SPINOFF: Would you/Do you ever spank your children?
Original post by marymoon
I don't think I could do this. Violence begats violence. Also many parnets hit their childen out of anger..and even if that's nt WHY you're hitting them, often when you spank children you WILL be angry, and they'll associate that and hit people when they are angry..that's my take

I think used appropriately and not often is fine. DH and I discussed it and spanking will be used as punishment if needed. Too many parents are too lenient these days

I won't spank my children. I was never spanked, and I respected my parents. If I did something wrong (and boy at times did I) they would take away a privelege, like watching Laverne and Shirley and Happy Days, which was torture to me.
My parents were pretty strict too. If I didn't do my chores (like vacuum or clean my room or polish the furniture) I wouldn't be allowed out one afternoon with my friends.
Wait I do remember getting spanked once - I was about to wrap my hand on this pole in my aunt's basement where the steam heat came from. My dad whacked me out of the way but I still touched the pole and blistered my hand. I guess that doesn't really count as spanking though.

Spankings kept me inline!!! (I'm not talking beatings.) Looking back at it, I know it wasn't something my mom wanted to do, but it worked. I got the wooden spoon on the arse a few time too, but eventually all my mom had to do was open the squeaky draw where she kept them and my sister and I changed out tune.

yes...it was the fear that kept me inline...I mouthed off to my dad ONCE when I was 13...said 'Up Yours' to him.....he ran down the stairs and smacked me in my face...never mouthed off again. And when I got caught lying...they took away my private phone line

I think that spanking is the final straw. If they get out of hand you can easily talk to your child and warn them...if they continue to do it then....POW POW!!!
I was only hit once in my life by my mother...it was from hiding from her in the store....buy when she found me she was angry she beat me right there in the store. And wouldn't you know it...a lady said to her. ' You know, you shouldn't hit your child' My mother told her shut the ---- up before I hit you too. Ha...oh memories...
Holy Crap- Good for her!! That's good stuff!

I think a spanking once and again is appropriate. Beating a child out of anger, no ... Slapping a hand or a tush, yes ...
I agree.

No, I wont. While I dont think a spanking may hurt a child that much. I truly cant see why one would. I dont want to teach my children that they should be hurt for being bad. If a child does something wrong, you should correct the behavior. It's like saying, oh a little pain will teach them..I cant fathom the thought.

I think its OK to give a little smack on the hand or the butt if the child is really misbehaving, but I dont agree that you should beat the child!
Come on all you ladies from Italian families, you know you have all been spanked with the wooden spoon
When I worked for the Peds office, I remember seeing this 6 year old repeatedly smack his mother in the face(and HARD) because she wouldnt let him play with one of the toys that was there..You know what she did? She was like 'Oh Matthew, you know that hurts mommy when you do that' in this calm, sing-song voice. I was thinking to myself, I would give that kid a smack that he would NEVER forget if my kid did that to me! And if I would have done that to my mom, I would have gotten a beating! I cant stand some of this new age child rearing BS that they push on you. No wonder there are so many bratty kids these days! JMO

Something I find funny too is when a kid is young, say 3-5 and they are playing with other kids, say they hit the other kid...you always hear parents telling them ' NO HITTING' ....The kids probably have no idea what they are doing wrong if they have ever been spanked for doing something. They see it as 'copying' the way to correct someone.

I still, don't understand, why hitting is even an option, why does it have to go there?? Why is it okay? I still to this very day - remember the fear I had for my father - why would you want that for your own children? I guess I will never understand why some people think that a slap is okay.

I totally agree with you. Can you imagine we used this kind of thinking in all aspects of life. Whenever anyone one does something wrong we give them a little slap

A spanking - yes .......and knock dow beating - NO .......i'm sorry but I see WAY too many little kids who are completely out of control w/ parents that are like 'now now, that's not nice, blah blah' - I'm sorry, but you can not reason w/ a 2 year old !

Re: SPINOFF: Would you/Do you ever spank your children?
there is a difference between discipline and abuse. Some kids dont listen to the calm or even raised voice. And honestly from my observation, the kids who get a spanking are usually more well behaved than the ones who dont know what a spanking is. Some say its because of fear..fear occursonly if you are abusing a child if you spank responsibly..kids will understand its chastising them for something they did wrong. Usually this comes from a balance of chastising them when they do something worng but also praising them when they do something good.

YES, you can reason with a 2 year old, but it takes time and patience...I also think if a child is that out of control then the parents are doing something wrong, and a smack sure aint gonna fix it.
People think 1-3 years olds completly understand right and wrong, they do not. They understand instant gratification first and foremost, so sometimes even if they know YOU dont like them to do something, they cannot remember that or even comprehend you getting angry...they only think of themselves and thats instinct.
Don't get me wrong, I dont wanna judge anyone, I just truly dont feel even a light smack is neccesary in correcting something a parent doesnt like.

I don't believe in spanking your children. These days if a teacher or school finds out it is reported to DSS for any little thing.
