SPINOFF: Would you/Do you ever spank your children?

SPINOFF: Would you/Do you ever spank your children?

I don't think I could do this. Violence begats violence. Also many parnets hit their childen out of anger..and even if that's nt WHY you're hitting them, often when you spank children you WILL be angry, and they'll associate that and hit people when they are angry..that's my take

no, i don't think i will. i don't see how it corrects the bad behaviour.

I think a spanking once and again is appropriate.
Beating a child out of anger, no ...
Slapping a hand or a tush, yes ...

I think that spanking is the final straw. If they get out of hand you can easily talk to your child and warn them...if they continue to do it then....POW POW!!!

I was only hit once in my life by my mother...it was from hiding from her in the store....buy when she found me she was angry she beat me right there in the store. And wouldn't you know it...a lady said to her. ' You know, you shouldn't hit your child' My mother told her shut the ---- up before I hit you too. Ha...oh memories...

Spanking - yes
A$$ whupping - No, I hope I am never angry enough to use a belt or other items to hit a child

I got one a$$ whupping when i was 13 and it is something that I will never forget, especially since it was something that my little brother lied on me about. I just remember my father chasing me around the house with a belt.

I think I got off pretty easy bc I had cousins who were hit all the time for the stupidest things like bedwetting.

i agree with the occasional smack... The child would have had to have done something really bad though.

No - Never - I have a 6 year old son and I could never put my hands on him in anger.
When I get REALLY mad - I always walk away and gain my composure.
I, too, am a talker -
I was hit as a child - it doesn't work - I feared my father - I would never want my son to fear me, I want him to be able to come to me with any problem, without reservation.

Yep..even asa child, I was always scared and I felt like my dad wasn't hitting me to punish me, but that he was taking his anger out on me..and my dad is a HUGE guy, and I'm very small..and he could really kick the crap out of me without trying, and then he'd think I was 'Acting' when I'd go flying across the room

I was never spanked and I don't intend on spanking either.

I was always taught in my child development classes that hitting only teaches a child that you are bigger and stronger than them but it doesn't correct the behavior.

I recently babysat/watched my 6 and 9 year old cousins for 6 days while my aunt and uncle were away. I don't condone hitting but WOW I really saw how frustrating kids can be. There were points where I wanted to ring their little necks, and I have a lot of patience!! I have done this for the past 3 years and this may have been the worst year! I guess that is why God gives us infants...we can build up our patience level!

I too, was hit as a child. It didnt work on me, but it put me in fear of my father. I try not to so hard not to spank my kids. I do every blue moon. But it doesnt have an effect on them one way or another. My little one looks at me after and smiles. SO I do not think it has an effect on him at all. I walk away and after he sulks I come back and everything is back to normal

Spanking is ok..its the beat downs that are abuse. You can spank without inflicting bruises ets. But you have to know your limitations since it can get out of hand quickly.

My Child Psychology professor came up with a good rule of thumb. If you are angry, hitting the child will only anger them and possibly make them fear you (the violence begets violence argument). However, if the child is endangering him or herself or someone else and the parent is not visibly angry, then a spanking of some sort (open handed, not with any other 'instruments') is seemingly appropriate.

Spanking would be the last straw for me, and only used if my child was putting him or herself in danger. I was spanked a couple of times as a kid, and it only taught me to be afraid of my dad, not that what I was doing is wrong.

Re: SPINOFF: Would you/Do you ever spank your children?

We had a three strikes rule in my house growing up that worked very well. Strike one- I will hit you with the belt if you do not stop the behavior Strike Two- I'm taking off the belt and Strike Three- The Belt. You had two opportunities to stop the behavior. It was more of a threat of the belt that stopped me from the behavior. I almost never got it.

For me with my children, I think a slight tap on the tush is okay now and again. No beatings, no belts.
