So Jess was posting about how she will feel when she signs checks with her new name.. and I have thought about how strange it will be to have to write something different than I have been writing all my life... Does anyone practice writing out their new names? I have done it once or twice but I find it totally strange and can't do it.

Re: spinoff to Jessica's posts
I look at it this way:
It's weird for 25 years I have been B_____i
But if I live to 75, 50 of those years I will be Mrs. M____i.
So, 2/3 of my life, I will have my 'new' last name.
P.S. I've been writing my first name w/ his last name since i've been 13

I was just thinking about how completely weird it is going to be when I have to write out my 'new' name. UGH. I haven't practiced, and probably won't till after we are married (so weird!)

Re: spinoff to Jessica's posts
I've done it a few times just to see how it looks (I like it!). But I try not to do it too often. I sign my name a lot at work and I can't wait to sign it with my new name, it'll be esp weird since he works here too.
I don't think it'll be too hard of a transition tho, when I sign my name now I include my middle initial which is the same initial as FH's last name. So I'll kind of be reminding myself, but I'm sure I'll forget sometimes and fall into 'old habits'.

I hate my C's and have alot of work to do

I think it will be weird to call myself Mrs. M____i!! 'Hi, this is Eleanor M____i, I'm calling to make an appointment for my husband!!' I picture it like when you get your 'Spanish' names in 7th grade Spanish. I remember my teacher saying 'Maria, Maria.... ELEANOR' Because I would always forget I was Maria!! Or when My birthday has just passed and I say 'I'm 24, no 25' Thats what I think it will be like. Does that make sence?

I practiced it once, to see what it looked like and to see if it was difficult to write. It was easy to write and looked ok. Then I got superstitious and ripped it up, haven't done it since.

It makes perfect sense!!!
I mistake my age all the time!!!
But to answer your question, I've practiced a few times and just saying 'I'm Mrs. Felix' makes me all gitty inside!!!

I haven't written my new last name yet! But actually when we went to Colonial Williamsburg in June the woman assumed that we were already married and my name on my pass appears as Kathleen NEW LAST NAME!

Re: spinoff to Jessica's posts
wow, good point..I'm gonna have to practice! I have such messy script..I need to 'learn' how to write my new last name in cursive!
I think it's gonna be weird at work...This is my first year in a school and the kids are gonna be so confused by my new name!..I think I will just use both for a while at school

Re: spinoff to Jessica's posts
Having just gotten my license this week, they asked what name I was going to use after we were married. I was apprehensive even though I knew all along I was going to take FH's surname. I had wanted to adopt my maiden name as a second middle name after we were married through the courts, but I was told that it end up making things difficult records wise. So I said goodbye to my last name and am now practicing my new signature. I am still going to use both last names whether it be legal or not! None of this hyphen business. Too complicated for me.

Re: spinoff to Jessica's posts
I have been practicing writing my first name with his last name since I was 16! I do tend to do it a lot now, whenever I am on the phone and pen and paper is accessible, I find myself scribbling Mrs. Jennifer W______ all over it. Fh thinks its adorable

i think in the beginning it's going to be like when we change years and sometimes you forget because you're so used to writing 2005, and in the beginning you slip and write the old one by accident. i am sure i will do that with my old last name.

Re: spinoff to Jessica's posts
I have never wrote my new last name before, too wierd for me. Besides, it wasn't my last name...yet. I'll have forever to write it once it's real. Saying it to someone else if they asked....yes! Writting it Never!
I am trying to get used to it now!!!!! It's hard. But I am sure in time, saying or writting my maiden name will sound very wierd to me.

Re: spinoff to Jessica's posts
it was very weird walking out of SS knowing you were a 'different' person. I was Ms.___ for 27 yrs and to think that person doesnt exist was weird. It did take me a while to remember to sign my new name at work.
