Student Loans-not exactly wedding related sorry, I just need help

Original post by tiff940

This is not exactly wedding related but I was wondering how much you guys pay in student loans. I have about $90,000 in student loans and wanted to know what my payments are going to be like (I havent started paying yet, thank goodness I wont until after the wedding because of grad school). If you dont mind sharing the total amount of loans, the montlhy payments, and the number of years I would greatly apprecaite it. I just dont know how people can pay $1500 in student loans, a mortgage, car payments, save for retirement, and start saving for kids?

I owe roughly 45K in federal loans and am also researching consolidation. i looked at nelnet which seems good but they didnt lower my interest rate too much so im still looking. i called nextstudent.com which gave me a much lower rate but i never heard of them so i dont know if its any good.

Has anyone heard of consolidating with NextStudent.com?

one thing i just found out about is that if you have any perkins loan and you are a teacher, officer, nurse, or medical technician you could qualify for loan forgiveness.

if your loans are federal, dont worry, your payments will be manageable. i was offered a monthly paymeny of $195, which i will probably pay much more than that towards my principle per month. i dont know anything about private loans though.

i have about 70K in student loans....about 30K of that is federal and i pay 210 a month which is a fixed monthly payment. the other loans are private and i pay 370 a month for the private loans. on private loans the interest rate is variable so it can go up (which it has already gone up for me)....so my payments will go up as interest rates change. but federal loans can be consolidated and you can get a very low fixed interest rate. but all in all at the moment i am paying about 600 per month for 70K in loans. i usually pay more each month for the federal loans but since we are saving for the wedding i have been paying the minimum the past few months. once you start paying you will find what is comfortable for you to pay extra towards and you will find a way to manage with other things ie: rent, car, insurance, etc.....it's expensive! but things will work out. i hate the loans, but i can't say that i regret the education that i have b/c of it. it will work out!

when i consolidated will nelnet i locked in a lower rate so 3.5% plus they told me after 1 year on time payments that drops to 2.5%

Plus i like that nelnet will not sell my loan to anyone else like salliemae does

GL never heard of nextstudent

You can only consolidate federal loans (subsidized and unsubsidized.) You can't consolidate private loans. I owe a lot more than that from law school so don't feel bad! I would say your payments will be close to $1,000 per month, but if they are all federal loans it will be less (private loans have a much higher interest rate).

You can consolidate private loans but the interest rates can be high so be careful.

Okay you ladies are making me feel so much better. I thought I would pay $1500 because I have so much. Keep the low numbers coming!!!

I have about 45k and I pay $260 a month in different loans....they are all consolidated but you can also pick a graduated loan program so your monthly payments at first are a little lower....then when you have the money you can switch your loan payment schedule so that you don't pay so much in the extra interest.
