Spinoff to yesterdays post of the police officer that wasnt indicted...ATTN: POLICE OFFICER WIVES AND POLICE OFFICER FAMILIES

Original post by Cindy

After reading yesterdays post, it seems clear that people who do not have police officers in their family are very critical to this police officer not getting indicted or maybe police officers in general. My husband came home this morning after working 14 hours all night and told me about his grueling night. To hear such comments like a police officer shows stupidity when making a mistake or not having his wits is extremely upsetting to me when people know NOTHING about what goes into this job.

My question is: Do friends of yours who are not from a police officer family show negativity toward police or are they supportive since they are your friend?

. But by you saying..when you hold a gun you must use your wits much better than the rest of us..that is implying that this officer didnt use his wits and just shot to kill for no reason. You nor anyone else knows that its like to be in that position so I think that its a little bit hard to say what others MUST do. And the stupidity part...seems to me your placing all the stupidity on this one police officer...which is totally unfair.

Of course you are entitled to your opionion and I always respect others peoples opinions, I just dont fully understand this one.

Noreen- I read what Michele was saying as the opposite, I do not think she implied he shot and killed for no reason, but rather he was wrong in that he made a mistake, he did make a mistake. I dont think IMO he should have been put on trial for murder but someone did die and that is why I said earlier IMO he should have more training or be on desk duty.

I agree Tammy. If someone accidentally kills someone in a car accident, are they charged with murder? No, so the same should be applied to ANY accident.

I NEVER said that cop should go on trial for murder. I do believe it was an accident- 110% an accident. But I don't think he should just go back to work as usual. In fact I would be afraid that he would put his life in jeaporady by being afraid to shot his gun if he really needed to.

Tammy understands what I mean. Perhaps I am not expressing myself well. Thank you Tammy for helping to explain what I mean much better than I am doing.

also, the question was not whether I would support a police officer that I know because of course I WOULD. The question was asked about this one cop, this one case.

You definately do not have to duck from me Karen because this is how I have felt about it from the beginning of it all. You have put my feelings and thoughts into words so well! Thank you!

Not for nothing, and this doesnt mean I am trying to take away any of the pain this family should or is feeling but...

theres the mother sobbing my son, my son..when it has even already been stated that the grandmother raised this boy..where was she before??? Now she seems to care oh so much?? I just dont get things like that...

Now I am ducking!

You guys made such a great point. It's like that one a couple of months back where the kids stole a car, then got involved in a cop chase, crashed the car and all inside died. One of the fathers actually said on TV 'I told him, you have to stop jacking cars for joyriding'... hello, you knew your kid was doing it, but yet you want the cop to fry for doing his job and trying to apprehend your criminal son.

I also feel that Michele is entitled to her opinion. It may not have come across the way she meant it in the other thread, but I think she clarified what she meant in this thread.

And that cop (from the recent shooting) had a one second lapse in care and now a kid is dead. Did he mean to kill that person- NO, but a mother is still in mourning so that is just plain sad to me.

I agree Michele, it is very sad. But, maybe his mourning mother should have thought about it more when she was raising her kid. Why didn't she know where he was at the time? Why didn't she teach him NOT to go up on the roof, where it's illegal to go? Half of these kids are raised to HATE cops from the start, not respect them or respect authority in general.

All these wailing, mourning mothers, aunts, uncles, cousins come out of the woodwork when some poor kid is shot. Usually they were shot for carrying a gun, or waving it around in some way, or being with a group of losers who are engaged in criminal activity. Then you hear about what a 'good kid' he or she was.

Give me a break. If he was such a good kid he wouldn't be doing that crap. Maybe these moms are crying more out of guilt that they didn't do a better job teaching their kids right from wrong.

I know that sounds harsh, but there is truth in it. The burden of guilt doesn't lie solely with the cop. It lies with the kid for choosing to go up on the roof, and lies with the family for not teaching him any better.

So yes, it's a very sad situation....for multiple reasons.

I guess people just jump on the cop right away because it's easier to hate cops than to open up a whole new issue about kids being raised (or not being raised) in high-crime areas.

Just my opinion. (Ducking from the flamethrower....)

Someone else who agrees with me!

Re: Spinoff to yesterdays post of the police officer that wasnt indicted...ATTN: POLICE OFFICER WIVES AND POLICE OFFICER FAMILIES

Honestly, ladies...I truly find some of your comments deeply troubling. How can we judge this kid's mother over what happened to her son? That is such a horrible, horrible thing to say. You know nothing of that woman or her kid that she now mourns.
How do we know that she didn't tell him NOT to go out that night? I mean, what 19 year old boy sits home on a Saturday night holding his Mommy's hand?? How is it her fault that he went out to a party with his friends only 'armed' with a stack of CD's????

I think the single saddest thing about this thread is how many of you are trying to place the blame on this kid and his poor mother. I venture to say that the cop who accidentally fired that bullet would himself be horrified to read some of these comments. I am absolutely certain that he is filled with saddness and remorse, since it's HIS SOUL that must forever carry the burden of having wrongfully killed a young man. I wouldn't even be surprised if he is wracked with regret over NOT taking a second longer to assess the situation before he fired.

Re: Spinoff to yesterdays post of the police officer that wasnt indicted...ATTN: POLICE OFFICER WIVES AND POLICE OFFICER FAMILIES

I am sure that he is wracking his brain...I am sure that he is deeply hurt and distraught by it all but I still stand by what I and other have said.

Not in any way am I disrespecting ANYONES opinion here at all but...once again..if you have an officer in your family or you have been one yourself its hard to talk about this at all. So I guess I was wrong questioning why other people werent answering this thread. I am not saying this boy imparticular but do you have any idea what kids in these areas are like?? What they do and is never reported..how they torment the cops?!?! I know first hand and this is why I feel so differently as does Karen and alot of others who responded in this way.

Going out that night is one thing but I am sure she didnt tell him..go play on the rooftops. This is just wrong no matter what the excuse..you shouldnt be on rooftops..no of course not a reason to be shot and killed but why was he up there??? Its just not the right place to be..and in my eyes, I would always teach my child not to get himself into situations like these for this exact reason. I also noticed that when responding, no one said we were talking about only this child when it came to parents not raising their children the right way. Many parents and there is no way anyone can 100% deny this, do not care to raise their child. This mother imparticular admitted herself that his grandmother raised him...why??? And like Karen has said..when something like this happens...again not only this situation, but when something like this happens 34874 relatives come out of the woodwork and cry their hearts out on tv. I am not doubting their pain or hurt but I too believe that it is a bit of guilt thrown in there as well. Maybe if they raised their child the right way, maybe just maybe we wouldnt hear about this like we have.

Not for nothing, but there is a reason why it is legal for cops to have their guns drawn on rooftops..what do you think it is? Do you think it is because whenever they go up there they find fun loving children meaning no harm at all? I totally beg to differ. We all know that there are kids out there who make the wrong choices, even much younger ones than this boy was, and who does that reflect?? In my eyes, the parents.

If you could hear only one story my dad has told us about kids, I mean like little kids like 10 years old in those areas, it may make you understand a little more where we are coming from. I know that I wasnt personally placing blame on this child alone...but I do stick to my 'guns' and say..if he werent up there in the first place, this wouldnt have happened. Its a vicious cycle and in my little, meaningless opinion if they had a better upbringing we wouldnt even be discussing this right now.

Noreen, I'm not going to debate point for point with you, b/c I understand how passionate you are about the issue.

However, this Timothy kid in particular NEVER made it to the rooftop! That is a fact! So, it's not as if he was up there carousing and causing trouble, like everyone is implying. It was the cop who was on the roof and the kids were in the stairwell, attempting to get to the roof, which [from everything I read] I understand as a very common and popular 'shortcut' in their neighborhood. Right or wrong - the roof is very commonly used as a shortcut.

You should absolutely stand behind whatever you say. I agree, and I feel the same way.

I just think it is important to have the facts straight, and not let one's passion over other stories they've heard in the past cloud one's judgement on every single police case. Because then, IMO, you [generic, not directed at you specifically, Noreen] would not be any different than the 'thugs' that are described in this thread as born-and-bred cop and authority haters. JMO.

Re: Spinoff to yesterdays post of the police officer that wasnt indicted...ATTN: POLICE OFFICER WIVES AND POLICE OFFICER FAMILIES

I don't have anyone in my family who is a cop and actually I don't even know anyone who is a cop but my FH was in the Marines and came home from Iraq after 8 mths out there and he is trying to become a cop as well. He knows the dangers that these men and women are exposed to everyday but he says it is what he wants to do and it is the only thing he wants to do. These people work with one the highest stress levels out there EVERYDAY!!!!! and NO!!!, they don't go looking for some guy to shoot at everyday either, but when you are at moment whether it could be you or them, I am very sorry but I would pull that trigger too. Of course, there are also different incidents which are unforgivable. two examples have been Rodney King and of couse Amadu Diallo. Cop all over risk their lives daily and are doing a job that not many would want to do, just like the men and women in our military are doing and they are doing it practically for peanuts!!!! All I have to say is that I will hopefull someday be the proud wife of a POLICE OFFICER!!!!!!!!!!!! BTW, if you ladies wouldn't mind answering this, what deparment do your DH/FH work in?
Nassau, Suffolk, or NYPD?

My entire family...NYPD..

Claud as you have said..Im not going point by point with you either because this is something that I am so passionate about and that will never change.

But I will say this..I am not using one bad experience to make any judgements on anything. First off its so much more than one bad experience, secondly I believe that no one still knows the full story and third sometimes going back and forth doesnt make a difference..everyone is going to stick to their own opinions.

I dont think it is making anything better going back and forth either. My feelings also are very passionate about this subject and I will ALWAYS stand behind them. I feel it really takes to live your life touched closely by an officer to truly know the feelings me and others are trying to get across. For that, I think nothing good is going to come out of going back and forth....

Wow!!!! I can't believe he has to go through all that stuff. Thank God he is in a quieter precint like you said. FH jokes w/me that if he becomes a cop (hopefull, he is still waiting to hear from Suffolk and is taking the State trooper exam next month) he is probably going to have some stories to tell me!!!!!!!

Regretfully it is sad that a life was lost. Bed-Sty is a bad area, Stevie is assigned there and I cannot tell you how many times his life was put in jeapordy just by going on the roof and he is a fireman. He has encountered many unsavory individuals and has seen some very bad things.

I'm sure this officer feel remorse regarding the events that took place. He has to live with it and I'm sure he is in his own private h&ll.

God bless them all for doing the job they do
