My point about hitting is it is something done in anger, now don't tell me when you hit your child your not angry with them because that is bull!!! I happen to think you should never hit a child out of anger it just shows a lack of control of the situation. This is IMHO, I know others disagree

This is what my mother said - she would count to 10 (or 20 ) and then we would get a swat on the butt. She never hit us with anything but her hand and my father never hit us at all.
I don't feel as though I was abused. I am not confused about whether or not hitting is right or wrong. I don't think my views of violence are distorted because my parents gave us an occational swat. I did not live in fear of my parents.
Every parent and situation is unique. I can't say how I would raise my child since I don't have one. I can tell you that watching one of my friends trying to reason with her then 3 year old son was a huge deterrent for me to have children and I think her kids run all over her. That's JMO and I would never presume to tell someone how to raise their child.

Just wanted to share my thoughts.
Much has been said about 'tough love' for misbehaving children.
Most of America's populace thinks it very improper to spank children, so my spouse and I have tried other methods to control our kids when they have one of 'those moments'.
One that we found very effective is for me just to take the child for a car ride and talk.
They usually calm down and stop misbehaving after our little car ride together.
I've included the photo below of one of my sessions, with our son, in case you would like to use the technique.

I agree!! and if my children are as sweet as yours, then spanking isn't necesssary, but if it is, I will use it..
Or if you call the police, make sure you leave with them when they are leaving
Child abuse was big and up and coming when I was growing up.. I threatened to call child abuse one time and my mom told me to dial 9-1-1 instead, b/c she was going to killme! lol
MArcella my mom used to say the same thing, I was more afraid to get my arse kicked then so I gave up

I'm sorry, but some kids need to get spanked!!! I was spanked when I was a child and it deter me from misbaving often. I always did well in school because I knew that if I didn't, I would get a little more than just being sent to my room. My parents never spanked or yelled at me in public. All they had to do was give me a 'look' and I knew that I better sit my little butt down because I knew what was coming when we got home. I agree with everyone that there should be a line made between abuse and discipline. I hate parents who constantly yell or hit their kids. I mean there are parents who yell and curse at their kids just because they drop something. My parents never did that!!! I would spank my child if they talked back or cursed at me or were really, really acting up or if they were being disrespectful. I know someone posted earlier about instilling fear. I have to say that I never feared them up to the point that I couldn't talk to them. They were very reasonable people but I do think, however, that kids should have SOME fear towards parents. If not, they will try to walk all over you and I have seen this happen.

I have to agree with Shamma, everyone should raise their child as they see fit. A spanking on the tush is far from abuse.

I can say that I do not think spanking is necessary, but then again, I do not have children, let alone a child who can get out of control. But as a person who works with difficult children on a daily basis, I do not have the right to spank them, so I am forced to find alternatives ways to deal with their behaviors all of the time. I only hope that when I become a mother, I will be able to find alternative methods, as well. (of course LIW's method is first on the 'alternatives' list )
