Can someone tell me how a parent is supposed to deal with a child who has cut school (lets say they are 13 years).
They get caught...
You tell them ...go vacuum the house?
And when they tell their mothers
F*$# YOU B**%#?
Do you tell them to do the dishes?
And then they leave the house....since they won't go to time out?

What do you do then...Because this is what some of these teenagers are like now.

I can't believe the nastiness, disrespectful kids that are out there these days..And they aren't from 'bad' families either.. They are in the 'good school districts'...
A friend of mine is a custodian for a very good school district... And let me tell ya..there are 13 year old who smoke pot, give blow jobs in bathrooms and smear s*%# on walls...
Kids are just not the same when i grew up and a health dose of fear...is definately ok in my book! Because God help them if i ever got called up to a school to hear my kid smeared s*$# on bathroom walls..

This post scared me alot.. and I don't think kids today understand all the implications and consequences of the stuff they do. Kids see a lot on MTV (not blaming just MTV -- there is a lot of blame to go around), but the stuff that kids are exposed to today is incredible.

For example, when I was 13 -- I had to beg my Mom to let me watch a Cheech and CHong movie with my friends. She was totally in my business.. and I thank her for that. Years later I had my teenage rebellion years but it was when I was at least 17 and up.

I remember paying with Star War toys at 13. Getting a blowjob in the bathroom was not even on my top 10000 things to do list. Playing with my Star War toys and Matchbox cars was my lilfe. It was so much more simple then. Sure, things were corny by today's standards but at least kids had the chance to be kids.. not this world of kids trying to be adults..

So sad.

have you seen that public service announcement commercial with the mom & the teenager? its all about being in your child's business- knowing where they are, who they are with, checking up on them all the time. the teenager hates his parents for it, but it works. i love that commercial.

as a teacher of teenagers, i see the kids make so many bad decisions & deal with very few consequences, because the parents are not involved enough. they think that because their kids are smart, are in all the good classes & hang out with all the right kids, that they are just going to the movies on the weekends. but even the smart kids do some terrible things. when parents are uninvolved, too often the kids don't learn right from wrong, and they continue to go down a horrible road. most of them turn out great as adults, its amazing, but their teenage years are quite troublesome. while i hope i could trust my teenager to make the right decisions, i am no fool. i will be in their business constantly. let them hate me. they'll thank me for it later.

these are the kids you I think you REALLY gotta keep an eye on. They're the ones who kinda fly beneath the radar of bad behaviour. Even if it is not clearly apparent, that doesn't mean that it's not going on.

I worked with kids from 94- 98 and they do think they know more than you!

It's best to be in their business. They will rebel like crazy.. but in the end.. it's worth it.

All the time i hear about these kids ...Not HS'ers, little kids doing the nastiest things i have ever heard. Police get called up to schools all the time becuase of drugs, alcohol, hate crimes...

Unless you are a teacher in these schools, which i am not, you have no idea about these kids.

I think it is soo sad how much things have changed since i was in school..To me the innocence is so far gone..

Anyway, i know some people don't like the spanking thing. But if it just might keep my kid from being one of these brats well so be it. It worked for me and my FH. And we came out just fine.

have things really changed? i went to one of the top ranked schools in the state 15 years ago and there were 2 students that had sex in a porta-potty on the fields...

1. never in 1 million years would you have gotten me to then OR now to do this...

2. there are and were always the more rebellious kids..look at Rebel without a cause

a student punched out a teacher my senior year...I think there were and always will be bad apples...not that I am condoning this behavior at all...but I don't think these are new behaviors...

Excellent point. There are 'bad' kids everywhere, just as there are 'good' kids everywhere, and the behaviors we see today took place even when we were kids.

Being a teacher of small children I get to witness a lot of different styles of parenting, and I have learned a ton of 'must do's' and 'never do's' that I'm hoping will help me as a parent.

One thing I HAVE learned is that a SMALL degree of fear is what helps keep some kids in check. My students don't fear me per se, but many of them fear upsetting me or letting me down.

I don't doubt for a moment that craz stuff didn't happen when we were kids -- HS and college. But today there is such an upfrontness and openness about it that makes it scary. But I do think that the world today does try to push the envenlope that vene a few years ago.

For example (take this one for what's worth).. watching my fav program as a kid was WWF wrestling. And I loved it. Now we all know it's fake, but then it was corny... Now today it's still corny.. very much so. But I remember seeing an episode about a year ago and it was nothing like when I was a kid.

There were guys yelling out, '$uck it.' Women with huge implants and thongs parading themselves around. (And why don't I watch the show NOW? LOL)

I think this behaviour always existed. It's just so more open and out there and brash. Where we discussed things around hushed whispers, today it's all out there, whether we like it or not. That's my theory.

Yes, I believe that every once in a while it is ok to hit your kids. Sometimes talking is not enough because they don't listen to the talk sometimes..

Children are products of their environment. If they are loved and paid attention to at home, not just blown off like the family hamster, then they have a much better chance of not winding up like the 13 year olds that are getting into drugs, alcohol, etc.

Its completly up to the parents to raise respectful, law abiding children. It is not the schools fault or TV's fault. Its the parents. Its the parents that don't care that their kids are out running wild at 12 at midnight and the parents that dont keep on their kids about schoolwork who need to step back and realize exactly what they are doing to their childrens futures and the future of the US.

Now, I was not hit as a child. My mother and father both agreed that spanking was not what I should be taught. Yes, I know some think back to their childhood and say I was hit and I turned out fine and I will spank my kids... if you werent hit as a child would you still feel this way or would you believe there were alternatives to teaching hitting when someone does wrong?

I know abusing hitting and spanking are two different things but its still striking another.

Side note: Please don't take offense to this just thinking outwardly... were the majority of people who abused their wives/husbands hit as children?

I would like to think that when I have children I wouldn't want to him them but sometimes a smack on the butt is what's needed. I'm not saying ever to HURT a child but I think in some cases it's needed. Growing up, my parents would hut is on the butt if we talked back to them or would say a curse and we lived to talk about it!

Although I think that applies to older children. I don't think babies, esp 1 and 2 year olds need to be hit. I think the tone of your voice when you're angry should be enough to make them stop what they're doing.

Yes kids are a products of their environments and i do believe that a parents involvement in their kids life is necessary. But let's face it..Kids DO emulate what they see on tv and are greatly effected by thier friends. We just hope as parents and parents to be that what we have instilled in them since birth guides them in making better decision in their life. But even with the best of kids, they will do stupid crap and they must learn from it. And yes i was spanked as a child and an adolescent. And let me tell ya, it definately made me think twice about doing crazy things. Will it work all of the time ...no. Nothing works all of the time.
Side note...I would believe that the majority of people who abuse their wives/husbands were ABUSED as children not mearly spanked!
