have any of you been by Broadway mall lately?!! they have these things now called Sugar Bears, they are from Australia and were bred and brought here. Its like a combination of a kowala bear and kangaroo! but as soft as a chinchilla with the look of a chipmunk, and a really long tail!! ooo and it has opposable thumbs and is absolutely tiny!! they sleep in ur pocket and you can take them anywhere!!! im obsessed, but FH thinks they are too good to possibly be true. It is said they live to 15 years...but he doesnt believe it. Anyway, i am obsessed and wanted to share the info!!!!!

DH and I looked into getting one, but decided against it. They are super-needy and can actually die from lack of attention You have to carry it around in a pouch around your neck for hours on end and sometimes when it glides around, it sprinkles pee Super cute, but we have 3 chinchillas and are happy with them.

If you want a cute, fuzzy, affectionate and LOW maintenence pet, get a chinchilla.

I cam home and showed my FH their website and he said they were gross and freaky. He just didn't get it. I think you have to see them in person!

Haha, I kind of think they are gross and freaky too. They look so creepy to me, I don't know why. They kind of look like mini squirrels and I don't like squirrels!

how much are they?? fh and i want one lol

we were quoted $489. It only will cost u $34 a year to feed them he said. i know i want one too!!! FH said he wants to research them more and find out how they will do with my cats...then we will see! omg!! if u get one, i so want u to post pictures!!

I have a cat to and I asked him yesterday. He said that they are totally fine with cats. Since they are marsupials they do not smell like food to your cats and they will not attack them. When they come to deliver the sugar bears they actually come inside and begin the bonding between the sugar bear and your pets.

wait til after the holidays... and do extensive research..they might carries diseases...

No they have no known diseases so they never need shots or anything. Animal planet voted the the #1 perfect pet ! They are hypo-allergenic so they are perfect for everyone.

This is super sad and I really urge you not to patronize any establishment selling any pets! Here's a bit of advice. Cute or not, it's not fair to the animal at all:

Sugar gliders do not make good pets.

These inquisitive marsupials live in colonies. They are extremely territorial and spend most of their time in trees. Sugar gliders are nocturnal, which means they get active right when you want to sleep. They are messy and fussy eaters who require a highly specialized diet. Many veterinarians have no expertise in this exotic species. It is illegal to own sugar gliders in California and Pennsylvania.

People who purchase sugar gliders on a whim often quickly tire of these high-maintenance pets. Many languish in tiny cages; others die in the shuffle from one owner to the next. Some are simply dumped and left to die.

I totally agree. What happened to good old fashioned pets like dogs? I'll take my Jeter any day over those things!

Re: SUGAR BEARS!!!!! Alive and absolutely adorable!!

Another bit to consider (as you can tell, i'm extremely dismayed that this has come to NY and sad that anyone would fall for lies from exotic animal dealers):

Sugar Gliders are small marsupials who's native distribution is on the east coast of Australia, Tazmania, and parts of Indonesia. Their scientific name is Petarus Breviceps, which means 'short headed rope dancer.' Gliders can live up to 15 years in captivity but their life span in the wild is rarely more than 4 years. These animals live off of the sap of Acaica and Eucapyptus trees in rain forests. They also eat insects, honey dew, and pollen.

Suggies as they are sometimes called are considered pests in their native countries because they often raid trash cans, gardens and flowering trees in human-filled areas. Driven from their native habitat from deforestation, sugar gliders can often make a nuisance out of themselves by wrecking landscaped trees and flowers.

As pets, gliders are not for everyone. Until tamed, they bite and exhibit wild behavior. They are exotic, cannot be housebroken, and can inflict pain when they over-groom you and scrape at your skin as if it were tree bark. They are friendly and curious, but take a lot of care and a special diet. The Epidemic There is an Epidemic of unwanted and abandoned gliders. Because they are exotic pets, it takes a special person and family to dedicate themselves to taking care of these animals. All too often they are purchased 'on impulse' at trade shows, flea markets, and pet stores. Breeders and sellers of these animals are often unscrupulous and misleading about how hard it is to care for these animals.

Lies to watch out for:

1. They get along with other animals. Lie.
Dogs and cats eat them and they are themselves omnivores
2. They only smell if you feed them animal protein. Lie.
They smell if you don't neuter them and fail to clean their cage and toys
3. They can live on store-bouoght pellets and apples. Lie.
They die on low-protein pellets. They need a carefully prepared diet.

As a follow up, my sister got a hedgehog. Which was touted as the perfect pet, very expensive, and utterly adorable. Well, they are from New Zealand and supposed to stay in warm climates. We were told its okay that the heat would be okay inside. Well he died the first christmas. Not to be a downer, just something to ask about since these are also warm environment animals.

We bought one. He is a male that is already neutered. My DH is Vet assistant and loves animals. We named him Ralphie. He is adorable. But it does take alot of time to train them. The ones at the mall are trained. When you get your baby he is only 8 weeks old and is scared. It takes alot of patience in the begining. He yells at you ans will nip at ya, but it dosent even hurt. I cant wait until he is fully trained. I will post pics of Ralphie when I can!!
