STD's --to get or not to get

STD's --to get or not to get

Okay, here's the thing: I personally vowed never to sent them because I never fell into the whole concept. I never thought my mom would want to send them either. I know a lot of girls do send them and that's fine--I don't want this post to be taken offensively--but I just never wanted to sent them. Now, my mom really wants to send them b/c it's a holiday weekend and she's worried people will make plans to go away. But, it's Memorial Day weekend, not like Thanksgiving or anything. I said I'd rather send out invitations like 2-3 months in advance than send STDs, but I'm having a hard time convincing her. She thinks my idea is tackier than the STDs. What do you guys think? I mean, how early do peole really make plans for Memorial Day weekend?
Thanks!

Some people have family traditions every year on that weekend. I have the same day as you and I got scared because I know that alot of people make advanced plans for that weekend. I did send out STD but its up to you if you want to.

I was in the same situation as you - as I am the anti-bride. I thought STD's were stupid, but then realized that we weren't going to have an engagement party and we have a few (not many) OOT guests. We're not on a Holiday weekend, but we finally decided to send out STD's about six months in advance (we're sending them out in August) just as a reminder, that 'yes, we're still getting married, here's some info.'

I got my STD's - MAGNETS b/c people can shove them on their fridge rather than paper where people throw out, from www.creativemontage.com - it's a cheap design fee and it's a very inexpensive print fee. Well worth it in my opinion.

For $100 - go ahead and knock yourself out. It'll put your mom at ease w/the OOT guests, and you can throw out a 'hey, don't forget to save up for our wedding and give us a big fat check!' - J/k!

I wasn't going to send out STD's either. But I decided on doing it. I'm not getting married on a holiday weekend but I am getting married on a Friday. So, I figured I'd send them out just to give people the heads up to hopefully leave work early. Also, I thought the magnet STD's were a cute idea.
If you don't want to send them out then don't. It's really your decision.

since it's a holiday, i think it's a good idea. i wasn't crazy about doing it myself, but it just makes sense - lots of people tend to go out of town that weekend. and my family's coming in from out of town, so the longer they have for travel plans, the better.

I was also against the whole STD thing -- I figured, hey, they get an invitation and if they can't come, they can't come, while most of the people you're close to will know the date.

But then I decided since I'm getting married in the Hamptons during the summer, if people are going to stay out there they need to make arrangements in advance. So, I'm going to send out little brochures (on nice paper) with a list of hotels and things to do, places to eat, etc., telling them to make arrangements ASAP. I figure it's not so much a STD and I wouldn't put all this stuff on the invite.

We are getting married the Saturday before a very heavily traveled week - President's week. Many families go away then. In fact, two of my friends were waiting for me to tell them my date so they could make plane reservations for the next day. Considering that I am a teacher and many of my friends are as well, STDs are sort of necessary. I certainly cannot call everyone to ask them if my date is ok for them. If people can come, GREAT! If not, oh well. We are hoping for 'no's' anyway.

I wasn't going to send them either. But I realized that my wedding is the Sat. following July 4 so as per advice from our fellow LIW board members I decided to send them out. I will be ordering mine within the next week.

I know a lot of people who go away for Memorial Day weekend, esp after being cooped up at home all winter. It's nice to get away. I would send them out, but nothing fancy. Just a simple print out on some nice paper should do the trick. It lets your guests know that you really want them there, you're giving them so much notice.

I think it is a good idea to give people advance notice. I am doing them anyway, but I would definitely do them if I was getting married Memorial Day weekend.

I am deciding between doing them and not doing them too- dont most people find out through word of mouth- especially family and close friends? WOuldnt they know already??? this is my dilemma,,I know i kind of stole your post- sorry...but it is kind of related...

I'm not bothering with it. No particular reason, really.

IMO- you should. Alot of people do stuff memorial day weekend. Plus, I think it is a nice touch. Christine was right- for $100 it is well worth it. Creative montage (she has the link above) really does have beautiful work- that is where we are planning to get them from (magnets too)

we are getting married labor day weekend and have alot of oot's- we'll probably send them 6-9 months in advance AT LEAST it is a nice courtesy for guests who need to make travel arrangements

I'm not planning on sending them out because my FH doesn't like the idea but if you are doing a holiday weekend then you might want to. I know my family goes away to open our summer house every Memorial Day and I think alot of people do make plans to travel that weekend.

I feel like most people would know by word of mouth. Most of FIL's invites are 1st degree relatives (aunts, uncles, cousins) because theire family is just so huge. So, I feel like they should really know. But, if I'm wrong and we don't meet our minimum, my mom will kill me with an 'I told you so' I'll never live down. (Parents and FILs paying.)

I can udnerstand you not wanting to send them, but I think you DEFINITELY should. I wouldn;t say that except in the case of a holiday weekend. MANY people make plans for holiday weekends WAY in advance. And there may veen be other weddings (I already have plans for labor day weekend...FHs's cousin's wedding), and if they other wedding send a STD and you didn't, you might be out of luck with the 2nd degree relatives. it doens't have to be costly, and you can send something really plain. My neighbor just sent a very plain magnet with just words, and FH's cousin sent a small card with just words printed on the computer. We taped it to the frigde and voila. Even though we knew they were getting married labor day wekeend, this helped us solidofy the date and it's on the fridge to we'll remember it more readily if we try to make plans.

I think since it's a holiday weekend you should suck it up and do it. JMO

Re: STD's --to get or not to get

I have the same date as you, and I am sending them. I originally was undecided, but then my date was July 30. When I changed it to memorial day weekend, my mom and others started voicing concerns that people go away that weekend, so I decided it was a good idea to have them. All of FH guests are OOT so I am going to include hotel information with them. I will be sending them out right after memorial day of this year, so it will be about a year before.
