swr: bikini wax

Original post by weddingbunny

so, I've been considering having a bikini wax done for the wedding (as I'm sure many of us do).

I've never had one done before though - the only thing I've waxed is my eyebrows.

I have REALLY sensitive skin, so as you can imagine, the thought makes me a bit nervous.

so, I made an experimental appointment for next weekend to try it out... but I have no idea how to prepare for this to make it as non-traumatic as possible.

right now, I'm... ahem... totally natural down there. Should I trim beforehand or leave as is and let them trim it? Also, I've heard things like take a painkiller beforehand to keep the swelling down... does this really work? what kind works best? how far in advance should I take it?

is this going to be the most awkward experience of my life, as I fear it will be?

any other tips and tricks or words of advice (or just words to sooth my fears!) - anything you wish you'd known before your first bikini wax? anything at all?

thanks!

just don't trim the hair too short. If it's too short, the wax strip won't be able to grab it. It's definitely smart of you to go for a trial first to find out what kind of reaction your skin will have. Personally, my skin used to get really irritated and bruised. Needless to say, I don't wax anymore. I once had my arms waxed and it looked like I had been beaten because of all my bruises! But it might have been because the lady doing it didn't know what she was doing. Definitely make sure you go to someone reputable and spend the extra money to get someone who knows what they are doing! Good luck!

I read an ariticle about tips before you wax and they recommended a numbing spray although I can't remember the name off the top of my head. They also said to put talc or baby powder on so that the wax only sticks to your hair on not your sweaty skin and that 3/4 inch of hair is a good length for a wax.

I just started getting moderated brazillians done, and it hurts but its over really quick and so worth it. I bruise easily too, I will have a bruise on my pubic bone for like a day or two, The girl I go to, her name is martha in east islip and shes amazing and soooo funny, she had me laughing my AZZ off the entire time, she made me feel so comfy!!, fm for more info if you want.

I called and cancelled my first FIVE appointments cus I was too chicken but I finally just did it!!! And its great!

Someone recomended a lady named Martha to me, I wonder if it is the smae lady? (I haven't tried it yet, but I want to). I'm more worried about being exposed than the pain...

Where do you girls go to get this done?

And how does the entire process work? Like do you sit there like you do at the gyno and have someone work on you like that? Do you leave your underwear on? I really want to get this done but I want to know what to expect before I go.

i've had a brazilian 3 times and each time was by a different person. they all had me take my bottoms off. the table is like a regular dr's table- NO STIRRUPS like at the gyno . they have u bend ur legs so they can into hard to reach spots. like u have the soles of ur feet together, or pull ur knee toward ur head. its really not bad they are very professional and make u feel very comfortable. the trick is to not tense up when they pull the wax off. just keep breathing and talking and it will hurt less

I talked to the woman who waxes me and she says it really does vary person to person. Since I have been going I have really no pain except when she actually doing the waxing in certain areas. Just try to relax. As long as you go to a professional it will be done in a few minutes and you will not have to do anything to the area for a good 3-4 weeks. Beats shaving every day.

You should trim-- but not too much--- If you trim it too short than it will take her a zillion tries to get it out! and sometimes it is too short for them to wax it (I've made this mistake before and it made it soooo much more painful)

I would take something like Advil before and make sure you aren't PMSing...this always make you more sensitive down there too.

It is awkward-- but just think that they do this for a living & they have become desensitized to it.

OK, so how long do I have to go without shaving before hand? I am thinking of doing it too, but being the summer, I'll have to shave at least the area that sticks out of a bikini...any suggestions from the pros?

I'm naive to this, sorry, but how about when the hair grows back in? Does it itch down there? I had a bad experience with itchiness when I tried shaving once.

I had the same problem with itchyness when I shaved, but with waxing I don't get that.

Yep I had a brazillian and OH BOY! You feel like a naughty star because they amke you get into the most god-awful provocative positions so you're all 'goodies for sale' and then they nearly tear off your tender parts. It's like a B rated movie gone sadistic.

If FH is lookin for some lovin that night, poor man better prepared for 'DON'T YOU TOCUH ME!' It hurts, especially if you have sensitive skin. Outer areas don't hurt so much but closer to ahem...inner regions, be prepared to become vampiric as you reintroduce your teeth to your lower lip.

But the smoothness lasts a long time and no bumps so it's worth it. I would say it lasted for me about 1 month? Maybe a month and a half but by then it was starting back in. It is MUCH cheaper than lazer hair removal (Which hurts like a MOFO!!!!!)and I find for women of color, it lasts a lot longer.

I've been doing brazilian since high school...i'm now 8 years out of high school!!! But I stopped in September b/c the pain was just unbearable....now I just do laser brazilian. I had three sessions and my hairs are 90% gone. I love it. i am the perfect candidate for laser though, i'm a ghost with reallyyy dark hair....I guess that's why I have such great results and the pain...no pain compared to waxing.

I tried doing it myself and bruised everything!!! It was disgusting!!!

I have been getting full Brazilians for almost 2 years now. I love them!!!! But my man loves them more!!!
SO I take alieve or Tylenol1- 2 hrs before. ometimes I go to a place in the city and when I get to the salon I have a small glass of wine while i wait (they have wine, tea, and water @ this salon for everyone. that's the best part because by the time I get on the table I am so mellow anyway. it is very painful though but i just relax, breath and think of how happy my guy will be.

I have always just shaved but after reading this I am really considering waxing, but since I have 'no hair' right now how long should I let it get before waxing

Re: swr: bikini wax

just a little bit is fine. shaving is supposed to bad for you, larger chance of ingrown hairs too. it ***** during the process, but in the end it makes me happier!
