3 or 4 more years away from him!

I lived in Manhattan at the time I met DH. He lived in St. Louis.

Mapquest Distance: 987 miles!

Since the car ride was 16 hrs, we racked up a significant amount of frequent flier miles. Between the two of us, we had about 170K miles with American Airlines.

We used to see each other anywhere between 3-6 weeks depending on our schedule and we did this for almost 2 years until I moved to St. Louis.

I never thought LDR worked...before meeting DH. He was worth it.

Year 1: I was in Costa Rica, he was in NYC
Years 2-7: I was in California, he was in NYC
Year 8: I was in Boston, he was in NYC
Year 9: I was on the upper west side, he was on the upper east
Year 9 +9 months: we *finally* got married!

I actually grew up in Woodside. I didn't move to Bayside till I was 27. And I am actually in Oakland Gardens which is considered South Bayside.

I lived in Middle Village and DH lived in Shirley

I did the trip every weekend for 2 years- I lived with mom and he lived alone so it made sense that we would stay by him for the weekend.

mapquest distance 57 miles, it was sure hard during hamptons traffic

when Dh and i was dating He lived in west Islip and I lived with my mom at the time in ridge he did the driving because he liked coming out to me. so i guess it took him atleast 45 minutes to get to where my mom and dad lives.

My DH lived in Lynbrook when I met him in July '99 and I lived in Huntington. I also don't drive so DH made the trip out to pick me up all the time. About 45min to an hour away.

He also was working rotating shifts so sometimes we'd go 2-3 weeks without seeing each other but sometimes he'd come to my office in the morning or afternoon with breakfast or lunch.

When I was working in Carle Place and then Westbury then I'd take the train west & meet him on the train in Jamaica with my stuff for the weekend and stay at his place usually. I did that for a little while when I started working in Huntington too.

He finally sold his place & moved in with me in March of '03.

I was by Queens Blvd and 60th street.
