Suffolk County House Hunting Help

Hi All, This must be the month for landlords to get possessed. My husband and I will soon be house hunting on LI, most likely in Suffolk. Since neither of us are from the area, I was hoping you could give us advice as to what towns are good. He is a fireman so we are flexible, only real requirement is a really good school district, since we have an 8 year old son. As always thank you for your help

Suffolk County House Hunting Help

Well, my fiance and I grew up in Suffolk County. The best school district there is Sachem School District. It's about 1/2 hour east from the Nassau County line. My fiance grew up in Lake Ronkonkoma, not Ronkonkoma, that's Connetquot School District, Centereach, Lake Grove, Holbrook, Holtsville, and I'm not sure if Bohemia is part of Sachem or not. These are all really good towns. Give it a shot. We'd be living somewhere in Suffolk County but we can't afford it. That's why we live in North Carolina. :) Oh, Smithtown and Port Jefferson are really nice, but very expensive. Our wedding is in Port Jefferson, but we could never afford to live there. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck!

Some of the better areas with excellent schools are in the Setauket and Stony Brook area. I believe that that is the Three Village School District, which is excellent. I grew up in Patchogue and attended Patchogue Medford schools, as have my children and now my granddaughter. There are some nice areas in Medford and the school district is very good, although I would not say the best. There are areas that I would stay away from, but your best bet is to get statistics from the state from whatever areas you are considering that show test scores, enrollment, teacher to student ratio, % of graduates, and % of graduates attending a 4 year college. There are many resources available to help you make your decisions. If the areas you are looking at have a chamber of commerce they will usually have info for you as well. Good luck.

Take a look at Newsday - the LI Newspaper www.newsday.com. On Friday they have a real estate section which features a different town each week. They give all sorts of statistics.

As a teacher, I have to disagree with Sachen being the best school district. I would say the best school districts in Suffolk County, in my opinion, are Three Village, Half Hollow Hills, Smithtown, and Commack. Of course, this is only my oppinion, based on what I have seen as a teacher. Any of these places are great to live in. Good luck to you! : )

Greenlawn and Centerport are in Harborfields SD and is very well known as being a good district. You can find houses in all price ranges too. Taxes might be high though - check it out

Suffolk County House Hunting Help

I just moved to Suffolk County 8 months ago. Since my husband and I are both from Queens, we were in the same boat as you in the beginning. We did not know much about any area on Long Island. We were house hunting for about 3 months until we found our home in Smithtown. We are also very concerned about school district; it was one of our first questions... We are in the Commack school district, which I have heard very good things about..(there are a few houses for sale right in my area!) Our realtor educated us about the areas, the school districts, whats hot and whats not. Some other areas we looked in were East Northport, Huntington, Port Jefferson, East Setauket. Almost every town has its own great parks, events, beaches, etc etc. Feel free to email me at [email protected]. I would LOVE to recommend my realtor, he is HONEST (beleive it or not), FUNNY, and great to work with. He will tell you HONESTLY whether OR NOT he thinks you should buy a certain house and why/why not. I would recommend him to anyone :) If anyone else would like to email me, feel free :) Anna

Three Village

Well I grew up in the Three Village area and so I'm partial, but I have to say that was always the best school district. Old Stony Brook, and Setauket are so pretty.

Half Hollow Hills is a great school district. I grew up in Dix Hills. It is pricey though. You can look for a house that has a Deer Park address, but is in the #5 school district and the price of the house and the taxes will be a lot cheaper!

I work in Manhattan right now, the game plan LOL, is for me not to work in Manhattan, and/or work around my husband's schedule, he is a fireman. He really prefers that when he have another child for me not to work full time, plus I would dread commuting to Manhattan from Suffolk
