Spinoff to yesterdays post of the police officer that wasnt indicted...ATTN: POLICE OFFICER WIVES AND POLICE OFFICER FAMILIES
Original post by Cindy
After reading yesterdays post, it seems clear that people who do not have police officers in their family are very critical to this police officer not getting indicted or maybe police officers in general. My husband came home this morning after working 14 hours all night and told me about his grueling night. To hear such comments like a police officer shows stupidity when making a mistake or not having his wits is extremely upsetting to me when people know NOTHING about what goes into this job.
My question is: Do friends of yours who are not from a police officer family show negativity toward police or are they supportive since they are your friend?

I put this post up because I have never experienced negativity about police officers from friends. If they do have any ill feelings, they have had enough respect for me to not let me hear or read them speak hurtfully about what my husband's occupation is. I consider plenty of my husband's co- workers/friends my friends also. If any one of them was in the situation as this police officer who wasnt indicted, my god, I would not call it an act of 'stupidity' or not having his wits about him. I was very surprised to hear someone I knew write this when they KNEW I was going to read this, especially when they know nothing of what goes into this stressful job. I was shocked. I just wanted to know if others have experienced this.
It is unfortunate that we have to deal with that type of ignorance, but it comes with being in a cop family I guess. People try to speak about something they know nothing about. It is just something that you have to take with a grain of salt and and forget about it.

My DH is an FDNY lieutenant and he summed up why he believes cops have the harder job of the two in a few sentences: 'When people see me coming, they're happy to see me. Not the case for cops, they never know what they're going to get.'
Ain't that the truth? I never thought of how it applied when they were off-duty as well which is something this thread made me think about. Everyone looks at firefighters as heroes (and they are, I am in no way discounting what my DH and the rest of the Bravest do) but not everyone loves a cop, some people hate them, hate them either because they know their own lifestyle is...well, not on the 'up and up' or because they have been the victim of a bad cop - real or perceived. Or know someone who has been wronged by a cop, or thinks they know someone who has been wronged or think cops write too many tickets or think that they (cops) all 'get off' on the power trip. Whatever the case for the anger, they go into their job every single day with that hanging over their heads, before the day even begins.

It surprises me how most of us responding are the families of police officers or firefighters even though the post was directed towards us.
I thought a lot more people would respond to this post talking about the respect they have for officers? HMMM

giving out extra tickets does not increase your salary not saying that to sound mean but it doesnt matter how many tix you give out, your check is your check
Tammy - That is what I dont understand. Why do people think the check is bigger with the amount of tickets? Some people speak about what they dont know first hand.
if i my Dh was payed by the amount of tickets he wrote we would be broke!!!!!!! he never writes tickets and think he still has the original ones he was issued when he got out of the academy lol

I responded.
But, I will dare to say (with absolutely NO offense meant by this)...you cannot have it both ways. Plenty of people on this thread have said that people who are NOT the wife/mother/sister/friend, etc. of a cop should not comment on what they know nothing about. Point taken.
That being said, you can't get upset or take it personal that more people aren't chiming in on this thread - especially since it was directed toward cop families specifically.

My entire family are cops. Both my grandfathers, my dad, 5 of my cousins. No one understands the life of a family police officer, unless you are in one. I have the utmost respect for cops and their families. I will leave it @ that. I could go off on this topic forever! God Bless all you who are families of cops!

Thanks for your input Claud. This whole thread was started by me due to the insensitivity of a post yesterday that was, let me say, totally unexpected, offensive and insensitive to me.

I agree with Cindy as I said...it was extremely hurtful and offensive and maybe if the person explained a little better, we would understand more. But there hasnt been further explanation on their part.

All I can say is it takes a special type of person to be married to a police officer
God Bless you all and may they always be safe
Michelle - It also takes a special type of person like you to marry a fireman
I must add, who alot of people forget, EMT's! These people save your life!!!!

Re: Spinoff to yesterdays post of the police officer that wasnt indicted...ATTN: POLICE OFFICER WIVES AND POLICE OFFICER FAMILIES
Cindy- I am very supportive when a Police Officer is hurt or has to shot to save his life. I 100% believe that all police (and fire fighters for that matter) have a right to be protected and do their jobs. And I also think that 99.9% of them do their jobs with dedication and take extreme care with their guns/authority. But when you carry a gun you have to do that. And that cop (from the recent shooting) had a one second lapse in care and now a kid is dead. Did he mean to kill that person- NO, but a mother is still in mourning so that is just plain sad to me. How is that anti-cop? I am very supportive of policer officers and would never think their job is easy! editted to add- that this thread was directed toward families of policer officers and I am not one of them so I didn't even read it until today. I NEVER meant to offend or upset ANYONE with my comments. Why would I be anti-cop anyway? The only people I have ever known who are anti-cop are people who get in trouble with the law- something I have never done. I think some people just think because I feel police officers (and anyone who carries a gun for a living) must keep their wits about them? How is that hurting or offensive? Most cops DO keep their wits during long day/night shifts but this one cop didn't. He shot his gun and a young man died. That is NOT meant to insult you or anyone else on this board or off the board. I am sorry if it hurt ANYONE's feeling. editted to add: my words were totally not meant to insult a friend Cindy so I publically apologize for that since it did.

Michele - Nobody said you were anti cop. It was your comment that struck a nerve. My point is, how do you call it stupidity? How can you say that? Or that this officer didnt have his wits about him? I think that is the part that is not understood. This can happen to anyone. You make the split decision and it could be a mistake. The mistake could be you lose your life or it could end up like this situation. This could happen to alot of my friends and I would not call it an act of stupidity.....That is the part that makes it sound like your very judgemental.

Maybe you are taking my words wrong. IMO it is stupid that a kid died for no reason. I think, correct me, if I am wrong, that instint is part of being a cop. They have to assess a situation quickly, made a judgement then act. That is keeping their wits about them. This cop acted and killed a person for no reason thus he didn't keep his wits about him. And it is sad IMO- both lives are now changed for that. That is not anti-cop at all. Again, my comments are not meant to sound like I do not respect cops. The question was about this one situation and my answer was about this one situation only. Re: sounding judgemental. I think everyone is making a judgement about this situation. No matter what your opinion it is a judgement on our parts.

I think most cops are under paid. I have respect for those who respect me, not the ones that are Machismo about being a cop.
I think it sucks that most cops have to deal with the **** they deal with every day. Personally cops should recieve even more training. I think cops are scared for their lives when they go into certain high crime areas. They have families, friends and a life and in one second that can all be taken away from them.'
Its so easy to pull the trigger and I don think this cop did on purpose.

Re: Spinoff to yesterdays post of the police officer that wasnt indicted...ATTN: POLICE OFFICER WIVES AND POLICE OFFICER FAMILIES
I think the whole thing is plain sad. A young boy lost his life for no reason. I am not saying the cop meant to kill someone but when you hold a gun you must use your witts much better than the rest of us. You are held to a higher standard of care IMO. There are no words to justify this lose of life. It is just plain stupidity. (MICHELE31)
This is what you said in the last thread that I started and although I can kind of understand what you are saying and I in no way think that you are a bad person or one who judges things harshly, I still think your words were hurtful to some.
Yes it is sad for this family, of course. But by you saying..when you hold a gun you must use your wits much better than the rest of us..that is implying that this officer didnt use his wits and just shot to kill for no reason. You nor anyone else knows that its like to be in that position so I think that its a little bit hard to say what others MUST do. And the stupidity part...seems to me your placing all the stupidity on this one police officer...which is totally unfair.
Of course you are entitled to your opionion and I always respect others peoples opinions, I just dont fully understand this one.
