so while members of our BP offered us a small apartment in their house to live in after the wedding. they are now asking that we pay a certain amount--and well i have no problem paying my way.....BUT the apartment is smaller than a freaking efficiency...and they are asking for like $900!!! that is OUTRAGEOUS! the place is barely 400 sq ft. (and i'm being generous)
so now FH and i have to start apt. hunting. and i'm just hating this so much. ugh...i hate this process!!

Re: SWR: Apartment hunting suuuuucks!
It's the worst. Check out Craigslist and Newsday. I have also heard that the Long Island Catholic has great ads for affordable apartments.

Re: SWR: Apartment hunting suuuuucks!
I would also check local college campuses, some people will be graduating this month, and they may have apartments available.
How much are you looking to spend? There is an apartment open in my complex, one bedroom, but its 1425 per month plus elec and cable

I can't offer any help but I can sympathize. I went through the apartment hunting this past summer and it was the worst. Good luck!!!

Re: SWR: Apartment hunting suuuuucks!
I know its a long process. Thats why when I hear people say oh i wanna start looking like 4 months before we want to move in i tell them theyre crazy, if you're renting its different but with buying it takes 3 months just for the closing, and another few months to find a place. Just gotta search ALOT, be patient and see as many places as you can. Maybe you can go to a real estate agent

Re: SWR: Apartment hunting suuuuucks!
I think she's talking about renting, not buying... so there wouldn't be a closing. And most apartments aren't even listed more than 30-60 days before they are available.

Re: SWR: Apartment hunting suuuuucks!
We had a really hard time finding a place too. I used Craigslist and eventually we found ours in the Pennysaver. It's a 1.5 bedroom for $950 plus gas and electric.

Re: SWR: Apartment hunting suuuuucks!
this is why i love this site.
Okay here's the deal...my FH and i are hoping to spend no more than $1200 for an apartment. (if utilitiets are included that's even better). we'd prefer a 1 bdrm...and love a 2 bdrm., but will consider a studio if we can't find anything.
As for areas--we both live in Western Suffolk now---the furthest out east I think we'd consider is like the Ronkonkoma area (nothing past Exit 59 off the LIE--my FH has to commute to queens 5 days a week!) and we'd like to try and stay in eastern to mid nassau.
so any towns in that area would be great...examples: Bay Shore, Islip, West & East Islip, Farmingdale, Melville, Deer Park, Dix Hills, Bohemia, Commack, Huntington, Lake Grove, Ronkonkoma, St. James, Lindenhurst, Babylon, Bellmore, Merrick ,Massapequa, etc. (i don't know the names of most nassau towns of the top of my head!) we're not limited to these, but they are the ones i know of!
And we do have a small cat and hope that someone will allow us to bring him. so if you have any thoughts or leads, feel free to FM me!
THANKS!

I don't know if this is too far out for you but my friend and her BF live in the Spruce Pond complex off Sunrise in Holbrook - they have a really nice 1 BR, with a kitchen and big LR... I think they pay around $1200 but plus utilities. They also have 3 cats (that the landlord doesn't know about - wink, wink)... But cats ARE allowed, they just cost extra per month.

Re: SWR: Apartment hunting suuuuucks!
I just went thruogh this.. HOnestly craigslist is good. but what I Found the real estate agents are always going to have the better apts. I know you have to pay a finders fee.. I was able to negotiate the finders fee to half.. You can do this.. or just look by owner only.. sometimes the owner only apts. are acutally more money.. so you have to be careful.. and don't let those real estate agents pressure you..

Re: SWR: Apartment hunting suuuuucks!
I don't know about the prices but there is a new complex on the corner of Vets Hwy and Broadway Ave in Holbrook. It is a senior citizen / multi res mix. SO your neighbors might be old but at least they will be quiet . As soon as they get the sewage treatment plant up and running they will begin renting. It was supposed to be up in September but there was a booboo with the construction. Like I said I don't know prices but the blue prints showed nice units.

Hi Mel... what's up girl? the LI catholic is where i found we found our apt. it's a basement apartment and we're only paying $850 and it includes ALL utilities and cable and we have our own washer/dryer and dishwasher. they have good deals in there. most 1 bedrooms or basements are well under a thousand.
