Spinoff to yesterdays post of the police officer that wasnt indicted...ATTN: POLICE OFFICER WIVES AND POLICE OFFICER FAMILIES

Original post by Cindy

After reading yesterdays post, it seems clear that people who do not have police officers in their family are very critical to this police officer not getting indicted or maybe police officers in general. My husband came home this morning after working 14 hours all night and told me about his grueling night. To hear such comments like a police officer shows stupidity when making a mistake or not having his wits is extremely upsetting to me when people know NOTHING about what goes into this job.

My question is: Do friends of yours who are not from a police officer family show negativity toward police or are they supportive since they are your friend?

Definately agree with you there! To have him come out before all the facts were in was just despicable in my eyes. I cannot stand him at all!

I don't think LI cops (especially Suffolk) are grossly overpaid.

I think NYPD cops are grossly UNDERPAID in comparison.

There's a difference.

well said Karen!!

I am jumping in late on this post. I think I have an interesting perspective to add. I am married to an NYPD officer and I am an attorney for the CIty of New York and what I do among other things is represent the members of NYPD for false arrest, imprisonment, wrongful death etc. The Diallo and Louima cases were settled by my office and the civil case in the latest shooting we will also handle.

No one can know what it is like being a Police Officer unless you are one. My husband works in a BAD neighborhood where everyone has a gun...EVERYONE. I don't know how my husband had the courage to risk his life everyday. Patroling the rooftops of the projects with your gun drawn is a questionable policy in my opinion but the cop was following procedure by doing so.

However, this does not change the fact t hat a family lost a son for no rason whatsoever expect t that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Thehy deserve compensation for that and they will get it....civilly. But as for a criminal indictment agaist the cop......NO. I thing the grand jury did the right thing!!

rlivings, I agree. This was an accident and there is no reason to treat this cop as a criminal. I can only imagine how he feels right now. WOW!!!!! your job sounds fascinating!!!

AGREE AGREE AGREE!!

I also agree about LI cops vs. NYPD. LI cops deserve every penny they make, but NYPD cops deserve the same.

Lastly, I have to say that Patrick works in Intelligence in one of the WORST neighborhoods in the city. He track crimes and gathers data for the entire borough he is in, and has a wealth of knowledge about the demographics. From listening to him, I can tell you that in these neighborhoods people are seldom in these 'off limits' or illegal places innocently, and they are usually not there for the first time. From very early ages most of the people in these low income/poverty stricken areas learn to try to get ahead in any way they can, and will kill to do it. No one understands this better than the officers who work in that neighborhood. If that man felt he was in danger, there was a damn good reason for it.
