I am ready to elope....I am still looking for that perfect venue and we are having so much difficulty. My fiance and I both want a venue that doesn't feel like a catering hall. We originally wanted a barn wedding, but abandoned that idea once we realized how costly it was. We have an approximate guest list of 200 (huge families), so we need to keep the cost to 100 per head (w tax etc). I am going to look at Coindre Hall and De Seversky, but the prices I was quoted are out of budget and I don't think they negotiate. I am so stressed and ready to give up....I never realized wedding planning would be this hard.

Re: Still searching for a venue....Help!!!!!
well, are you set on a summer wedding? if you were more flexible with the date it will definitely be easier to keep it under 100 per head..
try looking at flowerfield in st. james. it has a gorgeous atrium that looks like NOTHING i've ever seen at a catering hall... if you got married there off-season it would definitely be cheaper, and i don't think you'd be missing out on anything by having a wedding inside because the atrium is so beautiful and has an outdoors feel. they will negotiate with you.

They will negotiate, but honestly I don't think they'll bring it to under $100/pp. I was booked there prior to where I got married and they price we got was unbelieveable - but we had they fact that my brother got married at Land's End (same catering co) and we haggled and bargained and told them it's this or we're walking and we got way down. But still over $100. Maybe for a Thurs night in Feb?
But what if you tried Bourne Mansion in January? I heard they just got rid of their site fee.

Why don't you look into Smithtown Country Club. That is where we are going and we had a lot of the same concerns as you. I wanted a barn wedding too.. I hate halls, it just isn't our style. We wanted laid back not fancy. Smithtown is such a good price, the best we saw! It is laid back and they are greeeeeat at helping you customize the wedding to your personal style. We are adding a bbq style station with like buckets of all different types of beer at the cocktail hour. They were helping us suggest stuff like that.
The only thing is 200 is the most you can have. We also have 200 but are going to make it work.
All the other Lessings places are really well priced also.

I was also going for the rustic look and I ended up at the Riviera in Massapequa after finding out how expensive a barn or winery would be They would be right around your price point, and they might even negotiate since you have so many people. I'm not sure how comfortable 200 people would be there, but my BM says they do it all the time! It has a very rustic, barn type feel to it.

Re: Still searching for a venue....Help!!!!!
I wanted a place with high ceilings, windows and an outside terrace and the Hamlet Willow Creek in Mount Sinai is exactly what we wanted. It was the last place we looked at and frankly I didn't think we would like it but we LOVED it. Our guest list was 215 invited and we had a 150 min required. Try to go visit. The pics online don't do the place justice!!

I know how frustrating finding a venue can be!
I really wanted a venue with a lot of charm and fell in love with Danfords Hotel & Marina in Port Jefferson, NY. The people are amazing to work with too.
The only catch, the main room will probably only hold a max of 150... which may be too small for you.
Good luck!!

Thanks everyone!!! i will check out these places. I looked at Riviera already and thought it was too small for our guest list but I did like it and they are very reasonable.

Re: Still searching for a venue....Help!!!!!
what about the Royalton? It's not a barn feel, but it def doesn't look like a catering hall. We were able to negotiate and got them down to $128 pp for a Friday night for a 150 guarantee. A Sunday may be cheaper if you're willing to be flexible. Also try Timber Point Country Club. It's actually really nice and you can't beat the price!!
Also, one thing I learned when looking at halls is the more people you guarantee, the more they are willing to cut the price. So, if you think you're going to have 200, they might be able to do something with the price if you guarantee that amount.

are you specific about the date/day of the affair? I know Friday's and Sunday's will be less than saturday's. Many places will also be willing to work with you. Don't give up you'll find the place of your dreams and make it your own

Re: Still searching for a venue....Help!!!!!
Did you talk to Lessings, they do Martha Clara. No idea what the price is on it though. But there were a lot of suggestions for Lessings places so I would suggest talking to them. They also have the Three VIllage Inn which is really pretty and different. They also took over catering at Dering Harbor on Shelter Island. They have a lot of different options. I would make an appointment to talk with them about several of them and see if you can find what is right for what you want and your price point.
You could do a destination wedding... my friend from MA got married outside Boston at a beautiful barn called Brooksby Farm. Another friend who is actually from NY did a destination wedding in VT at a barn. I wasn't there so not sure the name of it, but I am sure there are tons of options up there.

I don't have any location suggestions, but I do know that Saturday mornings (12-6) are cheaper than evenings. We're at a hall, but the price pp was under $100 with taxes etc. but over that if our wedding was from 6-12 midnight.

Re: Still searching for a venue....Help!!!!!
if you are flexible with your fate, de seversky will give you a discount for booking a date under 8 months away but otherwise, they didn't seem to negotiate at all! Their pricing actually stays the same all year and wasnt much of a difference between saturdays and fri/sun.
They had a cancellation when we booked but we would've had to plan the wedding in 6 mons and we passed but we would've saved a lot of money.
Good luck! I love that de seversky doesn't feel like a catering hall. I initially wanted a tented wedding but also had to give it up after pricing everything
