It is said they live to 15 years...but he doesnt believe it. Anyway, i am obsessed and wanted to share the info!!!!!

if you want to get info, ive been researching it all day so we might get one. Go to www.glideruniversity.org or www.sugarglider.com

we even found an informational video on you-tube!! we are at least doing our research! i contacted a vet today to make sure they are legal and that they can be cared for by a vet if needed.

About the whole peeing everywhere, if trained correctly, you can train them when to go to the bathroom on command. They also dont need to be on your neck, they can just sit in your pocket as they like to feel close to your body heat.

Another bit to consider (as you can tell, i'm extremely dismayed that this has come to NY and sad that anyone would fall for lies from exotic animal dealers):

Sugar Gliders are small marsupials who's native distribution is on the east coast of Australia, Tazmania, and parts of Indonesia. Their scientific name is Petarus Breviceps, which means 'short headed rope dancer.' Gliders can live up to 15 years in captivity but their life span in the wild is rarely more than 4 years. These animals live off of the sap of Acaica and Eucapyptus trees in rain forests. They also eat insects, honey dew, and pollen.

Suggies as they are sometimes called are considered pests in their native countries because they often raid trash cans, gardens and flowering trees in human-filled areas. Driven from their native habitat from deforestation, sugar gliders can often make a nuisance out of themselves by wrecking landscaped trees and flowers.

As pets, gliders are not for everyone. Until tamed, they bite and exhibit wild behavior. They are exotic, cannot be housebroken, and can inflict pain when they over-groom you and scrape at your skin as if it were tree bark. They are friendly and curious, but take a lot of care and a special diet. The Epidemic There is an Epidemic of unwanted and abandoned gliders. Because they are exotic pets, it takes a special person and family to dedicate themselves to taking care of these animals. All too often they are purchased 'on impulse' at trade shows, flea markets, and pet stores. Breeders and sellers of these animals are often unscrupulous and misleading about how hard it is to care for these animals.

Lies to watch out for:

1. They get along with other animals. Lie.
Dogs and cats eat them and they are themselves omnivores
2. They only smell if you feed them animal protein. Lie.
They smell if you don't neuter them and fail to clean their cage and toys
3. They can live on store-bouoght pellets and apples. Lie.
They die on low-protein pellets. They need a carefully prepared diet.

I whole-heartedly agree with you - it really worries me that this perpetuates the sale of exotic animals that die and get torn from their mothers everyday in the wild...when did a cat and dog stop being good enough? Even getting animals from a mall store - those animals live in horrendous conditions that are bought and sold everyday from puppy and cat mills..I encourage you to visit your local animal shelter before doing this. There are so many animals in need of a good home.

I cam home and showed my FH their website and he said they were gross and freaky. He just didn't get it. I think you have to see them in person!

Haha, I kind of think they are gross and freaky too. They look so creepy to me, I don't know why. They kind of look like mini squirrels and I don't like squirrels!

I agree.. they look like squirrels and I am deathly afriad of squirrels!!

I think they're cute, but would never get one as a pet. I'm a cat girl through and through, although I forsee a Coton in my not so far off future I think it's a little weird and unsettling. I never liked the idea of ferrets or chinchillas or other animals that really shouldn't be domestic pets.

LADIES!!! Please be careful!
I had one back in HS..they need TONS of attention!! I worked PT then and went to school...but I got out early... and the poor thing was feeling neglected and would cry all night long. Please make sure that they are ALWAYS around someone or they will get depressed...and yes, can die. Also, they take a long time to get used to someone's scent, so it isn't recomended to have a bunch of people petting your sugar glider until it is 150% comfortable with you. I used to keep them in my pouch of my hoodie. I WISH I could have one...they are adorable...but they need ssoooo much attentino! Just wanted to give you all the heads up!!

I'm not sure what facts about this creature based on the informative web sites you listed makes it appealing? In order to have a happy life, they require companionship (they are colony animals and require at least one other of its kind), at least a 10ftx10ftx10ft cage (plus a flying room including fruit branches), and a highly specialized diet (50% of the diet consists of grasshoppers, crickets, mealworms and moths). They are supposed to live 15+ years...but when they are miserable in captivity, they will usually die by 4.

If anyone still feels the need to own one of these animals after truly knowing the facts, please look into rescue. There are so many out there that have been discarded. People who sell these animals at malls, flea markets, pet stores, etc. run a dark and shady business and will lie to you. These animals are ripped from their mothers before they are supposed to be removed. These sellers are on par with puppy mill owners.
