Spinoff to 'how big is it'

Original post by suven

I am wondering:

Why is it an issue to post about the size of a diamond, but it's commonly accepted that we:

1. Chat about price per head
2. Chat about price of photo
3. Chat about price of music
4. Chat about price of flowers
5. Chat about price of limos

We're proud to talk about the 'good deal' we got on our price per head, but the size of my stone...OH DON'T GO THERE

I think it's also important to remember that for many men, choosing the engagement ring (and paying for it) can be one of the most stressful purchases they make. Since many engagment rings are likely also chosen with the groom's taste in mind, it can be really hurtful to a man if he sense his wife-to-be doesn't like it.

It's important in a case like that to realize the real reason you're getting married. You love your fiance, he chose you, and he loves you enough to put his heart and money into choosing a sentimental piece of jewelry for you. If you love him, take it, love him, and love it because of what it means, and pick out the wedding band you love.

IMO, this is the best statement I ever read on LIW! I think we have to remember that our men worked so hard and saved their money to buy us all something that symbolized 'will you marry me'. They went out and shopped around until they found what they felt was the perfect ring. Picture these men in the store looking at all these different rings and finally saying to the salesman, I'll take this one, she's going to love it; or I can't wait to give it to her.

I don't think anyone should get upset by these types of threads, because everyone of us should be happy and proud that our soon-to-be grooms picked out these beautiful rings, no matter what size, clarity, color, etc.. And most important we should all be happy that we have these amazing men that love us so much! The ring size does not matter, but it is nice to hear all of you talk about your rings and how much you love them and the stories behind some of them. I actually really enjoy reading these threads.

HEY RACHEL!

The day after I got engaged, my MIL said 'my diamond is bigger than yours.'

DH was so mad because A. It's not bigger, it's actually 7 points smaller. B. Her's has a CHIP in it (she did it)

LOL!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!! so funny... my FH told my FMIL the description of the ring he wanted to get me and she said 'I think it's a little unnecessary for her to get a 2.5 carat ring' so my FH goes 'but yours is 3 carats?!!!'

FH told me he thinks she didn't want mine to be nicer than hers or even come close!!! i mean, who thinks like this?!!!!!!! LOL!!!

Sounds like Momma is a bit jealous of the love in her darling son's life!! Some of the FMIL's can be really vicious!

It also sounds as though there's a bit more going on in his mother's head than whether or not your 'ring' is nicer than hers. There might also be that element of 'I want to make sure I'm not being replaced!'

because it's more of a personal question, it's a question like how much money do you make, no one really likes to answer that but when put in a corner you tend to give in.

Some questions you just don't ask, they are rude.

see... that's why I personally don't get... how is it more of a personal question? What makes it so personal? It's not any more a reflection of your salary than anything else in your wedding is... it's not like people are asking how much you spent on the ring... for example, my ring looks about $1000 more expensive than it really is because my FH knew what he was doing picking it out, and he also got a really good deal on it...

So, yeah. I'm with the original poster here, I don't really understand how one is more rude than the other. If people feel that way they are perfectly entitled to their opinions, I just don't really understand it.

Very true.. saying a size doesnt mean anything. There can be one 1 carat diamond itself worth 800 and another worth 6000. So saying the size of a diamond can not be a reflection of how much money a person makes. Plus a couple may like to spend $ on other things like a house or cars etc.. and not care about a 3 carat ring--> doesnt mean they maek less money.

Asking how much someone is paying for there wedding or hall or per plate is known to be rude. But this is a chat baord so informal questions are going to be asked.

Re: Spinoff to 'how big is it'

Maybe part of the animosity was the 'way' it was asked. Perhaps if the OP asked 'What does your e-ring look like?' it might have been more a more palatable question and readers wouldn't have felt offended. I'm personally not offended at all by it, but I understand why some readers might be.

BTW, if people can post answers and pictures in response, other people are certainly entitled to say why they don't like the post and why. It isn't fair to allow some people to show their ring and deny others the right to post adversely or to tell them if they don't like the post, then they just should not respond at all. Open forum means open ideas and conversation.

AHHH I LOVE IT!!!! soooo true--- she cried when FH simply mentioned in passing that when we get married we'll have a fake xmas tree b/c we want to get a dog and they tend to go crazy over the real trees-- she started to cry!! 'you'll never have a real tree again' 'everything she says you do!!!' hahahaha!!!!!! FH was like it's a tree, who cares?!!!

there are so many stories--it's CRAZY, he kisses me and hugs me and i can see her just looking at us---AHH it's so FREUDIAN!!! hahaha, EVERY time we hug and kiss in front of her she either just gives us daggers or (and it's not like we are making out AT ALL) OR she'll be like 'alright ENOUGH, do you ALWAYS have to kiss her? and hug her??' LOL!!!!!!

when she's not doing this she's saying things like 'oh i saw Mrs. Stewart today, her daughter is doing so well at her job, it's a shame you weren't older or she wasn't younger' !!!!!!! or 'Megan next door looks GREAT--remember how we always used to say you two would make a great couple?'

she's INSANE and I just want to pull my hair out when I have to deal with her!!!

YES living proof of that right here girls!!! My FH and I do NOT (by ANY means) have a lot of money and we make BELOW the national average per year in terms of salary AND we are both finishing up school.... but he saved like crazy for close to seven or eight months to get my ring AND we happen to know someone so he got the ring for a little over 'market' value so in a jewelry store or something like that it would have been SOOOO much more than he paid... but it's a great ring---trust me though, we are NOWHERE near rich!!!

edited: forgot about my crazy aunt joan-- perfect example-- she's a millionaire and buys clothes from a thrift store!! she went to europe and stayed in youth hostiles and she has NEVER bought herself a piece of nice jewelry--she gets everything from 'estate' sales and she won't spend more than a few hundred dollars AT the most!! she is just not the type of person to EVER spend money on ANYTHING... so funny!! she spent 12 bucks on my sister's engagement gift-- she's great, so many great family stories when aunt joan is brought up!!!

See the problem is when people keep writting how offensive or rude this topic is but they keep clicking on this topic and reading it, I say stop reading. I think alot of girls on here are acting jealous not 'offended'.

I don't want to start up any more drama, but can I offer a possible reason why people get so sensative about the size of the ring and not about the price of halls, etc.

Typically the guy buys the ring and we do the shopping for the other stuff. When we post about what we paid for a florist or photographer we may reveal how much that particular part of the wedding means to us or that we got a bargain.

Rings are a gift from our FHs and like it or not there is often an implication (TOTALLY unwarrented and usually untrue) about either the guy (like how much $$ he makes) or the relationship (bigger = better???) loaded in the specs.

Its not right that this happens, but that's what I got from reading the post of people who were offended. JMO

I agress completely.........it 'appears' that way to some......but is not so much the case..........

I don't understand why anyone was offended by the original post. It was a poll, which is anonymous. What's the big deal?

You lost me on how it's any different from 'what are you paying per head.'

They are all inappropriate questions, but somehow the rest are okay to chat about, but NOT the diamond...
