What the heck is St. Joseph's Day, and what is a St. Joseph's cake?

..obviously not Catholic .

St. Joseph is the Patron Saint of Sicily. its a big Italian tradition to give thanks to St. Joseph for preventing a famine in Sicily during the middle ages.

the traditional meal is Pasta con Sarde & the dessert is called St. Josephs pastry. i am 99% sure that its only made in bakeries for this feast day.

Some pastry shops will make sfingi and zeppoli year round but not all of them. Being 1/2 Sicilian I really should eat the Pasta con sarde but I gave up pasta for Lent and I hate sardines...I guess that's where the barese comes in LOL

Yes, I am and very proud of it. What's funny is that my ex-husband is 1/2 Sicilan and 1/2 Barese too so my sons are the same exact mix.

I know quite a few people who are Barese, in fact, the woman I work with is Barese too so we get along great. Also, my hairdresser is Barese and the owner of the shop is too. Everytime I go in to get my hair colored he mentions the fact that I am Barese (never mentions the Sicilain part) to anyone who is also Barese. There are quite a few of us in my neighborhood, I live in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn and it is still very Italian.

I don't know about you but even though I enjoy Sicilian cooking I seem to enjoy the Barese cooking my mom did better and I have followed in her footsteps.
Glad to know you and if you ever need a little help do not hesitate to ask me.

!t Joseph's day is also father's day in italy!

My birthday was on the 17th and since I was a kid I've always asked for Sfinge & Zeppole instead of a birthday cake! Soooo yummy
