Stolen from 08: Let's vote early for the President

Original post by MaureenM618

I just thought it would be interesting to see who would win if just our LIW brides voted....No drama please! You can vote anonymously or if you wish write a little about why you would vote for that person without putting down the other candidate to educate some of us that don't keep up with the election.

I'm voting for McCain! Did everyone see his VP pick today??

yup! and she lacks experience as well..so i feel like the argument about obama not being experienced falls short when the other candidates running mate was only in office for 2 years i believe..

Yea, she has only 2 years experience because she was elected Governor in 2006. But, she has done a lot for Alaska since then and I truly think she is a great asset. She has provided a lot of relief to Alaskans regarding high gas prices as well as being very conscious of the environment.

I personally think a President is in need of much experience. A VP is just an asset to the President. They are sometimes fresh faces which is okay. A presidential candidate should not be a fresh face and yet a man or woman of many years of experience as he or she is leading the country.

Age does not equate intelligence or experience. There are just so many things wrong with this country right now and I truly feel that we need a huge change in administration. Not only is the WH ready for such change, but America is as well. It is 2008, the Presidency should reflect the changing socio-economic climate in America. Sometimes we need to take a risk in order to reap the most benefits. But I am confident in my choice and I truly believe that a change like this would be beyond huge for America.

this thread is seriously testing my self-control. i am biting my tongue on so many levels, but this i need to say:

while we were in france, we had the chance to talk politics over dinner with some teachers from reims, and they were absolutely horrified to hear the voter turnout numbers in the united states. they were baffled when i told them it's just over half. in the last french election, 85% of the people voted.

regardless of whether or not you choose to vote in the election, whoever gets into office is going to take action funded by your tax dollars, so we are all responsible for their choices. the US election is something that impacts the entire world. it is your duty as a citizen to have a voice.

Apathy gets you nowhere. If you choose not to vote, then don't complain about the President, the administration or his policies. You had the chance to speak your mind (and NOT VOTING is not making a statement about your politics). I won't even get into the long-winded history lecture on womens' suffrage and Lucy Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton and starvation boycotts and the like that enabled us women to vote. It annoys the pisss out of me that people think this way.

While I agree that is is extremely important to vote, I also feel that a person should feel strongly towards the candidate they choose. They should feel in their heart that this person is the better candidate to run the country and they should be well informed on the persons beliefs. When the Bush-Kerry elections were up, I did not vote even though I got a lot of h*ll from my family and friends for it. My uncle even walked me up to the polls... When I was next in line I refused go in the booth.... He told me 'oh just vote for anyone if you don't like either' and I completely disagreed with that sentiment....I know voting is important but what is someone supposed to do when they have no faith in either candidate? While I know I cannot complain with the things Bush does because I did not vote I also have the satisfaction of saying I did NOT vote for him! That day I was at the polls and my uncle was forcing me I was going to pick Bush just to shut everyone up and I am so glad I did not! At the same token, I could not in good conscience vote for Kerry as I did not trust him either...

I find myself in a similar situation this term... While my dislike for these candidates do not run as deep as they did in the previous term, I am not super confident in either Obama or McCain... This time around I at LEAST have a SLIGHT preference to one but that still does not make me feel confident in the person I am choosing! I don't know, maybe I am making a bigger deal over this that I should be but it is just really important to me that I am making the right choice for me. I rather make no choice than the wrong one IMO. Sorry for this long rant! This is one of the few things I feel really strongly on!

I understand what you are saying but if nobody voted because they weren't 100% sure of either candidate what would happen ya know? Im not completely for either candidate but because of my preference I will vote so that my voice is heard and in hopes that the candidate I don't like might not get elected. At least I can say I had a part in that. At this point, it is sad to say but it is going for the lesser of two evils for many.

I understand where you are coming from. But as Americans we have a privilege to select our President. I think that is amazing and we are lucky to have that privilege. I have a Parent who fled a communist country and she is delighted that she is able to vote- another reason to love this country.

Now, I know you say that you have the satisfaction of saying that you didn't vote for Bush. What if you voted for Kerry? Maybe you and a few others who thought like yourself were the ones who prevented Kerry from getting elected into office. Maybe if you voted, we wouldn't be in this mess today. Sorry if this sounds harsh but it's a little food for thought.

People should be proud and feel privileged. We have so many rights that we take for granted. Being a first generation American makes me realize how lucky I am based on the stories my Mom used to tell me about her country. I would never ever give up my chance to vote. Always do research and read both candidates policies. Whoever you agree with the most should get your vote IMO.

i can totally empathize with feeling torn over the choice. sometimes i have more negative things to say than positive about obama, and that's a whole separate issue, but in the end i will evaluate and make the best choice i can.

the most important thing is not to let other people make the choice for you. your vote is important.

Actually I hated Kerry too so I am glad that I did not vote for him either! As much as I am NOT a fan of our current president, I think people blame him for EVERYTHING, even things he has no control over and I don't find it fair at all..While our country is far from perfect, I don't think it is as messed up as everyone makes it out to be.. We could be living in a LOT worse conditions IMO....

I know we do have it good and I know am lucky to live in this country but I really REALLY disliked both candidates last time... There was no lesser of two evils for me.. It was evil on both fronts! I don't think Kerry could have done a better job than Bush but I don't know he would have done a worse job either..

While I feel I am more informed this time around and I know I am going to vote, I still do not regret not voting last time... I was younger, absolutely uninformed, and I really had no clue! I think I am a little bit wiser and I have a better grasp of what our country needs right now!! While I still feel voting is very important, I will NEVER vote for someone until I know what they stand for.. This is why I am trying to pay more attention and watch more debates!

Thanks for the input. It is always interesting to hear others points of view!

Obama...all the way. Whether or not someone (anyone) can change this country in 4-8 years is def a worry, but why be a defeatest and say that we cannot start the change?
Dont you remember how everyone thought young Bill Clinton didnt have enough experience to be prez? In his term we had peace, a balanced buget and a surplus...
Change is possible... We just have to want it and believe it.
Civil Rights, the Womens Movement, Hippies in the 60's... things HAVE changed in this world! It is possible. We dont need to be afraid.

To all who want another view on healthcare... go rent Michael Moore's Sicko... It is scary. I have family who are doctors and insurance professionals in this country and completely agree with his view points... I highly recommend watching the movie...but be prepared to cry more than laugh:

'SiCKO' is a straight-from-the-heart portrait of the crazy and sometimes cruel U.S. health care system, told from the vantage of everyday people faced with extraordinary and bizarre challenges in their quest for basic health coverage.

In the tradition of Mark Twain or Will Rogers, 'SiCKO' uses humor to tell these compelling stories, leading the audience to conclude that an alternative system is the only possible answer.
