Spinoff to 'were your parents racist'

Original post by The Original 2nd-time-around

Would you consider YOURSELF racist? And how would you feel if your child dated someone outside of their race?

I wanted to add that most of the times I felt treated poorly b/c of my race, it was coming from other minorities. I will never understand that.

Again, I think the term 'racist' is being used very loosely. If someone poses a question, then those who read the post need to be prepared to see things they do not like. I wonder why THIS thread hasn't been removed when threads of a similar nature have.

The amount of 'yes' answers is actually pretty disheartening.

I grew up in a black neighborhood, and I can tell you that there are a LOT of prejudiced
people all over. However, my family always knew people from different backgrounds and I was influenced by many different kinds of people growing up. My stepgrandfather is Greek! The HS I went to was multicultural and accepting of everyone in terms of race (Brooklyn Tech). I had hoped that the rest of the world was more like that and less like this.

*howdy!* Stuy here!

I used to see a lot of tech people watching sports and stuff. From what I saw tech was MUCH more diverse than Stuy. I wish Stuy had been more diverse. About 6% when I was there was black and hispanic people COMBINED

I have prejudices, which I am very aware of and try to set aside, but I am not racist.

I wouldn't care if my child dated someone out of our race, but to be totally honest, I would care if it was someone outside of our religion. That's not at all b/c of a dislike for non-Jews, but b/c I want my children to marry Jewish one day. It's a matter of wanting them to have Jewish children and further the Jewish people, and with the increasing rate of intermarriage, there are less and less children being raised Jewish. JMHO.

This is interesting. I never realized why but a lot of my friends were jewish in college and none of them would date outside there religion. I actually had problems finding guys at my school who would date me becuase i was not jewish. I never really understood why and thought it was a prejudiced thing against me. I didn't realize it is more of the thought of furthing the jewish people.

As for myself my parents were not racist nor am i. I have been with people who were not my race. However, i do find i have issues with other nationalities or religions. Not because i disrespect them or anything like that but more because i kind of say things that people of that nationality/religion are known for. Its totally wrong and i feel bad when i do say something .... but i think every person i know does something like this. Guys actually make jokes to each other about it i have seen.

I guess its just a feeling of weirdness because it is not normal in your world...if that made any sense....

The term is being used loosely, thats why there are so many different opinions here. And so far this thread is a good one, no fighting or disrespecting, just opinions, so there would be no reason for it to be removed?

I get a little heated talking about racism. Its something so deplorable to me, to think that someone can think ill feelings towards someone, or less of someone due to the color of their skin ( and or relgion if talking of that) I completly understand not dating/marrying outside of your race/relgion..thats not racisim, thats PREFERENCE...and understandable...But racism itself is a negative teerm to think of someone differnet then you.

I didnt see naything I didnt like here on this thread...I saw things that shocked me. I didnt judge because I thought maybe the people who said yes, were thinking like I mentioned above about preference and thats a different story, but to say that you feel better then someone , or negatively towards someone because of their skin color makes me outraged, and thats simply my opinion.

This is not something like abortion where you can debate BOTH sides of the coin, and if open minded say there are two sides to the story...

We are ALL human, theres only one side of the coin here, and I would love to see if anyone in this world could rationalize being racist to me.

Sorry, like I said this touches a nerve with me, though I have tried to be respectful and intelligent in what Im trying to say.

There is no need for you to say you are sorry for speaking up about something you obviously are so passionate about. Racism in and of itself is quite ugly. That is a point I cannot and will not dispute. Unfortunately not everyone is always able to articulate their feelings which leaves so much open for misinterpretation.

when fh and I started dating in college my parents were concerned...(he is Spanish, from Ecuador) they thought it was just a fling so didnt say much but when it got more serious they took the time to get to KNOW HIM for who he was and grew to love him like a son. They were worried about what 'other people' would say about a mixed relationsip because when they were growing up it was a lot different .. i am fortunate to say we only have a few instances of some prejudice... I think we are in an age where people are more accepting... i could go on and on about this topic but i wont...

I am not prejudice by color but maybe by the way someone dresses. If I see people dressed nicely, I don't think anything of them but as soon as I see someone who looks disheveled, then I become weary.

Good question. My parents are not racist at all. If my child brought home a blue person who she or he loved, that'd be fine by me! I've dated all kinds of guys and my parents always trusted my judgement in the person's character, not their color.
