Spinoff to yesterdays post of the police officer that wasnt indicted...ATTN: POLICE OFFICER WIVES AND POLICE OFFICER FAMILIES

Original post by Cindy

After reading yesterdays post, it seems clear that people who do not have police officers in their family are very critical to this police officer not getting indicted or maybe police officers in general. My husband came home this morning after working 14 hours all night and told me about his grueling night. To hear such comments like a police officer shows stupidity when making a mistake or not having his wits is extremely upsetting to me when people know NOTHING about what goes into this job.

My question is: Do friends of yours who are not from a police officer family show negativity toward police or are they supportive since they are your friend?

Wow Karen, thank you for sharing all of that.
I share in your feelings.

MichelleW - Thank you for sharing too. God bless your husband and all the firefighters too.

kmcwed....VERY WELL SAID! You stated everything I want to say, but didn't know how to get it out appropiately! Thank you! AMEN to all you said--it's all true--every last word!

I'll pray for your husband's protection!

ETA: My family has served/is currently serving in the NYPD, Village of Garden City & Village of Old Brookville.

I just wanted to say that I think LI cops are GROSSLY overpaid compared to NYPD. I think some of LI-er's tax $ should go to pay for NYPD and taken off of LI cops pay since so many of us work in the city.

Cluelessbride - This post has nothing to do with pay and taxes. I was the one that started this post. Since my husband works on the island, I will take your 'grossly overpaid' comment from where it is coming from.

So Cindy....you think it is fair that Suffolk County and Nassau County cops are paid FAR more than NYPD???

This has nothing to do with you personally - my father is a Suffolk detective - and even he thinks it's not fair to the NYPD.

What do you want to hear? That I respect your husband and allpilics officers? I do! Does that mean I can't have an opinion about my father's profession just as you have an opinion about your husband's?

Clueless - You can have any opinion you want.

I think NYPD is VERY underpaid for their job. Is it unfair, yes. I dont have anything to do with how much one jurisdiction makes from the other. My friends fiance works in the city and makes more than my husband, to be honest, alot more movement than out here.

And...no I dont want you to say you respect my husband. Hell, you dont know him. That absolutely had nothing to do with what this thread was about.

You know after re-reading the original post by Cindy I realize that this was meant as a place to be sympathetic to the plight of all police officers - and for that reason I am sorry I posted anything negative about LI cops here - even if it was in SUPPORT OF NYPD.

So I apologize if I offended anyone, it certainly was not my intention.

My dad was a cop in one of the most expensive places to live on Long Island and while, it is true that the city cops deserve more $$$$, they all deserve equal respect! (NOT implying or saying that anyone said they didn't!) to all!

WOW, what a touchy subject!!!!
What I think it boils down to is holding the officer accountable for his\her actions. What happened in Brooklyn was a horrible mistake, unfortunately because of that mistake a life was loss. That's the bottom line!

I am a nurse and if I made a mistake and accidently overmedicated a patient and caused their death I would have to face the consquences. I might even have my nursing license revoked, depending on the situation.

I don't think anyone thinks that cops go to work every with the thought, Today I'm going to kill a unarmed black man! That's abosultely ridciculous. Cops are generally good people, they have to be to that job.

The problem with the police and the general public, it seems that cops can get away with murder. (Not my opinion), but due to the media and past incidents I can see how many people think that way.

I am not anti-cop, and I have police officers in my immediate family. I know they have one of the toughest jobs in the world especially in NYC. I believe every professional regardless of his\her occupation should be held accountable for their actions. It just seems that police officers sometimes aren't held to the same standard if a mistake was made.

Those are just my opinions! I hope some people can understand why so many people are Anti-cop. I think it has to do with some of the above.

I was not going to comment but I something popped in my mind and I thought we should all think about it:
How many times have you been someplace you were not suppose to be? I used to go the clubs when I was 19 with fake ID- that is illegal. And I was not the only under age kid there either. In high school we hung out on Rt.231 at various spots- we were not suppose to be doing that. I don't think my mom was a bad mom because of that either. And am I one of the few people I know who has never been drunk in her life or smoked pot- so lots of teenagers are doing illegal stuff every single day and that is in ALL areas, not just poorer areas or 'bad' areas.
And while there are many social and ecomonic problems in poor areas all over the country I think it is amazing that so many grandmothers stand up and do their best to raise their grandchildren. Who else would do it? Scott and I do not have a foster teenager in our home- do you?
Your right, where are the parents is a huge question but I can also say that during my parent's divorce my dad came around 2x a month, maybe. I was lucky that we didn't live in project or bad area because maybe if I did my life would be very, very different. Just some stuff for us all to consider.

I don't think LI cops (especially Suffolk) are grossly overpaid.

I think NYPD cops are grossly UNDERPAID in comparison.

There's a difference.

Thanks Karen! I couldnt of said it better myself.

i think that unless your in the situation that this cop was in it is hard to say what you would do. my dh is a police officer and he feels the same way. he was on the roof patroling not looking to kill someone. i think cops are in a high stressed job to begin with and if your nypd you are underpaid and under appreciated. i think that they need more training and better morale in the nypd but its hard to do when you have a commisioner that is so easy to condemn you before even hearing the police officers story.

i agree especially since he didnt know the story for the police officer mouth it was still under the 48 hour rule. i think he should have shut his mouth untill all the facts were in.
